Antonio and Son Contracting Reviews (4)

Review: Antonio & Son Contractors provided [redacted]. with a quote to replace all of the external capstones around [redacted] facility. Antonio & Son was awarded the project, and subsequently installed the new capstones, which should last a lifetime (if the proper materials are selected & professionally installed).[redacted] paid Antonio & Son Contractors in full ($11,333) at the completion of the project per Antonio & Son's payment terms. Unfortunately, the new capstones began to crack, flake, erode, etc. after only a few months in place. In less than a year, the capstones began to look terrible, and were clearly in need of replacement.[redacted] contacted Antonio & Son to evaluate the issue(s). Antonio & Son physically reviewed the condition of the new capstones and agreed that they were defective. They informed [redacted] that after further research on their end, they were able to determine that the capstones that they installed were from a "defective lot", and agreed to replace them under warranty with another set as originally contracted to do so (at no charge to [redacted]). After multiple delays & repeated follow-ups, they eventually replaced the capstones with a second set/lot. But once again after a few short months the second set/lot of capstones began to exhibit the same issues (cracking, flaking, eroding, etc.).[redacted] contacted Antonio & Son for a second time to review the capstones after the corresponding issues/poor quality resurfaced. This time, Antonio & Son informed [redacted] that (according to their supplier/manufacturer) the capstones that they speced out for the job were not intended for external use, and are not weather resistant. For the second time, Antonio & Son agreed to replace all of the capstones under warranty (at no charge to [redacted]).Unfortunately, [redacted] cannot get a response from Antonio & Son after a number of months and countless follow-up phones calls to inquire into the status of the replacement capstones & the installation timeframe.Desired Settlement: [redacted] preferred resolution is for Antonio & Son Contractors to stand behind their warranty & to honor their word to replace all of the capstones around [redacted] facility with the correctly specified materials (as originally contracted) for the project. Thus, the capstones should be properly speced out for the typical weather conditions in Erie, PA (especially harsh winter conditions), and ultimately should last a lifetime.Alternatively, [redacted] would agree to a full refund.

Response:

In regards to the complaint filed against our company by [redacted]., Yes the capstones deteriorated at an alarming rate. We replaced several at our own expense when the Manufacturer refused to warrant their product The proper capstone was ordered and we believed was the correct material delivered. Since the problem has arisen the Manufacturer has sold and the new company refused to honor the warranty of the previous manufacturer. Several attempts have been made to secure replacement capstones to match the existing. We hope to locate and replace these capstone as explained to “Frank’ at [redacted]. He became very belligerent insulting (bullying at a childish nature) and we found talking with him impossible. I have kept several of his voice mail messages to substantiate this. We would happily make arrangements with another representative of his company to rectify this problem. Attached is a copy of our accepted agreement with [redacted]. Unfortunately nowhere does it state that these capstones have a lifetime warranty, either implied or ‘written. I will attempt to contact another representative of [redacted] once I receive a response from you.

Consumer

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me, (i.e. that Antonio & Son Contractors will replace all broken, cracked, chipped, etc. capstones at no additional charge to [redacted]), along with a couple of additional specific details:

1. I will personally coordinate the capstone replacement effort from the [redacted] side, and will personally ensure that all members of the Antonio & Son team will be treated with respect & professionalism throughout the replacement project/effort. I request & expect the same in return.

a. With that in mind, I will also personally meet with whomever Antonio & Son Contractors designates as their project manager to physically inspect all of the capstones at [redacted] and to identify & document every capstone that is broken, cracked, chipped, etc., and thus requires replacement. And I would like a copy of that documentation that memoralizes the physical inspection for both parties.

2. I would like a specific expected useful life for the capstones at [redacted] that is provided/detailed in writing from Antonio & Son Contractors, and which is consistent with general industry expectations/standards for an external capstone in the Erie, PA area.

3. I would like a specific (reasonable) project start date & corresponding completion date (during the external construction season of 2014), also specified in writing from Antonio & Son Contractors, along with the specific consequences should Antonio & Sons fail to meet those dates (i.e. failure to perform).

4. Finally, I would like written sign-off to formally signify the acceptable completion of the replacement project/effort at [redacted], and will be happy to provide a physical copy to Antonio & Son Contractors for their files.

Regards,

President - [redacted].

Review: I am.writing about a problem with the company of A[redacted] and Son Contracting, [redacted] and the service we have received thus far. On Friday, 12/20/20 13, there was a water leak in our living room coming from the chimney, and the water caused damage to items in that area. My husband, [redacted], who is disabled and confined to a wheelchair(he suffered a massive stroke in August, 2009 and is paralyzed on the entire left side and partially blind) was in his chair and since I was at work at the time, he called family members and a roofer to help him with the problem. I got home by 10:30 am before anyone else arrived, cleaned the area of water and removed damaged items The men came and checked the roof and there was no p[redacted]lem with the roof— they said it was the chinmey area, so we called A[redacted] and Son for the chimney, which they scheduled to come out at noon on that day. [redacted] arrived on time, and after inspecting the area, said it was the exterior chimney that caused the problem. He said their company would power wash all the brick, then tuck point all deteriorating mortar joints by cutting to a depth of l/2 to 34”, clean new cavity and re-point with Type S Mortar, striking all new joints. They would re-coat the existing capstone with Crown Coat and inspect existing flashing to seal any holes or openings with NPI as needed. Mr. [redacted] said he would send a contract with the estimate of cost, and that the work couldn’t be done until the spring as the weather had to be over 50 degrees for a week. If need be and water continued to leak in the house, he said he could do a quick fix by putting a capstone on the fireplace outside. Mr. [redacted] said a contract with the estimate would be sent outright away. Since the contract and estimate wasn’t received, I called the company after the new year, and Mr. [redacted] said it was sent out weeks before — we received the contract on 01/08/2014, and it was dated 12/26/2013. At the end of March, 2014, [redacted] called to make an appt for the work to be done on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. I called the company on Friday, 03/28/20 14, to postpone the appt on Tuesday in April since Harborcreek Township was going to fill in our front ditch for safety reasons for my husband in his wheelchair and they would have the driveway torn up. On 04/22/20 14, I called and spoke to [redacted] at A[redacted] and Son, and asked to be put back on the chimney work list. The work was then scheduled for Friday, 05/16/20 14 and the crew arrived that morning. In the afternoon, I went to check on the crew and there was a large hole on the side of the house. [redacted] (who said he was in charge of the group) admitted to falling off the ladder earlier and that he grabbed the gutter when he fell, causing a hole and crack in the siding of the house. He then took a picture on his cell phone of the damage and sent it to his boss. After assuring the foreman was ok, I came in the house and called the company and spoke to [redacted] who said she wasn’t aware of the incident yet but said all would be taken care of and nothing more needed to be done. I gave [redacted] a paper I had on file from the siding so he could know the color and type for repair. He sent the crew home while waiting for his boss and another guy to come to check the damage on the siding and for the mortar to dry on the chimney so he could color it —they put Styrofoam on the hole and crack and assured it would be fixed. At 4:00 pm, [redacted] arrived and took a piece of siding to match — I gave him the info I had on the siding, and once again he assured all would be taken care of. At 5:00 pm, [redacted] rang the doorbell and said he would be back on Monday afternoon, the siding had to be special ordered and would be in then, he asked for payment of the chimney work, and I said it would be paid when all the work was done on Monday. I then went to check on the work of the chimney, and had to clean up energy drink cans, apple cores, and other trash thrown on the side of the house from the crew. On Monday, 05/19/20 14, when we got home, neighbors told us someone had come to the house and did some work in the back.[redacted] was on the answer machine, and said all work was done and to call to make arrangements to pay. I called the company at 2:30 pm, and spoke with [redacted] who said she sent someone out immediately to fix the siding as she felt bad about what happened, I told her about the trash and monster energy drink cans and she apologized. [redacted] came at 4:00 pm and check #753 in the amount of$ 1200 was given to him for the chimney work done. I also told him about the trash and he apologized, said he has spoken to the guys before about the issue and may have to make a new rule.On 06/08/20 14, I called A[redacted] and Son, as when we arrived home, there was dripping water in the fireplace and I had to put the pot and towels back in the area. At noon the next day, [redacted] called and said guys were on their way now to check the area again. On06/09/2014, the men from A[redacted] and Son said the gutter was tilted where water filled up and leaked and there was a crack in the area that they also sealed (which wasn’t done the first time). They said if there is any more water at all to call the company as it is guaranteed. On 06/12/2014, the water began leaking again and I called at 11:30 am and spoke with [redacted] who said she will pass on the information and she would call when the men can come back again. It rained at 3:50 pm, and began dripping at 4:16 pm in 3 places worse than before. Messages were left on the machine at A[redacted] and Son on 06/24 about the water starting to cause damage to the house now. On 06/25 another message was left about bedroom plaster bubbling and leaking near the chimney that was done. On 06/26/2014 another message was left again about the bubbles in the ceiling which were getting worse, and I said that the next contact would be to the Revdex.com. About an hour later, [redacted] called and said she was out with pneumonia and someone who covered for her did not handle things as she would have, she apologized, and said someone would be out the next day to check on the problems with the ceiling that I reiterated. She would call later in the day as to an exact time they would be out. Due to my husband’s disability and the fact I had to go to work, my brother-inlaw came to Erie to stay for the weekend so someone could be here for the A[redacted] and Son crew. However, there has been no call and to our knowledge, no one has shown up from A[redacted] and Son about this issue. It has rained since this time, and water continues to drip in the fireplace area and there is still ceiling damage in the bedroom.Desired Settlement: Repair

Review: Antonio and Son Contracting was contracted to cut and remove our concrete floor in the basement and install a French drain and a sump pump to stop water leakage. They received $3,800.00. The job was mostly completed five months ago. They never returned to do clean up. They ruined the carpet leading in to the basement and left chucks of concrete in the yard. We contacted them and scheduled appointments to which no one ever showed up. I have several text messages back and forth to prove all of this. Then we were told they fired the men they sent to our home. The mortar on the wall has never been dry. It has been dark grey and damp to the touch since the work was completed. We have contacted them on many occasions. They returned and redid some of the work at one point a couple of months ago. Now it is leaking again. Not just in one place but, in multiple places. Also where the pump was ran outside the dirk around it has collapsed and now there is a whole where they put in the drain. I contacted them and was told they will not be coming back. I have it in writing that the system is guaranteed and warranted for LIFE.Desired Settlement: I would like a refund so that I can have another company come and do the job right.

I review the complaint filed against up by Ms. [redacted]. The waterproofing we

Review: Hired Antonio and Son to replace single garage floor and put in drain. Project was done the first week in November of 2015. The son did the project and decided not to put a drain in the floor even though contract specifically documented placement of a drain. Project was completed in 2 days. I had a disagreement with the son over damage to left front frame of garage door. It appeared as though some heavy object had smashed into the frame. He claimed they didn't do the damage, that it had been there. I then contacted his mother who answers the phone for the business. She said they didn't think they did the damage but would take care of it. When she came to get payment from me on 11/6/15, she told me to contact my overhead door company to get the repair done. We agreed that I would get the estimate of damage and they would pay for it. We also agreed that I would have the overhead door company contact them once the damage was surveyed. Overhead door company quoted repair at $335.50. They then informed me that Antonio and Son themselves needed to contact them for appropriate billing information so work could be started. I left a phone message with Antonio and Son reiterating all that. No reply. I followed up by sending them an email with the proposal on 11/11/15. No response. It wasn't until I called them 12/19/15 regarding the disastrous garage floor problem that I was told by the wife that they never received the email.

It was after a snowfall, the week of December 14, that I became aware of all the melting snow and slush draining to the right side of my garage, which was against my inside wall. That is why I contacted Antonio and Son on 12/19/15. Another discussion ensued with the wife and we agreed that having them come and look at this mistake could wait until after the holidays. Subsequently, I started to call them the first week in January (2016) and did not receive responses to any of my voicemails. Finally, one of my phone calls was answered by the wife and we set up an appointment for her husband to look at the disastrous job at 10am on 1/16/16. On that designated day and time, I waited and I waited. No one showed up. I left 3 voicemails at Antonio and Son to inform them that I was waiting for the father to show and also told them I felt taken advantage of. At about 10:45am, the wife called me back and said she'd been on the phone when I left my 3 voicemails and that her husband was at a job in Findley Lake and couldn't come. We set up another appointment for the husband to come Tuesday 1/19/16 at 6:30pm. On that date I received a text message from the wife saying her husband couldn't come. She promised, in the text, to get her husband to my house the end of the week or Saturday. I had had enough and texted her back saying that based on their responsiveness and lack of follow up, I wanted an immediate refund---which was $2900.00. The wife contacted me again and set up an appointment for her husband to come Tuesday, 1/26/16 at 6pm. On that night, the son, who did the garage floor, came. He looked at the floor and agreed that it wasn't supposed to be like that, with the water draining to the right side of the garage. He wanted to redo the floor for me since it was his mistake. But, I told him I wouldn't trust that it would be done right and I wanted my money back. I wanted to get another contractor. He then told me that I wouldn't get a contractor to do the job at this time, and I said I knew that but I also knew I had to start contacting contractors now to get the job set up for spring. Plus, he also reprimanded me and told me all of this could have been handled over the phone. I responded that no one would answer my phone calls. He did tell me to give him some time to get my money back. When I asked how long, he said to give him 2 weeks. Something about having to contact his lawyer. I gave him 1 month and called today. The wife talked to me and said she sent me a letter 2 weeks ago, which I did not receive. I didn't ask the contents of the letter. But, she did tell me they don't have the money to pay me. Further conversation ensued and she asked me to consider having her son redo the job. I said I did not want him to do it. I am planning on having another contractor do the job. She said to give her until the end of this week to reimburse me for the garage floor. It would also be nice to get reimbursed for the damage to the frame of the garage totalling $335.00. Based upon their track record with me, I would be surprised if they stuck to their word and made financial retribution, but the answer will be known at the end of this week.Desired Settlement: Refund of $2900.00 for garage floor and $335.00 for garage door frame damage, totalling $3235.00.

Response:

We regret the delay in responding to Mrs. [redacted]’s complaint. She has also contacted us thru her Attorney. We acknowledged the problem she was having with her garage floor and she agreed to allow us to correct it once weather was permitting. An inspector was sent to review the problem and correction. At that time she was very upset as the inspector she wanted did not meet with her. I contacted her via phone and at that time she stated that she had hired another contractor and would not allow us to correct the problem. She demanded a full refund of the contracted amount. On February 29th we received a letter from her attorney also demanding a full refund of work preformed, letter attached. We would prefer to correct any problems. Please advise as to how we proceed from here.
