Ameco Solar is refusing to honor the warranty the sold me.
Ameco Solar installed my system 5 years ago (Summer of 2013). Anything can break, so one of the key factors for me was they provided in a contract a warranty of 20 years on the panels and 10 years for all other components. As with most modern solar system, they sold me a "power manager" to be able to monitor the production of each panel individually via an internet connection. The internet connection and monitoring failed months ago, and now the entire power manager has failed.

The current status of my system is that my power manager has completely failed. Ameco's employees stopped by and confirmed that. Meaning, I have no ability to monitor my panels individually or system as a whole. I don't know if one panel has failed, or all of the panels are failing, and I have no idea how much power my system is producing (if any).

Ameco Solar has told me in an email that they won't fix my system or honor my warranty. My contract with Ameco says, "for ten years, Ameco Solar Inc. warranties your solar system for repair or replacement," yet they are refusing to fix it or even return my phone calls or answer my email.

Desired Outcome

They should repair or replace my system as they promised and I paid for. Or refund the purchase price of my system and I'll get it fixed myself.

We installed this solar electric system using SolarBridge monitoring equipment that had been warranted until SolarBridge was purchased by SunPower Corporation, a company that has simply ceased providing support or making a replacement part. Although the system performance indicator ("power manager") has failed, we have, in many service calls, shown its owner that the system itself is still producing power. We have offered to install a separate meter to show the power output of the system, but without the manufacturer providing a solution, there is no such device that will communicate with the panels and display the energy state of each unit. We have really tried to discover a solution, but we are in the same fix as our customer. We did not make the equipment, we are a solar contractor. We have been and are still willing provide the labor to fix the problem, but without SunPower's cooperation and assistance, we just do not know what else we can do.

I do not accept their response.

Their talk of SunPower and SolarBridge in their reply is a meaningless smokescreen. Ameco Solar installed my system. I purchased my system directly from them. In my contract with Ameco Solar it says that Ameco Solar will provide the warranty and will repair or replace my system for 10 or 20 years depending on the component. We are at year five now. The warranty is in full force. Ameco using past tense when referring to the warranty in their reply is fallacious and misleading.

I'm glad Ameco agrees that my power monitor is broken, but they are lying when they say in their reply that they have "in many service calls." For this current problem, they came to the site ONCE! Since then, they have avoided my emails and phone calls. Additionally, it is true that they did determine that some power was being produced, but they admitted at the time that they couldn't tell if all the panels were working properly. As typical of most solar systems, Ameco sold to me and warranted individual panel monitoring. That is totally inoperative as admitted by Ameco in the reply. I have zero individual panel monitoring.

Another untruth in their statement: they never offered to install a separate power meter, but regardless, that wouldn't fix the problem or allow individual panel monitoring.

I purchased a typical complete system with full warranty from Ameco Solar. That system consisted of, 8 solar panels and requisite micro-inverters, installation, and a power monitor that via internet access provided individual monitoring of each panel and inverter as well as total output. Each panel and inverter has a separate lifetime and warranty, so it is imperative that each panel be able to be monitored.

Ameco has several times tried to say that can't do anything. But the purchase contract language says Ameco must "repair or replace" my system if it isn't working properly (not SunPower or SolarBridge). Ameco Solar is the overriding provider of my warranty.

In their reply, Ameco says there is nothing they can do, but that is ridiculous. There are 2 very obvious solutions.

Option one, the warranty says Ameco Solar will "repair of replace." If they cannot repair the system, as they claim, then it must be replaced. They can replace the necessary components to bring it up to standard. They are a solar company. Surely they can install working components, even if that means different monitor and compatible solar panels.

Option two, another obvious option would be to find the same or compatible monitor "on the open market." Ameco wants to walk away from the warranty by blaming another company, but I personally contacted the solar panel manufacturer and was referred to a company that sells the part. So even though Ameco Solar says the part is not available, I know first hand, the part IS available for purchase.

Ameco rightly says they will do the work, so the question becomes who pays for the part purchased from a third party? Again Ameco sold me a warranty for my entire system to repair or replace. Ameco must do what I paid for them to do when I paid for the warranty. They took my money hoping the system would never need repair. It didn't happen that way. They must bring my system up to proper standard.

My next option is hire a third party solar contractor to do the proper repairs, and take Ameco to court.

We have installed a functional & new (never used) replacement power manager, on July 27 '18. The company (ntctech.com) we bought the first unit from said that it was new and in the original box, which we did not open until our crew arrived at the home. We had communicated with the first company (ecoprosolar - which our customer had said possessed the power manager), but they called it a data logger and had no documentation or specifications. We subsequently located another company (ntctech.com) through the internet and paid this company $432.99 for the unit and installed it July 12. Sadly, it would not perform and it was evidently a used re-built, of which we became aware the same day we installed it. We called the original supplier (ecopro) back and we were assured that they had the power manager ("data logger") after we sent a photo. We placed an order for the unit - $450.80. When we installed the power manage it performed as expected and presumably is still operational now, four days later. We were not trying to find a less expensive unit as a substitute... the original supplier, Ecopro had referred to it as a data logger but the SolarBridge/SunPower appellation was Power Manager. The manufacturer, SunPower, recently offloaded their SolarBridge division and the parts are only recently available through third party vendors. Our customer's system has been making solar electricity throughout this entire process, but the monitor that allows one to see its power production has not been functional for a few months. He now has monitoring and can see energy production.

The case is still not resolved. Resolution may be close. Ameco Solar has told me that they will repair my system in accordance with the warranty. But that has yet to be accomplished.

They had told me parts were unavailable, but as I wrote before, parts are in fact available.

Ameco notified me that they found a part, but it turned out to be a "used part" that didn't function properly. They then ordered a new part from the vendor I found. That part should arrive and be installed next week (7-23 thru 30, 2018).

Credit to them, as of now, Ameco seems to giving proper effort. I will update next week.
