When I promise a patient 50% discount, it is considered free work and below operational costsI do this occasionally for people who are struggling in life with a close connection to me, or through certain organizations(I am one of the founding dentists of the free Noor Clinic in San Luis Obispo)But for someone with insurance I will give such a discount on very limited basis, otherwise I have to honor that same discount through the other payer(i.e.,insurance company.) [To assist us in bringing this matter to a close, you must give us a reason why you are rejecting the response. If no reason is received your complaint will be closed] Complaint: 11099810 I am rejecting this response because: My p**blem is with the inflated prices dr g***’s office is belling me. $7700 for a simple p**cedures is a lot of money for me and most Americans. It takes me several months to save this amount. The records I received f**m the collection company shows that dr a**’s office received $2787.05 cash and my Anthom blue c**ss pay $243. A total of $3029.25 is not nothing like Dr A**’s manager said. It is a lot of money for me and most Americans. 1. for the deep cleaning, my wife did this p**cedure for the last 8 years and never pay more than $420. The dentist office always showed a greater appreciation for our business. It is very hard for me to understand how 40 minutes of the hygienists time will cost $968. I checked the prices for the D4341 p**cedure and the average price in san Luis area is $120 per quadrate. Thus, a $480 is a fair price, especially since I was told I will be getting 50% off. 2. for the **ot canal repair. When dr. G [redacted] told me it will cost $1000, he did not say the cost will jump to $2112. I checked the prices for both p**cedure dr g [redacted] reported (D3348,D3333), the average cost for these p**cedures is $668 and$130 or a total of $798. I bayed $1100 cash. When I checked my insurance clime record, I found that I need to bay $220 out of bucket. I was told that the p**cedure dr.g [redacted] performed is not totally covered by my insurance, even though Dr.A [redacted] told me the work is covered before he performed it. So when I called the office, I told them that I will pay the amount my insurance asked me to pay, and to make Dr g [redacted] happy, I will make it 350 to close this account. I never received any bell f**m dr a**’s office tell 10/12/15 and my understanding that when I payed the $500 on 3/7/15 should have b**ught the balance to 0. I had a lot of dental work done on my teeth, almost every single tooth. I never had any p**blem with any dentist before. I always got a written estimate for the work. They will discuss it with me and I sign it before the work was done. In one case I went to get second opinion when the cost was too high. Unfortunately, this p**cess was not followed at dr A**’s office. I have no intention to steel dr g [redacted] money nor to put his good work down. I really got angry when I was told by dr g [redacted] manager that I payed nothing, because $3029.25 worth a lot. Regards, A [redacted]

When I promise a patient 50% discount, it is considered free work and below operational costs. I do this occasionally for people who are struggling in life with a close connection to me, or through certain...

organizations. (I am one of the founding dentists of the free Noor Clinic in San Luis Obispo). But for someone with insurance I will give such a discount on very limited basis, otherwise I have to honor that same discount through the other payer. (i.e.,insurance company.) Mr. J[redacted] has coverage through his employer: they reimburse him part of his dental bills, paying him directly. Therefore I am surprised he is arguing the amount due, when he was actually partially compensated from his employer. Free Exam/X-rays, and the radio advertisement. This advertising campaign is only 3 months old, and is specifically targeting new patients with no insurance.  Mr. Jabaieh has been a patient since 2012, and would not been eligible for this special due to fact that he actually has insurance. I am not obligated to honor the new patient special on a past due account. Finance charges are waivable upon payment in full within 90 days. I am willing to waive them upon payment in full, even though it’s well past 90 days due. Root Canal. This is a retreatment of an old root canal that was done poorly by another dentist prior to Mr. Jabaieh becoming a patient of record with my practice. It was failing, and is not considered a regular root canal. This is one of the most difficult procedures a dentist will do and normally takes between 1-4 visits to complete plus follow up visits. When this tooth was opened, I found a root perforation (the cause for the poor root canal originally) which is really
hard to diagnose prior to removing old work and is considered by the American Dental Association as a separate procedure. Mr. Jabaieh was informed of this, and he should expect charge difference. Instead of being appreciated for saving his tooth (and literally the costs of 2 implants, as his next option would be) I find out he was annoyed at the lengthy treatment.
Cleaning. It is unethical for a dentist to do a regular cleaning where a root planning is needed. This would be like treating a broken hand with aspirin. The law can punish for that and it is considered negligence. Besides, he had the chance to refuse treatment on 2 occasions; why now?
Services not done: He was well aware of it and he knows his account was adjusted for services because we informed him, not as he mentioned.
The final balance is approximately $1300 or so, was for the root repair, and final restoration of the tooth, and 2 deep cleanings. To resolve the matter, my office manager, at my request offered an additional 50% discount and all finance charges adjusted off if balance paid by 10/31/15. If only paid by end of 2015, then full amount would be due. Honestly it was the last resort to solve the problem before sending his account to collections. His response was to call in mid-November, willing pay $350, and insisted we write off the remaining balance. This was not acceptable and my office manager refused. To date I have provided over $7700 in services to this patient and his family (5 members), and have written off over $3300 plus on his account.
The total amount he has reported paid to us is in error.
After all of this, I am not against him and still want this matter to be resolved kindly. I am more than willing to explain his services to him and what was involved, but he needs to understand I can not be pulled away from a patient to discuss his account. A Friday would be a good day for this.
Thank you,
G[redacted], DDS
