Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2015/07/16) */
Mr. & Mrs. [redacted] brought in there fiberglass boat to have the deck painted and the transom wood replaced.
This boat is 65 years old and is not in good condition. The deck was full of cracks in the gel coat finish due to neglect and age. ...

To do a nice job of painting the deck, all of the defects and cracks would have to be ground out and repaired. I gave them a price of $5,000.00 to repair the deck and do a nice job of painting. They said they couldn't afford that kind of a job and asked how much to not do anything with the surface defects, or repairing the 20 or so holes that were drilled in the deck to hold the windshield and miscellaneous hardware. I gave them a price of $2,000 to sand and paint the deck and not including repairing the holes in the deck and repairing the cracks in the surface. We don't like doing this kind of a paint job because it does not look nice when done.
So after starting the job my foreman came up to me and told me that the repair person had already repaired the holes in the deck which Mr. [redacted] had told me not to repair the holes because he did not have the $650.00 that I quoted him to repair the holes. So we did repair the holes but did not get paid for doing and I never asked to get paid.
After starting the job my foreman asked me to call Mr. [redacted] and see if he would spend another $1,000 to repair most of the dents in the deck so it would be a nicer job, Mr. [redacted] declined. So we painted the boat, we made a mistake and painted the boat the wrong color, so we told them to bring the boat back and we would paint the boat the color they has chosen earlier.
This is our very busy season and when the boat was brought back we painted it as fast as we could and worked it into our work load.
Mrs. [redacted] is complaining about marks in the finish and alleges that we didn't sand their boat. We thoroughly sanded the boat twice, the marks she is complaining about are the defects in the original gel coat that they declined to pay to have repaired.
They brought the boat in needing a quality $5,000.00 paint job and a $1,000.00 transom replacement, a total of $6,000.00. They paid $2,000.00 for a paint job and $1000 for the wood transom replacement. I warned them that the $2000 paint job that they had opted for would be far from perfect and that a lot of the cracks and defects would show. When they came to pick up the boat they expected the job to be the $5,000 quality paint job that was perfect. They didn't pay for that kind of job.
Mrs. [redacted] always had an attitude, was rude and sarcastic, we did not enjoy working with her.
Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 7, 2015/07/19) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Anchor Marine has responded with a lot of things that are incorrect. Vic told us the boat was in good condition for its age. Vic told us he would paint the entire boat for $5000 and repair the transom for $1000. We told him the boat wasn't worth putting that much money into it. Vic agreed. We never said we couldn't afford it. We told him to just do the transom. He is the one that suggested only doing the top portion of the boat and not painting the bottom of the boat. He said he would paint the top of the boat for $2000. Regretfully he is forgetting to mention painting part of the boat to painting the entire boat. He states in his response to Revdex.com that they don't like doing this kind of job yet it was his idea. As for the repairing of the holes again Vic said he would do it and had me circle what holes were to be filled in. I have attached the quote that Vic gave us on May 2, 2015. On this quote it shows repair holes on deck. It does not have an amount as Vic told us he would fix them with no charge. Amazingly the day before we were to pick up the boat Vic calls and said he needs $1000 more to paint the top of the boat. I said just do the transom only. Vic said they have $2000 worth of sanding and preparation done. But if you give me cash I will make it look real good.(If you look at the attached pictures you can see very little sanding was done) When we paid Vic cash on June 13, 2015, we asked for a receipt for the cash we gave him. As you can see on the next receipt he has added $600 to the quote and put the year as 1950's compared to the original quote that just said 50's. He now is telling the Revdex.com he told us $650 to repair the deck. Not true. Again Vic said no charge. The quote he revised for his records shows $600. Again he is saying we don't have money. Our finances were never discussed with him. On the original quote he also wrote down the name and phone number of the place he uses to get boat seats repaired. The receipt we got from him for the cash we paid him doesn't have this information on it. He is being very dishonest with this whole job. He has changed the paper work. The original work order shows they would sand all dents smooth. He now states they never said they would sand them out. He states the paint job should have been $5000 to get a good job. He told us we would get a good job for $2000 if he painted only the top and not the whole boat. The attitude he is talking about has come from Anchor Marine. Attached are the 2 quotes; the one we received when we left the boat the first time and the one that was tampered with. Also pictures of the boat which shows places where paint is missing and the overspray on the white portion of the boat and trailer. If the attachments didn't go thru please let me know.
Final Business Response /* (4000, 9, 2015/07/29) */
I did say the boat was in good condition for its age, 60+ years, but that does not mean it was in good shape. The transom wood was completely rotted out, the deck had 15 or 20 cracks in the gel coat finish, there was numerous holes drilled in the deck from previous owners. Most boats this age are worse. I gave Mr. [redacted] a price of $5,000 to repair all of the cracks, holes and gouges in the deck and give them a beautiful paint job on the top deck, not the complete boat. They didn't want to spend $5,000 for this job, they only wanted to spend $2,000. I explained to them that for $2,000 we wouldn't do any repairs to the deck and after it would be painted. The cracks in the gel coat and gouges would show because the paint wouldn't cover them up, they said they understood that.
Now that the boat is painted with no repairs been having been done to the deck, because they wouldn't pay for that, they are not happy because the job is not perfect they expect to get a $5,000 job for $2,000.
Overall without doing the repairs to the deck, the boat looks nicer than I thought it would, for the $2,000 they spent just painting the deck the boat is not perfect but it looks very nice, for the money they spent they got a very nice job.
