Review: We signed a contract with Alleva in June, detailing the repair work and reconstruction of front steps. In said contract we agreed that if upon beginning of project it turned out that the project was more involved we would discuss the additional work at the time the issue was brought up. Total of this contract was over $5,000. Alleva started work on the stairs early this week, and it turned out that more work was in fact necessary. The representative of Alleva approached me with paperwork when I returned from dialysis- in no state to understand the document I was being presented. I am 85, on dialysis and on oxygen in the home. In this state of mind I signed what turned out to be an additional contract, for another $3,000. We agree that additional costs are warranted since the stairs turned out to be in worse shape than originally thought. However, the original contract spells out the repair of stairs (3 stairs only!!!) for the $5000+ and yet, for some reason, the new contract for an additional $3000+ ALSO includes the cost of repairing these very stairs. The ONLY thing the company needs to do beyond the scope of the original contract is poor a foundation and use a little more material for these three stairs! We are talking about 2 or so bags of concrete mix, and a few extra bricks and maybe 4-5 hours of labor for two men. How can an ADDITIONAL $3000+ be warranted for THIS?Alleva's profit margin on this project is astronomical. Additionally, the company representative asked for a second down payment (up front payment) on the new contract! At the end of the day, we do not want to be double charged for this project. We agreed to extra work, and to paying for the extra work. However, as repair to stairs was already written into the original contract, it does not make sense for the second contract to cite "repair to stairs" at such an high cost ... out "repair to stairs" and for theDesired Settlement: We ask for a fair reassessment of the entire project without double charging for the originally agreed upon work written into the original contract.
