saddening to read Miss [redacted]'s impressions of their visit here. I want the care of both our patients and their owners to be excellent from this hospital. It makes me sad to read of their and their dog's pain.I am going to address some of her comments as I was the doctor who saw them and their dog that night. It is embarrassing to read that the clipboard was snatched from her hand. Reading that does not make me happy. One of the first steps that was taken for the dog was to obtain verbal permission to give him and injection for pain, which was in response to the owners' concerns as well as mine. During the course of my examination I stated that I was concerned about the size of the dog's prostate and the fact that he had a testicular tumor. I was also very concerned about how dehydrated he was. I was concerned that he would benefit most with intravenous fluid therapy and pain medication along with antibiotics because of the possibility that he had an infection or cancer in his prostate. One of the diagnostics that I recommended was radiographs which is what the owners where the owners wanted to start diagnostically. These showed accumulation of stool and an enlarged prostate which could have been contributing to his inability to pass the stool. The additional radiograph that was taken was to obtain a better view of this part of his body. (The owners were not charged for the additional radiograph). When I went over the radiographs with the owners I pointed out the enlarged prostate and the possibility that it was impeding the dog's ability to pass stool. Earlier I had attempted to call the lab that was running the dog's labwork for his veterinarian at another location in Delano and they were closed. The owners thanked me for that effort. During the discussion about the radiographs Miss [redacted] asked if they could just have a laxative and then take him home. I said that the dog was very dehydrated and that cause more problems with his constipation because of bowel dehydration. I recommended that he at least receive some fluids under his skin to address the dehydration. An enema was asked about. He was given and enema and the owners were asked if they would like a stool softener for his as well to be prescribed. They did want this so it was prescribed and his first dose was given as he went home so they could see how it would be given. In my discharge instructions I discussed that there were arthritic changes in the dog's spine visible on the radiographs which could also be contributing to his pain. Spinal arthritis in an intact dog can be due to infections in the prostate so I recommended that they continue with the antibiotics that their doctor had started for their dog when he sent him home earlier in the week. I feel very bad for this dog and will plan to refund the money paid to us for his care because I feel bad for their pain and the dog's pain. I personally do not remember being irritated or short with them. I am disappointed in my staff if they were rude or short with these owners. I did the best I could to take care of him and their wishes.  Sincerely,Dr. [redacted]
