valve was turned off and ready for the supplier or installer of the pool heater to do their testing and start up. Besides the fact that we did not supply or install the heater, we do not light them for several reasons. The first being that the heater requires a specific flow rate going across the heat exchanger. If the flow rate is not being met, the heat exchanger will crack. We're not a pool supply company nor do we posess the equipment to test any type of flow rate. Had we taken it upon ourselves to light the pool heater and the flow rate was not being met resulting in the heat exchanger being cracked, we would have been held responsible and would have needed to buy a new one and replace it. Secondly, in the over 40 years I've been in business, either the manufacturer's representative or pool heater installer has done the start up on any pool equipment. Both days I was there, she was not. Nor, did anyone answer the door so I sent my son over to collect payment when we knew someone would be home. Being a plumber, we are trained on equipment we supply and install. Pool heaters are not sold at a plumbing supply house. Therefore, we are not properly trained to install, service, or start up. Her service call from the pool company could have been avoided if she had called them to start up the heater they installed. This is no different than a furnace. We are not HVAC contractors and our responsibility for the gas line ends at the gas valve. We don't light the furnace. Its up to the HVAC contractor to perform the furnace start up.
