Appleton Marble & Granite Works, Inc.

Review: I brought a piece of marble to Appleton Marble & Granite Works (1708 E. Wisconsin Ave, Appleton, WI) to be cut to specific measurements. I was told that the cuts could be made for a cost of $80 and was provided an invoice indicating price only. The invoice did not include terms and conditions regarding liability. Approximately 2 weeks later, I was contacted by the company and notified that the piece of marble had broken while being cut. I went to the business to assess the damage, and found that the piece of marble I had brought in was completely cracked in two pieces. I was then notified by the company that they could repair the damage and make it as good as new. The company failed to take responsibility for the damages, and stated that this is a common occurrence when working with marble. Again, this information was never disclosed prior to services being rendered. Approximately two weeks later, I was again contacted by the company to notify me that the repairs had been made. Upon returning to the business, I witnessed the marble had been put back together; however, there is a noticeable crack across the entire piece of marble, and the two sides of the crack did not sit level with each other. When confronted about the poor quality of the repair, I was informed by the store owner that the business does not take responsibility for broken products. When questioned about the lack of notification regarding liability, the owner indicated to me that it was not his responsibility to notify me of this prior to services being rendered. Had notification about the possibility of the marble cracking been provided to me, I would not have requested to have the marble cut. This is a personally meaningful piece of stone from a family member who has passed away that has now been ruined. The owner of the company failed to compromise on pricing or liability with the mistakes that had been made by his staff. In order to get my marble back, I had to pay full price for something that is ruined. Again, I never signed a waiver accepting responsibility, nor was this information disclosed to me.Desired Settlement: Since the incident regarding the marble breaking, I have been notified by the company that this occasionally occurs when working with marble; however, this was not disclosed to me prior to services being rendered. As a result, liability should be on the company to provide compensation when they ruin a product. Therefore, I do not believe that I should have to pay for the poor quality of the services, nor should I have to pay for the repairs to fix it. I am requesting that a full refund of $80 be credited to my account.
