Alex and Sons' Painting and Carpentry

My husband and I used Alex's company for several jobs over 2015-2016. A large paint job, small paint job, and bathroom repair were completed without issue. The owner, Alex F[redacted], is a flake, not reliable, and a liar.
The problem was that Alex kept the key to the condo for the bathroom repair in October 2015, and has not returned it. At first he said it was at home, then it was in his car, then it was in the mail. We never received it and are now concerned about safety and have to change the locks.
The next issue was for the small paint job - he was supposed to touch up another part of the house - and completely forgot. His excuses for tardiness etc during this timeframe were that he had kidney stones, then gallbladder issues, then he had to do something for his son at school. After that issue, we let it go, we tried to hire him to paint our front door.
He no showed on the day he was supposed to paint the front door. Multiple follow ups via phone, text, and email were not returned.
I got our lawyer involved (because of the condo key) at this point in Spring 2016, and Alex claimed to be in a car accident and unable to return messages. My husband also followed up regarding the condo key, and Alex claimed he mailed it. I waited a month, followed up again after the key was not mailed and Alex finally responded and said he had changed his phone number.
All in all, our relationship with Alex started out good, and then slowly soured over time. Shame on my husband and I for trying to continue to hire him and give him business.
