Sequence of events:Rented a U-haul Van from Arts Service at 5 W Main St in Dudley. Purpose: to pick up a Twin bed set from Big Lots (4 Airport Rd, Dudley MA - total miles 1.38 miles from Arts) and deliver to my home (1 Leo Ave, Dudley MA - a total of 3 miles from Big Lots) then back to return the van (a total of 5 miles from 1 Leo ave to Arts Service)I drove a total of 9 miles for which I was charged $5.31 (.59 per mile)I was told that I would be starting out with a full tank - that I should fill it back up upon returning the vehicle or I would be charged $30 of the top. Before returning the vehicle, I stopped at the pump (at Arts Service) to cap the gas tank for what little gas I had used. The serviceman recognized me from renting the van just 1.5 hours and seemed somewhat surprised that I was at the pump. He inserted the pump and to my surprise it took in gas like crazy to the point where - after it ranked up $9.24, he had to stop pumping and said he was trying to save me money. I yelled out...:what is going on, I only went a few miles?". I said I wanted to speak to the person I rented the u-haul from and he said "I don't care what you do as long as you pay for the gas." I paid for the gas then asked to speak to Henry - the person whom I rented the van from; I asked him, how is it possible that I only went 9 miles and am being charged an unconscionable amount when according to him, and the gas gauge, there was a full tank of gas. His response was - did you see a full tank.. I said yes; He said "I did too" - end of story.I suspect that something is very wrong here with the gas gauge - whether faulty or deliberately fixed to read Full when it is NOT; Or there is something unsavory at the gas pump. I have obviously been fleeced and I wonder how many others have experienced the same.Certainly this is something Revdex.com should look into.Desired SettlementI am a fair minded and just individual; I think there is something very wrong here. I would like a refund by way of a gas credit, if a cash refund is not possible.Business Response Contact Name and Title: Henry [redacted] ManagerContact Phone: XXX-XXX-XXXXContact Email: [redacted]@charter.netWhen a uhaul vehicle is returned my job is to check it in and make sure the fuel gauge is at were it was when rented the fuel gauge reads full that is how it is then recievbed in.When Mrs.[redacted] brought the vehicle back she had the attendant fill the truck the fuel gauge may have read full at lets say $4.00 dollars but it will take a few more dollars to top it all the way off I beleave that is what happened to Mrs.[redacted] we in no way intentionly took advantage of Mrs.[redacted]. We all have vehicles and fill them the pump will stop and we usually top it off and fit a few more dollars in such as in her case.Consumer Response (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)The Van took in 3.3 gallons worth of gas before the attendant pulled it out in an effort to "save me money" ...to the tune of over $9.24. I am a pathetically honest person and knew I had used a little gas to go just 10 miles. Before a vehicle is rented out they should "cap the gas". There is no telling how much more gas it would have taken had the attendant not stopped pumping. Imagine if this happens every time someone rents a van...the consumer has no way of knowing that the company is charging them for extra gas. I would like to be reimbursed for the gas that I did not use - I drove 10 miles and had to pay for 3.30 gallons of gas. THIS IS NOT RIGHT...and I suppose I was wrong - guilty of being a pathetically honest person. Final Consumer Response Owner (Henry) of business contacted me. Owner apologized for the sequence of events and a fair and just reimbursement was agreed upon by owner and myself. This complaint has been resolved, no issues exists. Thank you for your intervention and assistance.
