Initial Business Response /* (1000, 12, 2015/02/12) */
Received business response via email on 2/11/15:
To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is in response to the accusation made by [redacted], that damage was caused to her birch trees by the use of climbing spurs.
Arbortech was...

originally called out to remove the dead and dying limbs from the Birch tree caused by the infestation of boring insects and or other associated diseases or pathogen effecting the trees health and condition. The condition appeared to have gone unnoticed and untreated for a long time. Unfortunately by the time we were asked to address the problem the tree was already in a moderate to severe state of decline.
The non-use of climbing spurs on live tree in theory a good practice and Arbortech adheres to the guidelines set fourth by ISA Standards however, there are many circumstances which prevent this from occurring i.e. limb structure too fragile to support rope climbing, lack of adequate or unsafe upper tie in position and hazardous limb structure just to name a few. In the case of the Birch tree, the limb structure was too fragile to safely support rope climbing and the dead tops were unsafe for tie in. Use of climbing spurs under unpractical or hazardous conditions is completely acceptable under ISA standards. Prior to the introduction of the ISA in 1976 "formerly known as the International Shade Tree Conference", and even up until 15-20 years ago, spur climbing was the industry standard. With the introduction of new climbing equipment and techniques over the last 15-20 years "mostly taken from the sport of rock climbing", our industry has made many positive changes with regard to climbing practices and pruning standards.
The idea that the spur marks allow insect to gain access into the tree is a false narrative at best. Boring insect do not need a hole to enter the tree, nature has provided the means to make their own entrance through the bark. In addition the tree has its own ability to seal off and compartmentalize any wound that is made on the tree e.g. limbs being removed with a chain saw, pole pruner, pole saw, hand saw or spur marks .
Arbortech as a courtesy, offered to treat the tree for infestation, fertilize, maintain and monitor the tree for a year and then reassess it at that time. This offer was only as a courtesy so as to alleviate any concerns she may have with regard to the health of the tree. Although Arbortech has not performed a comprehensive evaluation and health assessment, we can only presume that if the tree goes unmonitored it may continue to deteriorate due the previous infestation or disease observed. Such is the case in many instances, tree diseases and infestations go unnoticed and by the time a home owner or lay person notices the problem, the damage has already been done and or may be irreversible.
Thank you,
[redacted]

Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 15, 2015/02/23) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
My Certified Arborist [redacted] came to my house in the last 30 daus to work on my Birch Tree. He used climbing ropes to do so. He noted that even at this time my tree does not have Boring insect. The ISA is also taking this case on since it is a violation of their code of ethics. It has been know for over 100 yrs that using spikes on a live tree causes sever damage that can lead to the loss of a tree. My tree was permantly damaged so this company could save time and not use the proper method. It will never recover from the spur damage. Thes deep holes have also left it open wounds that invite boring insects to attack the tree. The website for the ISA has many articles detailing how to choose a certified arborist so you don't find yourself in this situation. Clearly, they do not follow their own industry's guidelines. This Tree is over 50 years old, therefore it can NOT be replaced and the size allows a true professional to use climbing ropes not spikes to save time and disregard the value of such a tree. It will continue to be expensive to keep this tree in decent shape and in the end the boarer may come in and cause even more damage. But to say it has boarer now is a flat lie.
