Alden Short Reviews (%countItem)

Alden Short unlawfully retained my security deposit. They failed to respond to every phone call, email, and letter I sent, attempting to resolve the matter. I filed suit against them and won. Yet they continue to ignore me or respond to my demands for payment of the monies rightfully owed to me. Save yourself the hassle and do not rent from this poor excuse of a property management company. They should truly be ashamed of themselves for how they choose to conduct buisness amd the way they treat their Residents. I can promise that every negative review about Alden Short on this Revdex.com site, or any other site out there, is a 100% true and accurate account of how awful they are.

Company has refused to give me proof of purchase of property but gave me a lease but states I am purchasing. Refuses to help repair the home.
I've been in my home for more then ten years. I was told from day one that I am purchasing this property , however they refuse to give me proof so that I may seek help to repair the property. They have also refused to repair the property due to this purchase agreement. I had a lawyer look over my documents that were signed at the intial purchase when I gave them my down payment for the home and the lawyer stated this was a lease with an option to buy but never signed to actually purchase and it wasn't even legal document. The forms used were outlawed prior to my purchase . I've since been hospitalized due to the condition of the home. The roof has fell in and foundation has fell in causing extreme water damage and mold. I have been asking for the information to their main office for more then two years now, where they said I must go to get this proof of purchase and been given the run around. No one has the information for this Richardson office nor the phone number . They told me to google the information. I did , however there is only a P.O. Box address listed. I am disabled and live on a fixed income. There are programs that can help me repair this house if I am indeed purchasing . The negligence that this company has provided has now put my life at risk. I was told by my doctors that I can not go back to my home due to the mold. This home needs to be condemned. There is no way in *** it would pass a city inspection. If you could provide any assistance in finding the information for this Richardson office I'd be thankful.

Desired Outcome

Help with repair and or refund for falsely being lead on to believe I am buying this home.

Customer Response • Sep 24, 2019

Thanks for the response back I'm about to get evicted cause I refuse to pay the rent and I'm not supposed to live there with mold is what my doctor told me. So I have to stay with my son for the time being

This place is a scam, unprofessional and inconsiderate. I leased a duplex in 2015. Due to uncomfortable situations I moved out before the lease was up. Here we are 2019 and I am applying for an apartment and I get denied because they put 2 evictions on me for June and July of 2015. I was never served a court order nor went to court. I was never evicted. It was a broken lease at the most. Since I was trying to move in a hurry I went ahead and paid the amount off. Now that I have reapplied to the apartments that denied me because of the evictions they are starting they have no history of me renting any property from them. The are giving both me and the apartments I have reapplied to a hard time. How do you have 2 evictions on my credit but no history of me renting a property from your company? Do not waste your time with this place. Molly the manager is very rude. Christian doesn't seem to know what he is doing. The whole team is ridiculous. Why is it you take my money for an eviction I never should have received, but make it hard to send out a rental verification form?

Alden Short will not return emails, voice mails or messages since April 2019. they locked me off of their website now, no possible to contact them
in 16 months that I have been renting from them I always paid the rent on time, usually days before the 1st.

In April 2019 I informed them that I had a $957 emergency, and the MAY rent would be paid 1/2 on the 1st and 1/2 on the 17th. on the 1st of MAY the system would not take a partial payment, I tried to schedule the complete payment on 05/08/19 longer have access to the website they have locked me out.

Alden Short will not allow me to pay the rent, Alden Short will not return emails, messages or voice mails.

I do not know what to do.

I have read horrible reviews left by prior tenants of Alden Short, how badly the company treated them. I just had not experienced anything like that until now.

Desired Outcome

Please accept my payment for the MAY 2019 rent.

Trying to collect double rent, due to a repair caused by tree that they ignored my complaints about
I have lived in this house since 2010. A different company managed it and I had asked them to cut a huge branch on tree that was growing into eave of house. They never did and said owner didn't want to cut tree. Alden Short took over and again I pointed this out to repair people if and when they came out and was never addressed. Last year I had a leak in laundry room and they came out a couple of days after I turned in the work order to fix it. They finally cut the 10-12" around branch down. Nothing was ever billed to me so I assumed they finally listened to me about the damage it was causing. A few weeks ago I sent pictures of that same tree with a huge branch again getting close to house and the base/trunk is pushing into house, and also another tree that the trunk is pushing down the fence so I can't keep it closed good. Another picture was sent to show the hand rail had broken and I almost fell going down the stairs. The reply was the owner didn't want to cut the trees. I know in my original lease, (which I'm a month to month for several years now) it said tree trimming, mowing, etc was my responsibility. I did all that, but it's not my responsibility when the owner doesn't want to do the major cutting of a tree that was already grown into the house. This should have been addressed upon moving in and I don't feel I should have to pay hundreds of dollars to do what is his responsibility, especially since he knew it was a problem. They're trying to get $432 for that eave repair now after all this time. They don't know I go in once in a while to check my account since they do auto rent payments from my bank. There was never any extra charges on my acct. till this month. They took the charge from my 3-1 rent payment and are now trying to say my rent is late and are adding late fees. I know this is against the law. All withing a few days I find this out and the next day I have an eviction notice due to non-payment of rent. I have been a good tenant, paid on time and keep the house up. Even Ben *** has been in my house and said it was one of the cleanest he's ever seen. I don't know why all of a sudden they're being this way, but I'm not going to be bullied. Carissa said she talked to the owner and would be willing to split the repair cost. If that's the case he's acknowledging he should have don't it but wants to cut his cost. I told her I might be willing to do this to make it all go away but then they added legal fees on saying I would have to pay that and I'm not going to pay that. They as a business should have contacted me by phone, email or letter about the charge before jumping the gun and trying to kick me out. If I was a bad tenant I could see it, but I have been a dream tenant as they call us online. Someone that pays, keeps property up, etc. I just tried to go into the tenant portal to get the exact amount they say I owe and they've locked me out. Guess they don't want me to collect any evidence against them.

Desired Outcome

I would be willing to pay the $216 Carissa said even tho I don't feel I should and them drop all other charges. Put acct back in good standing as it was

We have no recieved our security deposit back after 6 months.
My wife and I moved out of their rental house in May 2018. We have contacted them numerous times regarding when we will recieve our security deposit back and keep getting told someone has left and they need signatures or when called back there is no manager on property or answers. This has continued like this for 6 months.

Desired Outcome

Return our security deposit. Since no list of damages was sent we assume the deposit should be returned in full as stated in the Texas property law.

After 45 days of waiting they refused to refund my security deposit. After informing 3x I should receive it in the mail.
Refused to refund my $1,100 security deposit. After lying 3 consecutive times that I should be receiving it in the mail. The leasing agent encouraged me that I had the right not to allow strangers in my home as they would not be accompanied by a leasing agent. After waiting for 45days and became upset that I still hadn't heard anything back. John Warren informed me they were refusing to give me my deposit, because I selected not to have the property viewed during my occupancy. I only chose that option because the leasing agent Jennifer encouraged me to and the company allows self-service viewings. They are a total RIP OF!

Desired Outcome

I want me security deposit refunded. I left the home in better condition than when I moved in and deserved a full refund.

They would not issue a final account statement and falsely charged me to keep my deposit. Not until I had made multiple un-returned calls, sent a certified letter and an email did they even bother to respond. Then they not only overcharge, but make up charges and won't even remove a math error on their part. They are betting it is too much of a hassle to sue, but they picked the wrong one this time. Taking my time, building my case, involving other former tenants and employees. My warning to anyone even thinking about leasing with Alden Short, don't walk, run away!

Told to pay off debt to be approved, paid it off then told that since it was recently paid they could not approve the application. I want a refund.
When I went in to apply for a house I explained to the leasing agent Michelle that I owed an apt complex $1,070 but that I was already making payments on it and even showed proof that I was paying. She showed my printed out proof to the manager and he stated that if the default came out on my credit that I would have to pay a double deposit. So she told me to fill out and application for my spouse and I. I did and paid $83. They asked for several things from us which we provided and when I finally was able to get a hold of the leasing agent she told me that the credit check had not came back yet. IO stated to her that I would love to rent a home but could not afford to pay a double deposit. The deposit was of $1,300 plus another $1,300 just to get approved. She said she would let me know when the check came back. She finally called me back the next day and said that I wasnt approved because of the property I owed. She told me to pay off the debt and call them back so I could be approved. I paid the debt off the same day and tried calling back that afternoon and left a msg, no answer back. Called the next day and left another message and no answer. So finally I emailed her to the address she was having us send her all the proof the were needing. She finally responded and told me that "unfortunately they couldnt approve my application because the debt was recently just paid off". Couldnt she have said that from the beginning before I paid off the debt I owed. Of course by paying the debt my credit score will increase, but why would they get mad that I preferred to pay the debt instead of there double deposit which equalled up to $2,600 plus on top of that $1,300 first months rent. I was just trying to save $300 and also fix my credit. The date application was done and the fee was made was 2/16/2018. I paid with my debit card with numbers ending in 5625.

Desired Outcome

I want a refund of $83 for the application fee

Failed to send Final Account Statement and Refund of Security Deposit within 30 days.
I turned in my keys on 12/8/17, and as of yet have not been sent a Final Account Statement, nor a refund of my security deposit. I will be seeking 3 x the deposit as permitted by Texas Tenant Law if they do not refund my full deposit immediately. I have called and left several messages over the past month with Kim, and have spoken to Brittany twice with a promise of a returned call that has never come. Brittany at first told me that she wasn't sure if she mailed my FAS yet, and would have to get back to me. Then today told me that she would have to go to her desk to look it up because she recalled sending it certified mail, and would call me right back, and didn't. I called twice more and was disconnected both times. I finally was able to leave her a message demanding a return phone call and/or an email of my FAS.

Desired Outcome

Refund of the full original deposit immediately! Or I will seek 3 x that amount as outlined by Texas Landlord Tenant law because deposit was not refunded, nor Final Account Statement sent within the 30 days allowed.

Alden Short Response • Jan 31, 2018

Mr *** and Revdex.com,

You gave notice to vacate on 12/14/2017 and moved out on 12/08/2017. You are liable for rent from 12/1/2017 to 12/014/2017. You never paid that rent. As you have pointed out Texas code 92.104 does state the liability of the landlord to provide an itemized deduction of the security deposit. If you did read the entire section through, you would find 92.104(c)(1) states there is no description or itemization of the security deposit is required if the tenant left owing rent. As you have stated in other emails you did not pay rent, your broke your lease and you are not entitled to your request. Your threats of harm to our company are extortion, as you have stated you will slander our company if we do not pay you what we want.

Customer Response • Feb 01, 2018

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Had they returned the multiple calls, or sent my FAS in a timely manner there would no need for complaints of any kind. The company failed to act in good faith by sending the FAS within 30 days, and in the 3 + weeks since has failed to supply it even after multiple requests. My lease ended 11/12/17, I gave a proper 30 day notice, and their own employee gave me the prorated rent up to 12/14/17 that would be taken out of the deposit, in writing on the day I turned in the keys. The remainder of the deposit is due. I have made no threats, and the accusation of extortion themselves are slanderous. I have kept records of everything including move in inspection, maintenance requests, move out condition, and all conversations both verbal and email responses. I do not wish for this to go any further than them being reasonable with my request. I will wait to receive the Final Account Statement, which was to be mailed within 30 days and was not, but the owner stated would be mailed out yesterday. Once received this complaint will either be updated or removed completely depending on what is contained.

I wish to re-open this complaint with the new information provided. Please advise on how I can do that, or do I need to open a new complaint?

Thank you,

Cant get anyone to call me regarding my deposit. No mail rec'd regarding former addy, no one will call back and tell me how much will be refunded
I've called and left over a dozen voice mails since last Thursday. Calling 3-4 times a day, unable to reach anyone regarding the security deposit on my former apartment. I'm about to hire a lawyer over a 950 dollar deposit that I'm unable to get any information on how much they will be retaining and how much they will be returning. It's been two months, this is beyond ridiculous, as an exit interview should have taken place the first week and I should have been told within 14 business days, but no mail has been received at my forwarding address and no information has ever shared with me. This is my last option before I hire representation.

Desired Outcome

I want to know how much of my deposit will be kept and how much will be returned to me. Simple. Seems to be a problem with this company...simple things. They don't even answer the phone!

Do not do business with these people! They are crooks and they will actually steal from you. They took my money to a rent a house when they knew full well that they didn't have the legal right to rent the property and then refused to give me a refund. They are flat out crooks.

Alden Short Response

As we explained to ***, we provide marketing services to other investors and operators. The owner of the property on Ann, which she applied for, took back possession of the property after we listed and started the marketing process and after Mrs. applied for the property. We felt for Mrs. due to the owner breaking contract with us, costing us money as well. We told her the best and fastest way to get her application fee refunded was to contest the charge and we would let that contest go through. We do not have ownership of the refund portion of the application module through our property management provider, PropertyWare. We also told her we no control or authority to force the owner to accept her application. We are not happy about this situation either, and encourage her to take action against the owner of the property, which can be found by looking up the address on dcad.org and seeing the owner. We would happily provide the new property management company information if that was shared to us.

I applied for a property with this company and have been completely ignored since. I feel scammed out of an app fee.
I saw a home listed on*** from this agency and I became interested in leasing it. After calling the number listed for the property I spoke with the central leasing office who advised me of the of the self-view options. After viewing the property I was ready to lease it. I put in my application the very next day and per the website and the central office I would receive a call back in 2 to 5 days. I called the local a few times throughout the week and was always routed to the central office who always sent directed me back to the local office. I left multiple voicemail's for John who I was told was over that property and never received a call back. The central office told me they were a little short staffed and I should try emailing john. They provided me with an email and I got an email back saying it was not deliverable and the server refused my email. I know my application was not processed because they never verified my employment, income or rental history. At the end of the week I checked*** and he listing was removed. I called and again was referred to the central office who told me the property was no longer available and that may have been because I applied. The very next day the property was listed again on***. At this point I'm just wanting my money back for the application that was never processed because I could never do business with such unprofessional people. It has now been 9 days since I applied, I decided I would give one more try at communicating with them before I escalated the issue. I called today and of course was sent to the central office. I explained my situation as always they referred me back to the local office, they suggested I choose the option that was for actual tenants so that I would get an answer, I find it disturbing that I would have to do that. I called and selected the options for tenants maintenance and finally reached a live person at the local office. I explained my situation, the lady that answered asked me my name, said she would check into it for me and then proceeded to put me on hold for 15 minutes. At this point I have had it. I have never dealt with such careless and inconsiderate people. All I wanted to do was rent a home which thought was lovely and perfect for me, I was fully prepared to complete the process and put my deposit down, yet here I am, I have still yet to talk to someone from the local office, even if to just say I wast approved. I feel this is shady business and I was schemed out of application fee and am demanding that I get it back and that people should know what they are dealing with when dealing with t his company.

Desired Outcome

I would like a refund for my application fee because it was never processed and there was not adequate communitcation.

About rent
I received a letter in the mail stating that I needed to vacate but the letter was addressed to another tenant with a different address. I contacted the office and was told that I needed to leave due to complaints that I was never notified about. When I went to the office I asked for police reports that he stated he had but was not provided anything. He then stated that he would let me know what to do moving forward and would call me on that following Monday. Never heard anything. Now as of 06/29/17 I have received a summon for eviction court over rent fees that I from the beginning contacted and tried to pay but was told to leave the premises. It is so frustrating because I have a child that is on the verge of being homeless due to the unjust way I have been handled by this office. I attempted to pay rent and even have emails of trying to confirm how I could and why the rent was more than it was supposed to be on June 1st and 2nd. This office has to be stopped. When calling you can't even get a response and emailing the one person John who doesn't respond is a joke. This is a serious matter because I was threatened to leave and not pay rent so that I could be evicted.

Desired Outcome

I would like for them to fix this bad mark on my credit as well as fix the amount owed because this is all happening because of them. I have been from day one trying to fix this and make sure I was not in this situation they have not cared once.

Air conditioner
I have lived at this address for a little over 1 year now. 3 months after moving in, my central air unit went out. Took the company 3-4 days to come fix it. We had to buy a window unit. They refused to reimburse us for it and refused to put us in a hotel since we had small children. Ac eventually got fixed, someone. Back in march 2017, we were informed they would be coming out to replace the ac ducts in the house after once again the ac unit Broke down on us. The vents barely blow air and the ac unit is CONSTANTLY running as well as the window unit due to how hot it gets in the house during the day from the lack of air blowing from the vents. I have filed complaints numerous times, made numerous phone calls and nothing is being done. 99% of the time NO ONE answers the phones in the office!

Desired Outcome

Either Replace the ducts in the house for the central air unit like promised months ago or start paying my electric bills every summer due to the air conditioner running non stop in the summer time.
