American Roofing & Construction Reviews (%countItem)

On January 4th American Roofing came out to give my husband and I a bid on redoing our roof and adding a gable. They quoted us $8,000. We signed a contract and gave them half down. The contract stated ½ down ½ on completion. We were impressed with their prices so we asked them how much to add on a room to our house. They told us $11,500 my husband told them no we just can’t do that right now. His wife asked what our budget was and we told her $8,000. Her husband *** (who owns the company) said he could do it for $8500. We agreed signed a second contract and gave them the money for half down for that job as well. We were told the job should take no longer than 2 weeks. Their “crew” came out the following Sunday and dropped off the materials to get started Monday morning. Monday morning they did not show up until 11:30 am (This became a pattern) and started digging. The foundation piers were not done right. They fell over, so they dug father around the piers and poured more concrete, to fix the mess up. (no anchors were used) they finally started getting progress made had the floor done and that is when the big ice storm came. Instead of working on Saturday to get it ready for the storm they took off and put tarps over the untreated wood. Naturally that did nothing as water got all under the tarps and froze over in inch thick on the untreated wood. My husband and I had to remove the tarp and ice and put fans and heaters to try and dry out the wood. They came back almost had it completed when *** and *** asked for the rest of the money for the room because they ran into problems and had to buy extra materials. Like is we gave it to them but when my husband gave it to them he told them you will not get anymore money until the job is done. A few days later *** comes by with a $600 dollar bill for adding window and moving a door that wasn’t even installed yet. Can you smell the BS? We told them fine we will pay it when the job is completed. They continued working until we ran in to a problem. The valley of the old roof and the new roof was directly where the exhaust vent from our stove came out of the roof. When my husband saw what they did he call *** and he assured my husband the pipe would be moved he would take care of it personally. Well the guy shows up and decides he is going to make it work where it is. My husband told him no that’s a bad idea that going to create leaks! The owner of the company told my husband “Let me do you a favor and tell you what to do in the future if you are dealing with contractors you don’t question them. You let them do their job and then have it inspected when they are finished.” I am not even going to comment on that. Moving on…*** then came and asked my husband for the $600 from that bill. My husband said No, I already told you no more money, do ya’ll need the money that bad?” *** said it would help with payroll but they could pull it off a credit card no problems. This was a Tuesday she said they only had 3 more days of work they should be finished by Friday with the room and roof. So if the job would be finished by Friday she would have the rest of the money for payroll right? Anyhow Her husband *** called my phone looking for my husband. He was extremely aggressive with my husband. He told my husband “You offended my wife by asking if we need the money! It’s not about the money we make 5 Hundred thousand dollars a year. You talk to my wife like that again we will have some serious problems!” Wow okay. Anyhow *** said the guys would be at my house bright and early the next morning to get our roof knocked out should only take 2 more days. Big surprise no one showed up. The following day no one showed up either. So I texted *** and she said they were on another job and it would be the following week before the got to us. (let me say we had severe thunderstorms moving in that weekend and out room was still unfinished without a roof.) She told me to have my husband call ***. So he did. *** was completely rude and kept saying well you’re on my time and my schedule now. SO my husband said look give me the money back for the roof and we will call it even and I’ll finish the room myself. *** agreed to it. He said he would meet us a week from Friday at their office in Beaumont to give us our money and for us to sign papers. We agreed. I texted *** today and she said that their Lawyer said we breached the contract and not to speak with us anymore and their lawyer would be in contact. So I would not use these “Contractors” We now have an unfinished room and no roof and these people have over $9000 of our money.

The work agreement with American Tree Service involved cutting down 4 trees and hauling away the branches and trunk of a large oak tree. I do not live on the property (it is a cabin retreat on a creek in east Texas), so I made arrangements to use some of my vacation time during Thanksgiving week to be present for the work.
American Tree Service came to do the work on Monday, November 20. The two owners and two other workers arrived at 11:30 AM, later than planned, because they said they were waiting for their chainsaw to be fixed. I was concerned that they would not be able to finish the job in one day. When I asked what would happen if they didn’t finish the work that day, the owner told me they would come back the next day. They cut down all the trees and began loading the trailer to haul away the oak tree and I paid the full agreement price. (That was a big mistake on my part.) The two owners left around 2:00 PM. The two other workers continued to work on hauling away the oak tree debris, but they left around 5:00 PM claiming there were problems with the chain saw.
I received a phone call from one of the owners on Monday night asking if I was satisfied with the work. I told her the hauling away of the oak tree was incomplete. I also let her know that the pine tree was semi-fallen and leaning dangerously against another tree so it needed to be brought to the ground. She said she would talk to the workers.
Nobody came back the next day on Tuesday, November 21 and I did not receive a phone call explaining why. I called that afternoon and left a voice mail complaint but did not get a return call. I called again on November 22 and she said that the chain saw was in the shop and wouldn't be ready until Saturday afternoon, November 25. They offered to finish the work on Sunday, November 26. I had a conflict on that day but I said I would try to rearrange my schedule. But I was unable to change my schedule, so I called back and asked if they could come on Saturday, December 2. They said that day was good.
I drove to the property on Friday evening, December 1 (about 3 hour drive from my home) and got somewhat nervous because I had not heard from them. So I called on Saturday morning to find out when the workers would arrive. She said it would be in the afternoon around 3:00. Nobody ever came and I did not receive a phone call of explanation about the no show. I texted them to voice my strong dissatisfaction. I did not receive a reply until several days later when I posted a complaint with pictures on their business Facebook page.
The owner called right after the Facebook posting and apologized and said “we don’t leave our customers hanging.” But I did not get an explanation as to why they didn’t show up on Saturday. He gave me his personal cell phone number and said I should communicate with him directly. He said he could come finish the work on Saturday, December 9. I made arrangements for my brother to be on the property that day. I asked him what time of day the workers would arrive and he said he needed to check his schedule and would let me know. I did not hear back from him. I texted him on Friday evening, December 8, and asked what time they would arrive the next day to finish the work. He texted back that the ground was saturated because of several days of rain and the snow, so it would be difficult to get his trailer out of the property loaded with wood. I agreed. He texted that the ground needed to dry for a few days. I texted back and asked how long he wanted to wait. I did not get a reply. The next day I texted again and gave him three dates that my brother or my husband could come the property to finish the work. He has not replied. I decided to wait and see if he would make the effort to resolve this unfinished work, but have not heard anything back from him.
The work began on November 20 and it is now over 4 weeks later and the work, already paid for, is still not finished. I have initiated phone calls and texts to get this resolved. I have pictures of the incomplete work and a copy of the proposal agreement for the work. I also have saved phone messages and text messages to verify the details of my complaint.
American Tree Service is responsible for completing the work as stated on the proposal. Since I do not live on the property, I am more than willing to make necessary arrangements so that I, my brother, or my husband can be present. I am disappointed in the poor customer service, upset that I rearranged my schedule for no-show and no explanation, frustrated with the non-reply to phone messages, and lack of professional initiative on their part to get the job finished.

Attached you will find a copy of the original estimate. All of the tree work was completed that was included in the contract. The leaning pine that Mrs. mentioned was not included and would have been an extra charge. She mentioned it to one of my employees when I was not on the job site and he told her that she would have to inquire through me. We offered to come back that Saturday to perform the hauling and she said she would not be there. They would not leave the gate unlocked and the property is difficult to access when wet due to it being through a two mile cattle pasture with no road. She wanted us to come back the following weekend after that and contact her brother to schedule a time that would work for him. Due to Harvey we are very busy and are trying our best to accommodate all of our customers. Eighty percent of the oak tree was hauled off and due to difficult access and scheduling conflicts, we are unable to haul the additional twenty percent. We performed additional work for the customer while on site that was not included in the contract was given free of charge. We are also going to return half of what was charged for hauling the oak tree. The cost for hauling was $300 and we will send her a cashiers check for $150.Thank you,*** B. ***American Tree Service(409)489-6654www.americantreeservice.us

Revdex.com:

I will accept the refund but would like to state the following.

I am very dissatisfied with the outcome of this complaint because I wanted the job to be finished and it is very obvious that Mr. has no intention of completing the job. I need to go on record about the inaccuracies in Mr.’s statement.

1. Mr. and *** (I don’t know her last name) came to our property beforehand to see what work needed to be done. Maps and road signs clearly indicate that the road to our property is a County Road. He drove on that road before agreeing to do the job. His claim that he had to drive “through a two mile cattle pasture with no road” to get to our property is completely false.

2. Mr. offered a bid of $1500 for a day of work instead of a per tree price. He said he would give us the whole day and do whatever we needed within that day. He even suggested that we look around and see if any other tree work needed to be done. (Hauling away the oak tree was an extra $300.) I asked for a time frame for the work day and *** said it was 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. They arrived for the job at 11:30 and Mr. left around 2:00. He did not come back after that. His workers stopped early because of problems with the chain saw. Mr. claims that he “performed extra work…given free of charge” which is completely false. We paid him for a full day of work even though they arrived late, he was only on the property for about three hours, and his workers left early.

3. The pre-job discussion with Mr. and *** included taking down a rotten pine tree along with several other trees. They did not submit a written agreement before the job began, but I asked them to write the day price and the hauling price on the back of their advertisement card. When they arrived to do the job, I walked the property with Mr. to point out which trees we had discussed, the pine tree included. *** wrote out a “contract” while the trees were being cut down. The pine tree isn’t on the list because *** forgot to put it there.

4. I signed the “contract” not realizing the pine tree was not listed and paid for the work before the hauling was complete. That is my big mistake.

5. When Mr. cut down the pine tree, a large section of the top of the pine wedged upright against another tree. When he and *** didn’t come back after 2:00, I told his workers about it. The workers said I should talk to Mr.. I talked to *** on the phone later that evening and she said she would let Mr. know. Bringing the pine tree completely to the ground is NOT an unreasonable request or “extra work.” If an arborist cuts down a tree, it should end up safely on the ground.

6. I was the only contact person with *** and Mr.. I never asked him to “contact (my) brother to schedule a time.” I have text messages to prove that I inquired several times to reschedule a date to complete the job. I told him that my husband, my brother, or I would be present. Mr. did not respond to my messages.

7. He complained that we “would not leave the gate unlocked.” We never lock our gate. There is a chain with a latch to keep the gate closed but that is all. He seems to imply that we locked him out so he could not come back and finish the work, which is completely false.

8. Mr. claims he hauled away 80% of the oak tree but that is false. The entire trunk (at least 30 feet) and a large branch is still on the property. They hauled away two loads of tree branches but did not haul away the largest and heaviest parts of the tree. I hope Mr. does follow through with the refund of $150 for the cost of hauling.

Sincerely
