Exterior painting project - a list of hits and misses
Got the exterior painting of my home done in June 2022 from American Painting inc. It was chosen because of its good customer reviews in “Best Pick Reports”. My initial experience of contacting the office and getting a quote/ contract was quite prompt and good. However, the things started downhill once the project was signed and accepted.
First of all, the project could get started only after contacting the office through multiple calls, texting, and sending emails .The crew was not well organized, the supervisor didn’t provide any details of the tasks to be completed during the day, not much effort was made to protect the ground and plants during the pressure wash and scraping stages, had to pay 2.5 times the initial estimate of replacing the damaged cedar sidings, only 1 coat (white) finish done for the trim, soffits & facia, top parts of the chimney were left with old paint, and the ground area was not properly cleaned after the project completion.
The owner/ president of the company was sent a note to complete the left over top chimney covers but it was not done even after waiting for more than a month!
In a nutshell, here is the PROs and CONs list:
PROs: good start with detailed contract and reasonably priced quote.
CONs: after signing the contract you are left on your own to make extra efforts wasting your time and energy for pressing a start date, getting the project completed in a continuous fashion without any interruption, to make sure of asking the details for the day and what’s next, and to insist on getting a clean area and complete the unfinished things.

American Painting did my 22' high foyer and ceiling, adding architectural accents. Their idea. I'm so happy I decided to go ahead with it. They did beautiful work, completed in a very timely manner. Held their schedule to my "must be finished by" date. Clean and neat workmanship.. Not a single complaint. Was hesitant because of some of the other ratings, but went ahead with this company. Gary was actually extremely polite and informative. We've done our painting ourselves for many years. I am a stickler for quality workmanship. I would use this company again.

I had American Painting repair a 22’ high ceiling that had rust on it. The quote was done in a timely manner, the work done was excellent and they finished a day early! I am more than satisfied and I will have them do painting at my home next and I know I’ll be very satisfied! I highly recommend their service!

I just used American Painting for the fourth time. They did a great job again. Set up a appointment to quote me on the job, came when they said they would. Their was good. They came to paint and told me 2 days and they finished in a day and a half. I would highly recommend them.

I paid American Painting Inc. $2,175 to paint 2 ceiling, 1 bedroom wall, and my hallways (trim, walls, ceiling and doors). The quality of work was extremely poor. The interest and response from the President, *** was non-existent. When I call to inform of issues *** would not return calls and when I finally got through it was apparent that he did not care. As long as he got his money that was all that mattered.

One of his men broke my entry door *** and deadbolt. The painter left areas unpainted specifically around the doorknob hardware, the hinges and the board of the door. When I pointed this out to the painter and removed the *** to paint. He considered the job done but did not secure the *** back on the door. He came back secured the *** to the door. I went out my front door and closed it behind me, when I returned, I could not get back in and I heard pieces of the door *** fall to the floor. I had to break a window to gain entry to my home. I called painter and again he cam back and claimed that he did not tourch the door *** I had pics to prove otherwise. He fixed it again, this time it is no longer functional. The key will go into the lock, but it does not turn. It has been rendered nonfunctional. It is broken.

Thank you for the opportunity to reply to this customers complaint and concerns. We are dedicated to making sure all our customers are not just satisfied, but very happy with the finished project, so much so, that they call us when there is another project, and/or, be confident in referring us to their family, friends, & neighbors.

When thinking about this customers complaint, it surprises me. Yes, there were some issues with the door handle, and every time she called and let us know, the original crew who did her project, went back to her house to fix the issue. She was always there and approved all work. When the project was originally finished, the foreman walked the project with the customer and not only did she approve of everything, she complimented the work and was very happy. When she would call, her remarks about the work was completely opposite of what she had said to the painters. Of course, we will always continue to work with our customers, especially if something was broken due to one of the employees. We continued to go back to try and resolve this issue and every time, it was all fixed and she was happy when they left. We went several weeks without hearing from her, so we thought the last time they were there to work, all issues had been completed and approved. Receiving this complaint surprised us because we had not heard from her since the last time they were there. As soon as we read this, we notified her that moment to let her know we would be happy to replace the door handle. We installed it in less than a week from the date of this complaint. The new door handle purchased by customer was not at big as the original, so it left a “hole”. The painter went back to fill the area that the handle didn’t cover, and to paint both the inside & outside of the door at no charge. I received an email from customer that it had been taken care of & that she was very happy.

I hope this complaint is going to have a revision from the customer. We have always been willing to go back to fix any issues she had in the past, and we do care about our customers satisfaction and opinion.

We appreciate all our customers, all of our business, all of the time.

Sincerely

American Painting Inc.

In July of 2017 I had contracted with American Painting INC of St. Charles to paint the entire exterior of my home and garage. The contract clearly stated in the owner's handwriting " Spray finish all aluminum trim, soffits, fascia, siding. Paint all windows, wood sash, shutters, garage, garage doors, frames w/ 2 coats of *** Ultra Spec satin finish." Per my firsthand observation, only one coat of paint was applied. This was not denied by the actual painter. When it was brought to the owner's attention that only one coat of paint was applied and that the contract stated two coats, he stated that the painter uses an overlapping method when painting and that is considered the second coat of paint. I did disagree with him and stated that an actual second coat of paint can only be applied after the first coat has dried. I also informed him that I had accepted his bid, though it was higher than a competitor's bid who had quoted painting a single coat of paint, because he himself ( the American Painting INC. owner) had told me at the time of his bid that any house would need two coats of paint for good coverage.
The owner was very argumentative regarding the interpretation that the contract stated two coats of paint. In time, and with the additional backup that I obtained, a second coat of paint was applied to the siding of half of the garage and three sides of the house. (Only one coat was applied to the trim, doors, soffits window frames and shutters)
Close attention must be given to assure that what is written so easily in the American Painting contract is actually verified in the services rendered.
I would strongly suggest that a reliable person be always present at the time the service is provided to guarantee adherence to the contract.

DO NOT WORK WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!! The owner Gary is a misleading liar! When getting estimates for a paint project I asked if I could pay with credit card and he told me yes, they take all forms of payment. Fast forward to completion and now he says I have to pay money order! Oh and he threatened to put a LIEN on my house if I don't pay the way he wants me to!!!
REAL CLASS ACT!! Don't even bother with an estimate from him!!!
