Review: I own an iPhone 5 that I bought in 2013 and the power button stopped working. Apparently this is due to a manufacturing fault. Apple never bothered to send a recall for it but when I searched online I found this webpage[redacted]Which admits the problem and states that apple will fix the phone for free. I checked online and my device was eligible for this "free" repair regardless of the warranty status. So I went to the apple store on [redacted] where the clerk informed me that since there's a tiny crack in the screen they are unable to fix the power button issue unless I paid $140 to fix the screen first.I pointed out to the clerk that (a) I have no problem with the tiny crack and have no desire to pay $140 to fix it. (b) since the problem was due to apple's manufacturing fault they have full responsibility to fix my device and if the tiny crack in the screen is preventing them from doing so they should either fix it for free or give me a new device. (c) For $140 I could get a new phone from my service provider. At that point the clerk tried to make an analogue with a car manufacturer issuing a recall and said that if a car has suffered engine damage that prevents the manufacturer from fixing the issue they would not do so. There's really zero comparison between an iPhone and a car. For one thing a car cost to the manufacturer is by orders of magnitude higher than what it costs apple to manufacture an iPhone. The fact is that Apple have released a defective product and are now declining to service it. For a brand that claims to have quality products and great customer support that is the exact opposite on both accounts.Desired Settlement: I would like my iPhone 5 fixed for free or to receive a replacement.Anything requiring payment on my side is unacceptable.
