Animal Rescue League of Berks County Reviews (1)

To whom it may concern,
We arrived at the animal Shelter early, by mistake. I was under the impression they opened at ten, not eleven. A woman was unloading things from her car. I asked if she needed help, as I thought they were donations. It was a feral cat she had caught in a Have-a-Heart trap. I carried it inside, since it would have been impolite to refuse after having offered my help. We placed it on the ground. The cat would not stop yowling. I picked up the cage and set it back down in case it had had its tail outside the cage when I put it down. I stayed with the cat while the woman went to talk with the staff about the cat. One of the staff ordered me and my CI to the front.
We waited in the front office until 10:55 to begin a normal day of volunteering, when the same staff member asked my CI for his staff supervisor’s phone number. I asked for what they. She replied to my CI, not to me. References were made to it not being the Animal Rescue League’s job to “babysit” me, and to it being the CI’s job to “babysit” me. She also made claims that every time I am at the animal rescue league, I break rules, while the CI is somewhere else. We have never been provided with a list of rules at the ARL, despite previously asking for such, and these rules have never been clarified, only reprimands for breaking these unstated rules. She also complained of a lack of training on the CI’s part, despite the ARL not offering any training of any sort. This was all addressed to my CI. My comments, directly addressed to here, were ignored. It was this point that I informed my CI we were leaving. He continued to listen to her tirades while I walked out to the car. I then went back inside to retrieve him.
The staff of the Animal Rescue League has, on the whole, been consistently rude and condescending to me, due to the perception by them that I am “rded”. I have experienced little to no issues at my other volunteer positions at The Humane Society of Berks County, Free Greek Penn or The Greater Reading Food Bank. I realize that the staff is often under a great deal of stress due to frequent higher management turnovers and the great workload. I do not ask for special treatment; merely to be treated with the respect due to me as a human being who is volunteering their time and effort to help animals.
Signed,
Michael
