From: [email protected]: [email protected]: responseDate: Fri, Jul 18:23:-0600ID # [redacted] In response to the complaint of the id number above. The husband brought the dog in on Saturday 1/24/10:am for a laceration on the Right paw All that follows is from the documented medical record. After talking to the husband and examining the dog I was very concerned that MORE was going on than just a laceration [redacted] had a fever, come to find out he had not eaten since Thursday and he was extremely painful in the Left upper leg region The laceration was not anywhere near where the pain was The laceration was also an old insignificant wound He was having some diarrhea and had vomited twice that morning According to the owner he hurt himself a lot The fact that he was not eating worried me because he could not handle oral antibiotics, which the owner had requested I felt more testing was necessary to find out what was going on The husband then called the wife to discuss the issues I spoke to her on his phone and told her of my findings I told her it was more than a simple laceration I told her that the extreme pain he had on his upper leg could be, bone pain even bone cancer that needed an x-ray She declined the x-ray saying "she knew it was just soft tissue pain from the injury" They did not want to take my medical advise and they knew their dog Medical advice comes from many years of experience and knowing how pets respond to different situations Yet, she knew better than me and thought I was wrong so as a result I can only do what a client allows me to do on their pet So the husband and I formulated a plan to treat his symptoms We had a couple hours until we closed for the weekend We could keep [redacted] and try a bland diet to see if he would be able to hold down antibiotics and if so he would go home If not he would need more intense treatment such as iv catheter and fluids to help him feel better, treat his dehydration and see if we could get his fever down enough to get back to eating Then he could go home on oral antibiotics I explained to the husband that we ARE NOT A HOUR FACILITY, we are NOT staffed through the weekend and we would just be checking on him but NOT staying with him So if he needed fluids he had the option of staying here and just being checked on vs going to Denver to a hour facility(they tend to be more expensive) There are no hour facilities up here He was fine with that plan.We tried a liquid bland diet but minutes later he vomited it up I called the owner to state there was not much hope for oral antibiotics I again verified that they did not believe he had gotten into anything I also checked to see if there were any other parts to the history that would help us figure this out The answer was NO We talked about iv catheter & fluids to flush out his system, treat dehydration and see if we could get the fever down and do the antibiotics as an injection We discussed the estimate and the option to go to Denver, and I reminded him we do not stay here on the weekends He stated that he had budget concerns so that staying here was his only option if [redacted] was not going to hold anything down The plan was to do hours on fluids and reevaluate to see if he would eat The husband knew that fluids took time and only time would tell if he would improve If he did not improve further testing would have to be done So we placed an IV CATHETER and started [redacted] on fluids and did an antibiotic injection The owner in her complaint stated that he did not need a catheter if I was there to take him outside regularly That is a URINARY CATHETER, there is a huge difference He did NOT have a urinary catheter and I WAS there to take him outside regularly So she should check her facts before insulting people I went in to check on him and walk him on average every 3- hours He was so dehydrated that it took him a while to build up some urine and on many walks he produced nothing He was also getting antibiotic injections multiple times a day as well as pain injections. The next morning I called to fill them in I talked to the husband about 9:am I stated that the vomiting had stopped, he drank some but he still had no interest in food That was some possible improvement but that was not making me feel he was better I stated I was still very concerned about what was going on that was causing such pain He was having a really hard time getting up to go outside and again recommended an x-ray The owner declined We formulated a plan that he would continue fluids for the rest of the day Once you pay for an over night you are paid for the rest of the day He was fine with that since at that point it was not extra cost We would then reevaluate when I called them that night.I continued to check on him regularly through the day and would check for any messages when I came in There were no messages so we continued on with fluids and the plan to update the owner that evening After spending lunch time with [redacted] about 3:I went to grab a late lunch/dinner pizza with my family January in ski town the pizza took a little longer than but I was back at the clinic before 5: I was outside with [redacted] for a while trying to get him to urinate He was having a lot of trouble getting around I offered him some water and he drank but he still had no interest in food Then I found there had been messages from the owner 3:pm and 4:pm and the messages just asked when he was going home There was not concern, no panic, no comment on wanting to do any further work up I was just about to call the owner and my technician called me to say the owner is all upset, she called Frisco trying to find a way to reach me and is worried about if her dog is alive etc.So baffled, I called the owner to go over the update I was immediately attacked on the phone about how she expected a call every hours She had never asked to be called every hours and each time I called her husband answered and seemed fine with the plan we were following She said she did not know if her dog was alive or dead She said she had been trying to reach me all day As stated before I had been checking messages all day and there were NONE She went on ranting, raving, yelling and insulting me and I could not get a word in So yes, I raised my voice to say back to *** I tried to explain that I had been in & out all day checking on [redacted] and just went to grab dinner with my family which she said was unacceptable She wanted to pick [redacted] up So I told her that was fine. She arrived to pick him up with a very aggressive attitude I explained that I was still concerned that there was more going on She did not care to hear anything, she wanted a copy of my treatments sheet and wanted her dog She accused me of not coming in to check on her dog which I told her was not trueSo I made her copies and she paid and left.We were told later that she still did not do further work up and later euthanized [redacted] due to the pain. All her major complaints are completely false:I have NEVER claimed to be a day a week practice The sign on my door does not claim thatNone of my advertising has ever said I was a day a week practice so her statement claiming that is just not trueWe are not even open every Saturday Her dog WAS regularly cared for and I spoke regularly with her husband It is not my fault if he did not communicate the information that we discussed. Our phone message says to leave a message if we do not answer and we will get back to youUnless it is an emergency then call the clinic on call who for that weekend was Frisco Animal Hospital.I did not know she had been trying to reach me "all day" since she did not follow directions and leave a message. My husband was there because we had gone to get a meal and he drove me back Her husband was there too was that to intimidate me? A ridiculous commentI am extremely offended by her remarks I am a Veterinarian so I can take care of animals and I care for them all as if they were my own I have NEVER neglected a pet I was up in the night checking on her dog and providing service that no one else in this county would I gave her husband the option of going to Denver to a hour facility that would have cost about $ So instead of asking me what has been going on or leaving a message earlier in the day she decided that she HAD to talk to me immediately at 3:pm When I was not available she just got irate and insulting. As for her comments on other people saying I was hard to get in touch with I was not available for a while when we closed and moved our business to a different location But even during that time the message said, to leave a message and I would get back to you So I did house calls & delivered food and meds until we could reopen That is the only time I have not been easy to reach. As to the desired settlement: She did not loose her beloved pet due to anything I did I gave [redacted] comfort and medication to make him feel better, when there was OBVIOUSLY something more SERIOUS going on She was a know it all who did not want to follow my medical advise and now she blames me for whatever he had going on It was already going on when he first came in my door. Why she feels that I did not dedicate any time to her dog I will never know Being there every 3-hours, cleaning up when he vomited, slowly taking him outside since he was having such a hard time, offering him water, sitting with him to try to encourage him to eat, administering medications etc,etc etc Just because she was not there to see it and because I did not call every time I was with him is not reason to spread accusations When I talked to her husband that morning (9:am) the plan was to talk next at dinner time I am sorry if he did not communicate that with her If she was trying to reach me otherwise, simply following the directions on the voice mail to leave a message would have fixed that too.I am sorry she lost *** It is always hard to loose a pet He was a sweet dog I also know that part of the grieving process is to blame But it is not fair to say statements, slander or spread accusations I did a lot for *** I had limitations put on what I could do by the owners decline of medical testing and budget She got a lot more than what she actually paid for And again the comment on the catheter is just plain ignorance The whole reason he was there was to get IV fluid by IV CATHETER Without that he would not have been able to get the antibiotic injections or the fluids for his dehydration. The moral of the story is that if she wanted to talk to me about what all had been going on or come by to visit [redacted] while he was on fluids that would have been fine I do not have a crystal ball to know someone is trying to reach me When they call but don't bother to leave a message that makes communication near impossible This is all over communication Not any neglect to ***.And again I am sorry for her loss.Michelle G***Alpine Veterinary [email protected]
