In response to the complaint, MrSnotified us the morning of Tuesday, February 7, that his son had grabbed his mother’s chin and said “Focus” and that he learned that behavior from his teacher MrS was asked if there was any redness or bruising on his son’s face He stated that there was notAfter an investigation it was determined on our part that abuse did not occur The teacher did state that yes she had said “Focus” while putting her hands on the sides of another child’s face; however, the teacher stated she never actually touched the child as her hands were just near the sides of his face and the teacher stated she never used this technique with MrS’s child This is a common practice of teachers to get a child to focus on the task at hand MrSdid not agree with our conclusion He stated he was going to call the police I told MrSthat he could call the police; however the best number to call would be the State Licensor as the police would refer this incident to them I even offered the phone number for the State Licensor, but MrSstated he already had it I did offer to switch his child to another classroom; however, I did warn that there would be times, like during outside play that his child would be in contact with the teacher as all the teachers in his son’s age group go out to play at the same time Also our year-old teachers are together in one large room, with the room divided into three rooms with a waist-high gate At any time, the teachers and children can see each other; there is very little privacy per classroomI also called our State Licensor to explain the incident and to get their feedback on the situation The State Licensor stated it sounded like we handled the situation correctly and reiterated that the Focus technique is a common teacher practiceMrSdid not want his son to go into another classroom and the only outcome he wanted was for the teacher to be fired I told him that we would not be firing the teacher as no abuse occurred per our investigation MrSthen stated that his son would not lie and that we were calling his son a liar I tried to explain to MrSthat we do not believe his son was lying but saw the teacher using the Focus technique on another child and this is how he interpreted what he saw and used the analogy that if you tell the same story to five different two-year olds and asked them to repeat the story, you would get five different responsesMrS was very upset, threatened our business and got so angry, I had to ask him to leave three times as he would not listen to anything I had to say It was MrS’s decision to un-enroll his son, not ours We would have gladly worked out a compromise with him as we have many times in the past with previous complaints of his; but unfortunately the only outcome he insisted on was firing the teacher I did talk to other families since MrSand his fiancée work with other family members of ours However I did not mention what happened due to confidentiality and only asked parents if they had any concerns and if so to please feel free to come to me Those parents stated they had no concerns and trusted their children in our care I also talked to the parent of the child who the teacher used the Focus technique on That parent had no concerns and understood what the teacher was doing We have not had children leave our childcare as MrS stated in his complaint for similar issues
