I did a walk-in to request a cancellation of my membership (key fob # ***) with Anytime Fitness at *** (Club #***) due to home and work relocation.

As per the contract, I can 'cancel it by providing a 30-day written notice, proof of relocation, and a $50 early cancellation fee'.

I tried to approached the sale associate for cancellation due to relocation. Apparently, she was not aware of such a term on their cancellation policy until I showed her the original contract. Then she changed her word and persuaded me to stayed even after I iterated my will to cancel. To my point of view, it is unethical to asked customers to stay and pay for the service that they will never use anymore. Again, I restated my decision of cancellation. Then she asked to pay two month's membership fee and $50 plus tax. I had no idea why I should pay two month's dues even I have given my 30 day notice and tax for that $50 cancellation fee which is not stated on the contract anywhere. Then I asked to talked to the manager, which is refused without giving any proper reason.

Desired Outcome

Terminate my contract and stop charging me any fee or dues immediately. Plus an apology for doing business unethically.

Mr. walked in to the facility on Monday, September 25, 2017 around 1pm. My co-worker and I were behind the front desk when Mr. approached us and began to ask questions in regards to his membership.

As protocol requires, I looked Mr. up in our database to get the information about his membership. He then proceeded to state that he was either going to cancel his membership or transfer the remaining months over to another person.

He initially started to ask questions about the process of transferring over his account to another person. That would have not been an issue if Mr. knew the individual personally, which he did not, therefore we cannot transfer the account for him.

I then explained to Mr. that he has two more months on his membership term, with a current payoff of $88.14. According to our policy, we require 30-day notice of cancellation, therefore canceling now would mean payment of one final draft of $44.07 (dated Oct.1st 2017), plus $50.00 cancellation fee, equaling a total of $94.07. I was simply trying to explain this difference and I believe he interpreted this as me trying to persuade him to stay.

Mr. had finally asked to speak to a manager and I explained to him that both owners were not in the club and advised him to come in tomorrow to discuss this with them.

Mr. came in the next day and spoke to ***, one of the owners. He cancelled his account, paid the $94.07 owing, and made no mention of having an issue with the customer service he received the day before. *** was unaware of the situation until we received this complaint via Revdex.com.

I was asked to pay $146.9 in total to cancel my membership at first, which includes two month's membership and cancellation fee plus tax. I questioned why I had to pay for an extra month. The sale associate then called her manager to confirm that I only need to pay one month' s membership and cancellation fee plus tax, totaling $101.7. The contract though clearly indicates the $50 cancellation fee is either tax-embedded or tax-exemt. So I requested the sale associate to call the mananger again to reconfirm this issue, but was rebuffed. I tried other way to settle the disagreement, but the sale associate was not cooperative at all. Instead she asked me to come back tomorrow or go home to wait for her manager's phone call, which never happened. She definately ignored that fact it costs me about three hours to drive 150 km back and forth from Barrie to Woodbridge and never told anybody about this issue, as nobody has any clue about what happened on Monday when I talked to her coworkers on the next day.

In the whole process, I feel that Anytime Fitness Woodbridge was not taking any initiative to resolve the issue. The customer service was at all time giving false and misleading information to pull as much money from customers as possible rather than focusing on after-sale services. Again, as compensation for the extra time and effort that costed me to travel between two distant cities to settle this issue, I am requesting to refund what I have been charged and stop charging me what I will be charged as I will no longer be able to use the service.

Mr. we did terminate your contract immediately and will no longer charge any future fee's. We apologize for the misunderstanding, we did our best to resolve and fix the issue when you came in to speak with the owner. Please contact the club directly should you require any further assistance. We will be more than willing to help.

Again, I am asking for compensation for the time wasted on the travel on the next day.

If it were not the customer service's lack of sincerity and perfunctory responses, I would not have to come in again on the next day. She could have accepted my suggestion to call either of her managers again, or she could have either of them to call me as she promised. However, either of these two simple options was done.

I was not mad at the fact I have to pay extra fee to cancel my membership. Instead, the reaction of that customer service representative on that day was clearly emotional. She laterally force me to come in to the store again, which was not necessary.
