I ordered 542 square feet of 5” solid prefinished Hickory plank flooring from Baird Brothers at the end of October, 2015. I’ll have to say I am more than pleased with the product supplied me and had a great experience with the entire order process. From my initial order interface with their sales people, right up to receiving the order by Fed Ex here in California, everything went pretty much flawlessly.
This was my first experience with ordering flooring from anyone outside our local area. I had more than a few qualms about placing an order for around $4000 with someone half way across the country that I had never done business with before. But I did my research online about Baird Brothers and found a lot of good things people had to say about them.
What originally attracted me to Baird Brothers, after doing an extensive search of local retailers and distributors, was that they offered long planks of pre-finished hickory at a very reasonable price. My local sources either couldn’t supply it or could only supply it at a price totally out of my budget. I encountered a couple other companies online that appeared to supply what I was seeking but just seemed too sketchy to be able to trust. The thoroughness of Baird Brothers website in answering virtually all my questions, and then a quick call to one of their sales people to get an answer on a shipping question I had, clinched the deal.
When I received the shipment I was impressed with the way it was securely packed on the pallet and sustained no damage. Fed Ex Freight did a great job in handling and I think the extra cost incurred by shipping with this carrier over other cheaper haulers is worthwhile.
There was a good balance in the lengths of the 2’ to 8’ planks supplied me. I was somewhat worried about this issue as I had heard complaints from many installers that acquired hardwood flooring from other sources that a majority of the planks they received in their orders were of shorter lengths in any particular length range. This seemed particularly true in the flooring that was acquired from the big box home improvement stores.
Now regarding the quality of the product I received. I feel it is superior to what I might have been able to obtain elsewhere. The precision to which they mill each plank is outstanding and the finish they put on the flooring seems to be very hard and durable. Based on my experiences with other flooring suppliers in the past, I had ordered about a 15% overage on this order thinking that I would end up scrapping a significant percentage of the product due to quality issues. But that didn’t turn out to be the case with their product. I ended up with virtually no scrap and have more than 10% leftover that I am wondering what I can do with.
The flooring they supplied me was for our master bedroom and the final phase of a multi-phase major remodel of our home. I just wish we had found Baird Brothers at the beginning of the remodeling of our home. Like my wife said as I laid down the last of your planks in our bedroom, “We should have done the entire house in this!”
I highly commend the efforts of Baird Brothers to supply a superior product at an affordable price.
