In July I purchased a Motorola SBG6580 wireless cable modem and router at Best Buy for $135.99 plus 6% sales tax. I had trouble with port forwarding my internet connection yesterday and contacted my ISP which is Comcast. They ran several diagnostic tests and determined that there was a problem with my modem and not their signal. I then called the Motorola technical service phone number and the tech ran through a few diagnostic tests with no positive results. He then had me select the option to restore my modem to original factory settings. Upon doing this my modem could no longer communicate with Comcast. The Motorola tech said that this is a "known high level problem, that has been happening for several weeks when they've attempted to reset this particular model number to factory settings." He told me that once the modem has been reset, due to a technical problem, Comcast will no longer accept it and that a fix is being looked at but that no time frame could be given other than saying it has already been several weeks and could easily be several more. His resolution was to buy a new modem, but not the same type as I would most likely experience the same problem. Now I have a modem which is completely useless for an undetermined time frame that was suggested could easily be at least several more weeks. I followed up with a customer service member who told me that all they could do is offer a replacement (although they don't even have the same model as mine, it would have to be a less expensive model) which, in their own words, most likely won't work either.I don't understand why the tech service had me reset my modem to factory settings and then fully acknowledging that they are aware that this would render the modem useless and is a known issue. The only resolution offered would be a cheaper model, replacement which they stated would have the same problem.
