Amsoil, Inc. Reviews (2)

I started using this oil when my car was new and followed Amsoil's recommended change interval based on the type of oil purchased. All seemed to be well until a ticking noise became very noticeable at 142,000 miles. The mechanic stated that the cam and lifters had severe wear due to a lack of lubrication. The mechanic didn't find any other mechanical issues that would have contributed to this excessive wear. I sent Amsoil a sample for an analysis and the results showed the oil was operating within normal parameters and there were no contaminates negatively influencing the oil's lubrication abilities. Based on Amsoil’s technician advice, there is no sense on filing a warranty claim since the oil was operating within normal parameters. As I approached 168,000 miles, the ticking noise, which never completely went away after the first repair, returned even louder and for several months prior to my engine replacement, oil was being consumed at a rate of 1/2 quart every 500 miles. So the diagnosis was that there was excessive wear internally and that an engine replacement was needed. I had the engine replaced and filed a warranty claim with Amsoil. It took over a month to get a response and the representative I dealt with became extremely difficult to get a hold of and eventually she didn't return my last call. I just received a letter from Amsoil stating they wouldn't pay or the following reasons. First is that their oil analysis came back normal and there were no contaminates that would influence the oil's ability to lubricate. Next is that they had the right to ask to look at the engine, that’s true and in the warranty recitals, however they didn’t communicate their desire to look at it until it was too late, my mechanic had gotten rid of it. Next is that they refused to look at the cam and rocker arms, which I still have, because those parts are not part of the warranty claim. I disagree since these components are a significant factor showing that the excessive wear began more than 20,000 miles ago and more than prove that the oil wasn’t providing significant protection back then. For how long the oil hasn’t been providing protection is impossible to determine, however it’s obvious it wasn’t working. Last is that they claim the oil loss occurring prior to the engine replacement must have been a contributing factor to the wear. The problem with that logic is that when the cam and rocker arms were replaced, there was no oil consumption. Also, if I maintained the oil level at less than a 1 quart loss for only a few months before replacing the engine, how is that a contributing factor at this point? Like I stated earlier, there was no oil loss when the first components were replaced. Now you have an idea of how Amsoil treats a once loyal customer with a legitimate claim. Draw your own conclusions, however be extremely wary of Amsoil’s claims how their oil performs.

Response:

The customer called at approximately 6:34 pm on April 7, 2015, to report receiving product code GLD3P rather than GLCCR. Orders placed via the internet by customers go direct to the Distribution Center. Our operator explained the order was properly completed as placed, that GLCCR could be sent out (and discussed pricing) and the GLD3P returned for credit. That advice was not satisfactory and the customer called back. A second operator confirmed the same information and offered to ship the new order freight-free and to credit the incorrect product on its return, which also was not satisfactory. On April 8, a satisfactory resolution was reached when a supervisor contacted the customer and conveyed that GLCCR was being shipped to him that day, without charge, and that he could keep the GLD3P. He thanked her and the call ended.
