Regarding the Mazda Protegecomplaint we would like to correct some information and respond to some claims. We sell quite a few used cars and make every effort possible to ensure that that when the car leaves our lot it is in best possible condition and we are willing to help whenever we
can.When we first obtained the car there was a little smoke which appeared to be caused by very high oil levelAfter oil change there was no indication of any further problemsThat is what was disclosed to the customer and her father who said he was not worried about it as the engine sounded fine to himThey went for a test drive more than once and did not express any concernsThe young lady who was going to drive the car liked it because she could have "fun" and could "beat" on itIt was clear at the point of sale that the car was "SOLD AS IS" and there was no warranty.Few days later we got a call that the check engine light came on with a code for the MAF sensorWe offered to take a look and correct the issue but were told that her father would fix it.Not but days and 2,miles later we were called that the engine failed and had to be towed to a shop near Mauston, WIAlso in the conversation was mentioned that they had to put oil in the engine raising the possibility that it may have been run without oilCars need maintenanceIf there was a leak, taking care of it may have prevented engine failure. The mother also called demanding action and threatening lawyer and lemon law.We towed the car to our shop at our own expense the next dayUpon inspection the engine had a hole where one connecting rod came throughIt was 2,miles since it was purchasedHad there been a concern at point of sale the engine would not have made it that farConnecting rod failure is typically associated with lack of lubrication or over revving/abuse of the engineThis is a stick shift carWe offered to repair the car and cover all the labor costs if the customer would pay our parts costWe did not mark up any partsThis offer was readily acceptedThe repairs were completed the day after the replacement engine arrived and the customer chose the month parts only warranty option offered by the supplier12month/12,000miles warranty was offered but declined.Few days after the car was picked up we got a call that the check engine light came on, asking if the codes they had were indicative of a major concernOnce again we offered to double check our work and correct if possibleSince the codes had to do with MAF and an emissions solenoid the customer said that as long as it ran fine she was not really worried about it and her father would fix it if he could.We went above and beyond what any other shop would do to correct these issues and completed all work very quickly.Besides these there was no other contact with the customer
