Tell us why heTo Whom it May concern :Mr *** brought his boat into All Marine stating that it would not start, after inspecting the boat we discovered that his starter was bad. Mr*** approved the estimate to replace his starter, at which time we installed a new Sierra starter,
(purchased from our Sierra supplier). Soon after Mr*** brought his boat back claiming that the starter was acting up again, when his starter was removed there was evidence of rust on the gears, this would only occur if water was getting into the starter, which could be caused by leaving the boat out in the rain with a drain plug in place or by forgetting to tighten his drain plug while using the boat. In spite of the obvious water damage we honored the part warranty and sent the part back to our supplier, at which time they sent us a replacement. We then installed the replacement starter free of charge. This occurred additional times, and each time there was evidence of water damage but our supplier honored the warranty and sent the starters for us to install. Mr*** never purchase another starter, Nor was he charge to have the new starters installed. This last time Mr*** brought his boat in claiming that the starter went out on him while he was out on the water and wanted us to again replace it under warranty. When the starter was pulled we noticed that it had been beaten up pretty badly, so instead of sending it into our supplier we had a local company examine the starter to see if they could fix it. Attached is the finding of *** *** * ***. After inspecting the starter they came to the conclusion that the starter could not be fixed because someone took a hammer (or other blunt object) and banged on the starter and in doing so broke the magnets on the inside. Mr*** stated that he was out on the boat and it would not restart so he hit the starter several times to see if he could get it to work. Mr*** was told that the damaged that this caused has now voided the warranty. Our supplier will not replace the starter do to the damages caused by Mr***. Attached is the service order from *** *** *** *** stating that the magnets inside have been broken due to someone hammering on the starter. Also attached are two pictures of the starter one is the outside of the starter, where you can clearly see the marks on the starter from being hit and the second is a picture of the gears once again showing evidence of water damage.
