Alterations by Janet Reviews (4)

Revdex.com: I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted] , and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below We were promised that the dress would be hemmed by Tuesday, but we were not called until Thursday It was then that we were told there was a problem Hemming the dress 1/inches too short was a careless mistake I do not feel she did what she needed to do in a timely manner in order to attempt to fix the problem She was aware that I needed the dress by Friday evening (because we had other appointments scheduled for Saturday and could not come in then), but by 1:PM on Friday she had not even begun to sew the dress It was not even with her at her place of business She never told me that she was taking the dress out of the shop and taking it home I did say I would come back and pick up the dress when it was finished When I asked her for the 2nd time if it would be finished by that evening, her response was, "I close at 5:PM.” The new lining pieces she cut were too small and additional alterations were needed to make the dress wearable Panels of fabric from the old lining had to be added to the new fabric lining The ladies who ended up fixing her mistakes took hours and [redacted] constantly trying on the dress at each step in order for it to fit properly They were surprised at the condition of the dress when they pulled it out of the bag(They have a combined 40+ years of sewing experience including making and altering bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, and prom dresses.) I am not sure what Janet meant when she said, “I left the dress as intact as possible.” All of the seams and the zipper had been removed The bodice was separated from the skirt which had also been separated into panels of fabric Intact means together and no parts of it were together Janet is incorrect when she says that “The overlay dress layer was hemmed fine with the exception of (one) 1/2" piece in the front that was hanging 1/4" longer“ The back of the overlay was about ½ inch from even touching the floor The front half of the dress was too long and was lying on the floor by about 2-inches The left side hem of the dress was not at the same length as the right side hem and neither side was the same length as the front or the back Due to the random hem lengths, the overall length of the dress had to be shortened to fit the shortest length of the hem Because of this, ***h could not wear the heels that matched the dress (These are the same heels she was wearing when we took the dress in for the initial fitting to see how much to hem it) She had to find flat sandals to wear and even then the hem of the dress was off of the floorI did call and leave a message for her to stop working on the dress I was not confident that she would be able to fix it correctly and in time (based on her actions over the previous hours) I felt I had to do everything I could to get this dress fixed and ready for my daughter to wear to prom the next day I did make an attempt to work with her on repairing the dress She did not appear to put forth the effort needed on her part She told me she hadn't started working on it because she "had other things to do." She said I just didn't understand I know that if we would have let her continue to sew the dress back together that when we showed up that evening to get the dress, it would not have fit ***h This is also the opinion of the ladies who fixed the dress Yes, the sash was hemmed properly The dress could have been worn even if the sash had not been hemmed We just thought it would be easier for her to dance if it were shortened But what good is that when the dress itself is unwearable? That is like telling someone whose clothes are falling apart that their socks look nice Janet also says she did “99% of the work on relining the dress.” I am not sure how her math adds up She gave me bag of pieces of fabric All she did was take apart the dress (I have a picture of the bag and pieces of fabric available if you want to see itI also have pictures of the dress that shows the panels that were added if you want to see them.) She did not apologize until the last time I was there to pick up the dress She had a very nonchalant attitude about the whole situation I think that should have been the first thing she did I did tell her that I could not recommend her business with a clear conscience to any of my friends I did tell her that I would not visit her shop again She did not say that she never wanted me in her shop again and that she would appreciate me never referring her to any of my friends (I have no doubt that she thought it or said it after I left.) If I appeared rude at any time it was purely my frustration with the entire situation On all of my visits to her shop, I had someone with me who can substantiate my complaint My daughter was with me on two of the visits, her friend was with us once, and my mom was with me once I can provide the names and number of the ladies who did the final alteration repairs as well as my daughter’s, her friend’s, and my mom’s numbers if needed I am requesting that my money be refunded to me From not getting the dress finished by the promised date and the mistakes made, I feel that she did not perform the services that she was paid to do Regards, [redacted]

Revdex.com:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
We were promised that the dress would be hemmed by Tuesday, but we were not called until Thursday.  It was then that we were told there was a problem.  Hemming the dress 4 1/2 inches too short was a careless mistake.  I do not feel she did what she needed to do in a timely manner in order to attempt to fix the problem.  She was aware that I needed the dress by Friday evening (because we had other appointments scheduled for Saturday and could not come in then), but by 1:00 PM on Friday she had not even begun to sew the dress.  It was not even with her at her place of business.  She never told me that she was taking the dress out of the shop and taking it home.  I did say I would come back and pick up the dress when it was finished.  When I asked her for the 2nd time if it would be finished by that evening, her response was, "I close at 5:00 PM.”  The new lining pieces she cut were too small and additional alterations were needed to make the dress wearable.  Panels of fabric from the old lining had to be added to the new fabric lining.  The ladies who ended up fixing her mistakes took 7 hours and [redacted] constantly trying on the dress at each step in order for it to fit properly.  They were surprised at the condition of the dress when they pulled it out of the bag. (They have a combined 40+ years of sewing experience including making and altering bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, and prom dresses.)  I am not sure what Janet meant when she said, “I left the dress as intact as possible.”  All of the seams and the zipper had been removed.  The bodice was separated from the skirt which had also been separated into panels of fabric.  Intact means together and no parts of it were together.  Janet is incorrect when she says that “The overlay dress layer was hemmed fine with the exception of 1 (one) 1 1/2" piece in the front that was hanging 1/4" longer. “ The back of the overlay was about ½ inch from even touching the floor.  The front half of the dress was too long and was lying on the floor by about 2-3 inches.  The left side hem of the dress was not at the same length as the right side hem and neither side was the same length as the front or the back.  Due to the random hem lengths, the overall length of the dress had to be shortened to fit the shortest length of the hem.  Because of this, [redacted]h could not wear the heels that matched the dress.  (These are the same heels she was wearing when we took the dress in for the initial fitting to see how much to hem it. )  She had to find flat sandals to wear and even then the hem of the dress was off of the floor. I did call and leave a message for her to stop working on the dress.  I was not confident that she would be able to fix it correctly and in time (based on her actions over the previous hours).  I felt I had to do everything I could to get this dress fixed and ready for my daughter to wear to prom the next day.  I did make an attempt to work with her on repairing the dress.  She did not appear to put forth the effort needed on her part.  She told me she hadn't started working on it because she "had other things to do."  She said I just didn't understand.  I know that if we would have let her continue to sew the dress back together that when we showed up that evening to get the dress, it would not have fit [redacted]h.  This is also the opinion of the ladies who fixed the dress.
Yes, the sash was hemmed properly.  The dress could have been worn even if the sash had not been hemmed.  We just thought it would be easier for her to dance if it were shortened.  But what good is that when the dress itself is unwearable?  That is like telling someone whose clothes are falling apart that their socks look nice.
Janet also says she did “99% of the work on relining the dress.”  I am not sure how her math adds up.  She gave me bag of pieces of fabric.  All she did was take apart the dress.  (I have a picture of the bag and pieces of fabric available if you want to see it. I also have pictures of the dress that shows the panels that were added if you want to see them.)
She did not apologize until the last time I was there to pick up the dress.   She had a very nonchalant attitude about the whole situation.  I think that should have been the first thing she did.
I did tell her that I could not recommend her business with a clear conscience to any of my friends.  I did tell her that I would not visit her shop again.  She did not say that she never wanted me in her shop again and that she would appreciate me never referring her to any of my friends.  (I have no doubt that she thought it or said it after I left.)
If I appeared rude at any time it was purely my frustration with the entire situation.  On all of my visits to her shop, I had someone with me who can substantiate my complaint.  My daughter was with me on two of the visits, her friend was with us once, and my mom was with me once.  I can provide the names and number of the ladies who did the final alteration repairs as well as my daughter’s, her friend’s, and my mom’s numbers if needed.
I am requesting that my money be refunded to me.  From not getting the dress finished by the promised date and the mistakes made, I feel that she did not perform the services that she was paid to do.

In regards to the complaint letter against ABJ (Alterations By Janet), our response is as...

follows: [redacted] brought her daughter [redacted] into our shop, ABJ, on April 26,2014 to have her prom dress hemmed. The dress consisted of 2 layers, a sheer overlay dress, a lining, and also had 2 sash pieces in the back which were the length of the dress.
[redacted] wanted only the overlay dress layer to be hemmed where I had pinned it (4 1/2") and the 2 sash pieces to be hemmed a lot shorter than the dress. I have a sewing room also at home and when I have a lot of work to do I take things home and work at night on them. I had taken a lot of dreeses home including [redacted]'s . All of the dresses were to be hemmed, dress and lining, with the exception of [redacted]'s. I measured and cut all dresses and linings to be hemmed at the pinned lengths. I immediately realized that I had cut the lining in [redacted]'s dress as well. I had made a bad mistake, there was nothing I could do but go on and hem it.
I called [redacted] to tell her ahead of time before [redacted] came in to try the dress on that I had hemmed the lining also and wanted to give her a heads up because I knew [redacted] would be upset. I explained to her that the lining could not be sewn back on because of the sheer layer the seam would be seen and look bad. I told her the only thing I could do was go buy lining material and reline the dress. [redacted] and [redacted] came in that day after school and [redacted] did not like the lining hemmed. The overlay dress layer was hemmed fine with the exception of 1 (one) 1 1/2" piece in the front that was hanging 1/4" longer. [redacted] commented 2 or 3 times how well she liked the way the sash's had a lot better flowing look since they were hemmed shorter than the dress. I told them I would go after work and get the lining material to match as close as I could to the original one, which I did. I took the dress home that night to take the lining out because the sheer overlay material is very delicate and takes a long time to get it apart , therefore I left the dress as intact as possible.
[redacted] came in the next day with another person and wanted to see the lining material. I showed it to her. She then wanted to see the dress. I told her it was at my house and I was going on my lunch break to cut the new lining where I had more room to lay it all out. I told her I would start sewing it when I got back and promised her I would have it done that same day. I promised her I would work on it however late I had to to get it done and call them to come in and have [redacted] try it on because I was going to cut the new lining longer than I needed to to make sure there were no problems with it. I told [redacted] it would not take but a few minutes to hem the lining and I would hem it while they waited on it. [redacted] said they were going to be too busy to come back in, so, I told her I would bring it to their home if she wanted me to. She said she did not want me to bring it to them.
I went home at lunch time and cut the new lining. I was late coming back to the shop because it took longer than I thought it would. When I arrived at the shop, there was a message on my voice mail from [redacted] stating she wanted me to stop exactly where I was on the dress and not do one more thing on it, that she was coming to pick it up that day. When [redacted] came in she was very rude and said I never said one time I was sorry. I thought I had said I was sorry and felt my actions to fix the problem would have also said I was sorry. [redacted] said she would never be back in the shop and would never refer me to anyone. I told her I never want her in my shop again and that I would appreciate her never referring me to any of her friends.
I totally feel I did ALL I could do to make my mistake good. I did 99% of the work on relining the dress and do not feel I owe [redacted] any money back.
I haven't stayed in business for 32 plus years by being dishonest and ripping people off. I have a very long list of satisfied happy customers. A few of which were unhappy and allowed me to work with them.
Sincerely,
