If Allways Plumbing’s response to our letter had been as polite, professional, and reasonable as their reply to you, there would have been no reason to pursue the matter. We had offered to pay them an agreed amount and sent a check for $100 as a good faith down payment. Their letter to you glossed over several facts.
Their worker disconnected our water system and left us without water. He could have made the temporary hookup performed by the plumber we subsequently called. Provable fact.
The phone caller vehemently declared that there would be no bargaining; he wanted the full amount. (His word, my word).
My suggestion was quick and easy and when carried out as I asked, resolved the problem safely and with little effort. Although they deemed my plan impractical, it worked—proof of the pudding! Provable fact.
The other organization I contacted was Labor and Industries. A representative spoke to us and told us that the contractor was non-compliant with several regulations and he would have a discussion with them to help settle the problem. He called us back and told us that rather than pay over $1500 in fines, they would accept our offer of $500. Provable fact and the most likely cause for their sudden reasonableness!
We see no reason to have any further contact with these people: we do not plan to deliver the checks in person and hope not to receive any more phone calls from them! We will send a check for $100 in Sept., Oct., Nov., and Dec. which will pay in full the amount agreed upon. We consider the matter settled. This letter is merely to straighten their “slant” on the matter!
Sincerely,[redacted]

Dear Better Bussiness Bureau,Thank you for giving us the chance to respond to the complaint you received. As your letter pointed out, there are two sides to every dispute, and in this case the two interpretations of the situation are very different. As such, we welcome the chance to explain our side...

of the story to further the advancement of marketplace trust, specifically in this community. A little background information about the job and Allways Plumbing's onsite interactions with the customer is necessary to understand the circumstances surrounding the event that lead to this complaint.Upon arriving at the job site, the complainant told us that, many years before,  he had worked as a plumber, then he told us how he thought we could fix his problem. Despite being unable to verify the complainant’s experience as a plumber, we took his input very seriously when we making our evaluation of the best way to fix his problem. However, our experienced plumbers noted a few unrealistic steps in the customer’s plan and decided that an alternative course of action would be the best and safest way to fix the problem. This decision was communicated to and agreed to by the customer, but was the initial source of friction as he wrongfully interpreted our choice not to follow his plan as lack of respect for his experience.  As for the complaint, one thing the customer took issue with was the number of people Allways Plumbing had on the job site: He claimed “ The hook up could have been done by one person, not two and in one hour, not two each!” While one person may have been able to complete the job, albeit in much more than an hour, Allways Plumbing decided to send another plumber and an apprentice to help after the initial plumber seriously injured his hand on the job which led to him going to the emergency room and not returning to work until the next day. As for the other component of the complaint, after receiving his bill, the customer called Allways Plumbing to express his dissatisfaction with the amount of the bill. Then, he proposed a settlement of $500 which, hoping to avoid confrontation and future issues obtaining payment, we accepted with one condition. That condition was that in the future, the customer would choose to use a different plumbing business. Upon hearing the condition, the customer became verbally aggressive towards Allways Plumbing and its employees. Considering this complaint, it is clear that the customer misinterpreted our tone of frustration (with his lack of respect for our experience as plumbers, unwillingness to pay a fair bill, and propensity for calling Allways Plumbing and its employees vulgar names and slurs) as a tone of violence. At no point in our conversation was any violence threatened or implied and any claims that suggest such are objectively false. Having operated as an honest and professional business for over 25 years, Allways Plumbing knows that violence or threats of such is never an acceptable course of action and would never resort to such unprofessional behavior over a mere $201.14, nor over any amount. At this point, Allways Plumbing is still more than willing to settle the bill for the suggested amount of $500, but as the complainant’s misinterpretations of tone during phone conversations have lead to false and unfounded complaints at multiple organization, we wish for no further contact with him. Thank you again for contacting us and being willing to listen to our side of the story. Best regards,Allways Plumbing
