On/around 5/24/15, pilot went out on my older Coleman heater, I called around for help

and [redacted](a tech) at this firm was very helpful, came out and made sure gas was shut off.

We agreed he would return next day to diagnose the problem. On this day w/o any knowledge or inspection, he informed me he would have to 'red tag' heater if heater exchange cracked. This comment alarmed me, as it was not a reasonable inference at

the time it was made.([redacted] was here was about one minute).

[redacted] arrived promptly on 5/25/15 to diagnose heater problem(s). [redacted] is a nice guy, professional, courteous but works for a firm which needs to address its purpose and

stop ripping off [redacted] residents. [redacted] spent less than 5 minutes doing a water test

(heater leaked) and then photographed "a variety of cracks'" in the heater exchange.

With absolute certainty he informed me that cracks were dangerous, leaking CO and

heater needed to be replaced(at an absurd cost of $2795) and red-tagged(required by

law)

As agreed upon on 5/24/15, I paid [redacted] $79,00 but requested his firm replace heater

exchange as although difficult to obtain(part)...I have 4 months before I need the heater

and unknown to [redacted], had a newer auto-ignite gas heater which almost killed me when

I attended law school in [redacted](got CO poisoning and was sick like a dog for 6 mos).

The older Coleman I have used is virtually an industry standard in safe, depenpendable heater. Have had one major problem with it in 7 years which was repaired.(in 2010).........and after professional servicing(could not get in [redacted]) has worked great

until very 5/24/15.

I stress that I believe [redacted] is a fine tech but his firm is pushing him to sell heaters and not to repair, inspect, diagnose anything. He made several attempts to strong arm me into ordering a new heater which I did not appreciate or solicit. Having been victimized by

virtually every [redacted] heating and contractor - [redacted] as a tech was good and I felt properly trained and did reasonable testing but I am not a HVAC tech. However I was

adamant in requesting his company find and install another Coleman heat exchanger.

[redacted] raised a valid point that parts may not be available but had prior knowledge that

parts could be obtained or in a worse case scenario I would use refurbished parts from

a reputable company, if needed.

After leaving my place and I would guess calling his boss, he called me back in 2 minutes again trying to sell me a new heater. I did not appreciate call as I was very

explicit about my wants and needs to [redacted]... Though irated by this sales pitch I still

knew [redacted] was just an employee and that his boss ordered him to do this............I repeated by desire to have his firm find a new heat exchanger and install it when

it arrived(likely 2-3 months). [redacted] promised me that his boss would get back to me by

the end of the week and this was fine with me(as Summer is just starting).

My brother in Phoenix is a expert in heating and HVAC. He trained techs for [redacted] for

many years and has published around 5-10 instructional texts on heating and HVAC(sold on [redacted]). He also in 2010 personally worked on my heater and has repeatedly told me to hold onto this unit as with proper service - it is best in the field.

I called him in the evening and recanted the above and he was shocked by what transpired and informed me I was scammed and ripped off. He affirmed that cracks

in a heater exchange can be a very serious problem but that virtually all heaters 5 years

or older have 'cracks,' which are insignificant and harmless. Lastly when a tech sees

cracks, a water test is virtulally useless in ascertaining if heater exchanger is bad. Cracks should not be ignored but warrant further testing (e.g. IR exam of depth, CO

testing etc) to ascertain if heater exchange is dangerous.

[redacted] just photographed several cracks and concluded heater exchange bad which is not

standards for heating industry. He made no attempt to re-lit pilot, inspect other parts of

heater or perform a reasonable diagnosis for $79. At least ten or more factors or more could

have caused pilot to go out(including wind). His company, on its website is now advertising, a full heater tuneup for $79 and all I got was about 5 min. of labor and sales

pitch to buy a new unit(for $2795 - a price which is exorbitant for this area). This co.

must have a mark-up greater than any in the state.

The firm's websites boosts 'quality management', up to date trained techs and service,

and state of art diagnostics which is colorable if not fraudulent based on my experience. After talking to expert brother on point, I searched the Net and found

that [redacted] contractors during the winter of 2014, were pulling this same

stunt in reference to cracks and were disciplined by appropriate agencies in [redacted] for

their nonsense.

I really need a heating/cooling contractor who REPAIRS and fixes and not is out to sell

me a new unit. Before leaving, [redacted] when queried informed me that they also do not

work at all on A/C but just toss them and replace with new units. I realize that a company has right to take on jobs or not but is violating the law if diagnosis of customers' unit is based on inferences and not industry approved standards.

In summary, this company based on my experience is marketing new products rather

than repairing units. They are employing deceptive methodologies to entice customers

to dump their heaters. It is plausible heat exchanger bad but 5 min. of testing and photos of cracks do not support this and for amount I paid, [redacted] w/o getting the heater

running could not evaluate if cracks were serious or superficial, w/o further testing.

I will add that after [redacted]'s cursory inspection,he gave me the option of not having to pay him $79. But I had agreed to do so the day before, appreciated [redacted]'s coming out

twice(on 5/24 to make sure gas was OFF) and trusted that [redacted] was correct about

heater. Also as cited before I desperately need a honest and reputable contractor so

I agreed to pay the $79. Times are tough for everyone and I felt [redacted] performed well. So

to maintain good will with his company, I paid for a 5 min. mickey mouse diagnosis.

Last night I emailed the company, a synopsis of the above, and told them not to contact me again. Although [redacted] I believe is like a good tech, he is controlled by a company which is in my opinion, a rip-off and has opted to sell new units rather than repair. IF they wish to pursue this, they need to update their website and inform consumers of

their new business objectives and send out sales personnel rather than techs.

I believe a full refund of my $79 is warranted, as no one earns $79 for a diagnosis made in minutes and w/o proper testing. Also I ask the Revdex.com to look into this company,

as except for expert brother, I was totally conned and am a sophicated consumer - I

was a chemist before going to graduate school and have a Ph.d in sciences and have

lot of knowledge of safely maintaining dangerous equipment and instruments using

gas. My only excuse was I was sick when this happened and although I pretty sure

I had properly shut down heater, felt second opinion warranted.

This company now has an "A+" rating, which makes me wonder about the Revdex.com. In this

economy, as this company does not repair but sells new units ONLY...they are leaving

[redacted] folks with unserviced units possibly dangerous units as most folks cannot afford to replace major appliances.

I will get the heater fixed but am now refusing to use any [redacted] contractor and will if

warranted get reputable firms from [redacted] or LV. Luckily my heater problem started

in warm weather, if it was winter, this firm would have totally taken me to the proverbial

cleaner's and would have been forced to buy a new heater.

Have dealt with at least 4 other companies in [redacted], who are worse than this one..

but am not totally disgusted by [redacted] contractors period. Have live literally in my life

from Coast to Coast, border to border and occassionally had ran into bad companies.

Since 2008, I strongly believe all [redacted] Heating/cooling companies should be shut

down by State or appropriate agencies.

As long as colorable contractors are able to con [redacted] residents, they will stay in

business and prevent reputable companies from opening shops here.

PLEASE INVESTIGATE.
