Review: Wow what a great little scam they got going on. You rent a car from [redacted] in [redacted] NY airport for a family reunion in [redacted] Mn. They tell you about the transponder on the windshield that you can use for toll roads. Its a 4$ fee per day on top of the tolls. We drive across half the country paying cash at every toll. Do we get receipts?... no ...who does? Lesson learned. We joke about how the tolls are emptying my wallet before we even get to our destination. You pay the cash toll...you get a green light or the barricade lets you pass; and you go on your way. I didn't think to get a receipt. Same thing on the return. You pay the cash...you joke about the fact that your wallet is now got cobwebs from all the tolls draining you...but it was a good trip. Then the real fun begins. A few days after you get home from your family vacation; you check your online credit card statement to make sure that you were not over charged at hotels or restaurants or gas stations etc. Then you see it. What is this? A 20.40$ charge from Plate pass [redacted].com? I don't understand? We never even opened the little transponder thing on the windshield? Strange? I call the 1-877 number... enter my [redacted] reservation # ?? Weird? I rented from [redacted]. I don't have a contract # from [redacted]. So I call [redacted] to get to the bottom of this. The [redacted] rep was confused as well. "No sir...no charges from etolls.com....You never used that service." OK... well what now? I call my credit card company fraud division. After explaining the situation he gets a representative from Plate Pass on a three way call to explain the situation. Seems as though this company scans your license plate as you go through the toll booths. If you go through a toll booth that accepts ezpass or the like and also accepts cash payment its going to run your plate and bill you regardless if you payed cash and get a green light to travel on. Apparently you also have to save your receipt to prove that you payed cash. Are there not cameras on each lane recording the movement of every vehicle through those toll booths? So basically... you rent a car with your credit card.... you travel through a toll booth and pay cash... they scan you and bill you again because they can...they have your information...you call to dispute... and they say prove it!. You can't because you didn't save the cash receipts...no one will do anything not even the credit card company....blah blah blah.... just bend over and take it. They are bringing new life to the old term "Highway Robbery". It is a hell of a scam....good job! So beware fellow happy family travelers... there will be an extra charge when you return if you rent a car with a credit card; and you will have no power to dispute if you don't keep your toll booth receipts. You are guilty and will be charged regardless...you will pay twice! So learn like I did. Take the front plate off the car...take the transponder off the windshield and leave it at the rental counter...scrape off any identifying bar codes from the windshield or windows... pay cash at your toll booths if you want... and enjoy your trip with your family. If not....be prepared to get bent over when you get home. Happy Travels!Desired Settlement: It would be nice to get my $20.40 back. Not holding my breath. This is a scam run by ss. I am already proven guilty in their eyes. I can't prove to them that I payed cash, even though I was allowed to proceed with a green light. They have my information. I will just bend over and get robbed like a obedient little unsuspecting traveler. But it would still be nice to not have to get double charged for a toll road.

Review: Rented from Advantage car rental which uses the deceptive PlatePass electronic toll payment system. Apparently went through a $1 toll and was charged an additional $24.75 in "administration fees.

According to my rental agreenent the use of PlatePass is optional "you will be required to use PlatePass, or else you will incur a toll violation".

I explained that I did not authorize the use of PlatePass and would like to "incur the toll violation" and resolve this issue without PlatePass.

They declined and stated that it is mandatory in the state of Florida. I do not wish to support this deceptive company and its practices.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution would be satisfactory to me. I will wait until for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved.

Regards,

This "service" is a vehicle by rental companies to squeeze money out of something the have no business in. They charge the cash toll while pocketing the difference from the etoll states like NJ charge. This is on top of their ridiculous "daily fee" that is charged even on days it is not used. This company should no longer be allowed to stay in business operating the way it does.

Review: I rented a vehicle from [redacted] in April for travel to Florida. I recently received a charge from PlatePass in the amount of $26.05. I called them and they stated that I received a toll while I was in Florida in an area that does not have toll booths, but instead scans license plate numbers and bills the driver (so I am told by the Company's employee). The toll was for $1.30. I was charged this in addition to a $24.75 administrative fee. I was never told anything about these administrative charges by the [redacted] employee. PlatePass told me there is no way the [redacted] member would have known that I was traveling to Miami, so he would not have told me about it. However, the [redacted] employee specifically asked me where I was traveling and I told him Miami. He never mentioned this. The PlatePass employee then said, the [redacted] employee probably did not know about the tolls and policies concerning PlatePass but it is in the [redacted] agreement. I asked him if the [redacted] employee does not even know about it, how is the consumer suppose to know? He stated I should have read the extremely long policy agreement at the time of rental. I was never told of any of this by either company. This should have been brought to my attention. I would have gone a different route during my travel to avoid these charges if I have known about it. The toll itself is only $1.30. Then an additional $24.75 in administrative charges. I have to pay $24.75 just to cover a $1.30 toll?! This is definitely something that should be pointed out to consumers at the time of the rental. I should not have to read a huge rental agreement just to be sure that there are not some hidden charges that I will have to pay for later. This is completely ridiculous. I could have stayed in the fast pass lane the whole time and not take away time to stop at every toll booth to pay cash and at least make the most out of these administrative charges. However, I was not told about any of this. I do not see how it is possible to stiff a consumer with charges for policies that even the company's own employees are not aware of.Desired Settlement: I think the business should refund the administrative charges in the amount of $24.75. In addition, every employee of every car rental company that conducts business with PlatePass should be fully knowledgeable about their own policies and practices and should educate the consumer about them.

Review: I received erroneous charges relating to my Plate Pass rental stating that my Plate Pass tagged registered several transactions throughout the time that I had rented the car. Upon reviewing the charges I noticed that I should not be responsible/liable for the charges as I had not crossed the bridges at those times. Upon requesting for further evidence (Pictures of the license plate from the toll charges) and they refused to provide me with further evidence. Furthermore, they told me that I had to find a way to obtain the pictures from the toll authority and also provide evidence that I was not in the area at the time of the charges. A simple solution would be obtaining the pictures to assure that the car matches the transponder. Unfortunately you are unable to obtain said pictures from the transit authority as a user. Only the company that receives the notification can do so (in this case Plate Pass is the company that received the notification).Desired Settlement: I would like for the bill to be adjusted to $0 as I did not incur those charges with my rental vehicle.

Review: I rented a vehicle from [redacted] in [redacted] CAN. HERTZ RESERVATION [redacted], on Oct 15, 2013. I errantly received a parking ticket during that rental that was subsequently dismissed on Nov 19, 2013. Viloation Number: [redacted]. [redacted] parking authority.

I sent ATS multiple emails, forwarded the [redacted] dismissal email, and called them as well as [redacted] "customer service" on several occasions. They continue to send me demand letters and will no longer rent to me. It's no surprise that I was never considering a future rental with them (they are not only incompetent, they are just stupid).

Without my approval they attempted to charge my credit card $336 for the ticket. [redacted] also attempted to charge me an additional $88. This is criminal!Desired Settlement: I want them to clear my account of this incident, apologize for there error and never contact me again (remove me from all [redacted] programs).

Business

Response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting us regarding your concern. It is our goal to provide you with excellent customer service and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

The invoice of $88 for parking citation number [redacted] was adjusted in full on 12/20/13. This account now shows a balance due of $0.

The second charge of $356.50 pertains to a red light camera infraction, citation number [redacted], issued by the Ontario Justice Court on 10/17/13. This citation was paid by ATS to prevent any action taken against the rental vehicle, such as booting/towing or registration suspension. ATS contacted the issuing authority on 2/14/14 and was informed that the violation was not dismissed. If you feel this is an error, please send in proof of the dismissal and the charge will be adjusted in full.

Again, thank you for contacting us and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Review: This company is contracted by various rental agencies to process toll payments for rental vehicles based on camera surveillance of license plates. If an individual renting a vehicle does not pay a toll at a booth or through a pre- or post-paid system, ATS (or one of its subsidiaries like PlatePass) will bill the renter via the credit card filed for incidentals with the rental agency. They will bill for the amount of the tolls as well as fees for using their billing service. What makes their billing/collection practices unethical and predatory is that they bill for the entire duration that a rental vehicle is rented as opposed to one time or on the days when a vehicle was driving on roads, bridges, causeways, etc. with tolls. For example, if an individual rented a car for a week, but only drove on a road with a single toll one day out of that week, ATS would still bill them a daily fee for the entire week the vehicle is rented. I am of course not averse to paying processing fees or using a service similar to what ATS provides, but the practice of billing customers daily for the entire duration a vehicle is rented regardless of how many tolls for which the renter is responsible is unethical at best and predatory at worst. ATS should also be more up front about their daily fees and charges as they are (purposefully) obscured from customers during the rental agreement process.Desired Settlement: A refund for the amount of the days when I did not use or authorize use of their service and letter of apology.

Review: After a week long car rental in Tampa, Florida with Hertz, I was charged $25.89 on my credit card a few weeks later, when I received my cc statement. The charge was from PlatePass. Platepass said that I ran a toll at 10:13pm in Miami. I called and explained that I was not even driving the car at 10:15pm and was nowhere near Miami. They said that I needed to provide receipts to prove that I was somewhere else on that day and time. I requested for them to remove the charge, but they would not. They wanted to remove $19.80, but leave me with a $6.09 charge. I requested to see a picture of my rental car's license plate which they were willing to get at a cost and that they would not be able to remove any charges if the picture matched my rental car. I requested the picture. After searching the web this seems to be a common fraudulent way for Platepass to generate revenue which has been going on for many years. How many people don’t notice the charge on their cc bill? How many will accept the credit of $19.80 and pay them the $6.09?Desired Settlement: Settlement: Refund the incorrect charges immediately and put procedures in place to prevent these charges in the first place. This is a fraudulent way for you to make money from all the people who don’t spend the time to look into this. You know that that is a dishonest and immoral way to make money!

Review: I have sent my billing complaint three separate times to this business: once each on 1/21/2015, 2/2/2015, and today, 2/10/2015. Each time, I have emailed three separate email addresses listed on their website. I have received no responses back and no refund yet, and it has been 14 business days (20 calendar days) since my first request.

I wrote to request a refund of $14.85, which represented 3 days of administrative fees. I rented a car from [redacted] in [redacted], FL, from the [redacted], on December 4, 2014. I am a [redacted] Gold Member, and when I was leaving the [redacted] property in the rental car, the [redacted] gate attendant asked me if I'd like to use the Plate Pass in the car. I had never used Plate Pass before, so I asked her how much it would cost to use it. She said it would be a one-time fee of $4.95 if I chose to use it. While travelling in Florida, I decided to use the Plate Pass when going through the tolls. I expected to be charged the one-time fee of $4.95. On the Plate Pass invoice detail, I was charged an administrative fee of $4.95 PER DAY (for 4 days, a total of $19.80). This was the first time I had ever seen or heard of a per-day charge. The [redacted] gate attendant very clearly told me it was a one-time fee of $4.95. My boyfriend was with me in the rental car at the time of leaving the [redacted] lot, and he was a witness to her statement that it was a one-time fee of $4.95. I definitely would not have used the Plate Pass if I had known it was a per-day charge, as that would not be cost efficient. I think I should be refunded the remaining $14.85 because I was misinformed that it was a one-time fee of $4.95 by a [redacted] employee.Desired Settlement: I should be refunded $14.85 because I was misinformed about the per-day charge by the [redacted] lot/gate attendant, who led me to believe it was a one-time charge. Plate Pass and [redacted] should work together to better educate [redacted] employees and gate attendants on the fees to use Plate Pass so that customers are not misinformed.

Review: I rented a car from Hertz at [redacted]t. A few weeks later I noticed a plate pass toll charge. Firstly, Hertz never mentioned nor explained one thing to me about the use of Plate Pass-option to use or not use it. I paid cash for each and every toll but am being charged a $28 charge which none of the tolls added up to that amount. I did not willingly use this Plate Pass and want my account fully refunded.Desired Settlement: Credit of $28.05 to my checking account.

Review: I rented a car and used my own (daughter's) EZ pass for all tolls. How or why this company can charge me for a service that I did not have or use.

This company is a scam...this is the third time that have tried to slide charges in when I have paid either in cash for all of my tolls or used an EZ pass.Desired Settlement: Credit my credit card.

Review: I rented a car from [redacted] in December while traveling to [redacted], as i've done many times before. During the rental process, I was never informed about the 3rd party supplier - Platepass, nor did I ask for one in my vehicle. On January 6th, I received a charge on my account for the use of Platepass. I called both [redacted] and Plate Pass and informed them that no one had made me aware of PlatePass charges being separate from my [redacted] bill, as I've rented from [redacted] 100 times before. On 18.70 in tolls they charged an additional 24.75 administrative fee!! This administrative fee is completely unethical and absurd, I'm astonished this company has a high rating with the [redacted]. Furthermore, at no time did I EVER authorize this company to use my credit card. My credit card information was shared ONLY with [redacted]. [redacted] did NOT inform me at any time about the Platepass, the possible charges and sharing of my credit card information. This is extremely concerning, especially the part about [redacted] sharing my credit card number with a third party without informing me.Desired Settlement: Refund the $24.75 administrative fee that was never explained or mentioned at [redacted]

Review: I rented a car for almost 2 months from [redacted] In the rental car is a PlatePass provided by this ATS Processing, I was able to use my EZ-pass to pay for the tolls as I traveled for work around the [redacted] and farther upstate [redacted]

After I turned in my rental I received a bill in the mail from PlatePass saying I owed a balance of $84.19 for tolls and fees incurred during my rental. Well, I asked for the actual invoice to check it next to my EZ-Pass history to see if I was being double charged for tolls. When they sent me the invoice the amount due had skyrocketed to $556.14.

When I looked at the tolls that were registered on that invoice I was extremely disturbed to see that the invoice was completely made up. Like I said earlier I work upstate and in the [redacted] and [redacted] County. THe tolls on the invoice show a history of someone who commutes into the city everyday, goes over the GWB early in the morning and sometimes goes through the [redacted] Tunnel...and many times doing this multiple times throughout a day. THe charges are not just excessive but they are completely fabricated.

H[redacted] and PlatePass are in cahoots on this scam and have been sued in the past for allegations similar to mine with some differences and many more complaints about the outrageous fees associated with using the PLate, the case was settled in 2013 for 11 Million dollars. Obviously they did not learn their lesson from before and are now doing outrageous things with this PlatePass scam. They are out and out stealing from people and only giving back the money if you scream loud enough and fight them for it. I do not go into the city on a regular basis, and if I do it is not early in the morning with the commuting traffic. I NEVER use the [redacted] Tunnel, the midtown tunnel, or am down in the [redacted] Airport area as is suggested by the tolls on the invoice. There are tolls from the [redacted] Bridge which I haven't been within 200 miles of in a year.Desired Settlement: THis is obviously a scam....just a simple google search will show you hundreds of complaints against this company with blatant disregard for rules and laws. They cheat and go as far as they can until the customer says stop. They have no regard for consumers at all and I want them to be shut down eventually because they have been sued yet they continue to defraud and attempt to rip their customers off. Obviously I also want my bill adjusted to show I owe them nothing and for them to have no further contact with me unless they want to make amends and give me restitution money.

Review: I rented a car from the [redacted] location in Greensboro, NC, from October 17, 2013 to October 20, 2013. In that time I never came across any toll booths, nor did I agree to this service when I picked up my car. Upon checking my credit card statement I saw a charge of $16.60 for tolls. I called Platepass on Tuesday October 29, 2013 at 7:30 pm EST. Their office hours online say that they are open from 9:00 am -8:00 pm EST Monday through Friday, but when I called the office was closed. I called again on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at 9:20 am EST. I was told by a representative that the tolls were from Virginia. In no way was I ever in Virginia when I rented my car. I had to provide my hotel bill in order to confirm I was never in the location of these tolls. The representative didn't even provide me with the dates of these tolls.

I am very disturbed by this company’s lack of integrity, and ability to process its bills correctly. I should have never been charged in the first place.Desired Settlement: I would like to be refunded the $16.60 I was charge and also compensated for their error, and unauthorized charge.

Review: I rented a car from Hertz after a car accident. After I returned the car Platepass.com charged me $82.55 for tolls even though I never took the car on a tollway or expressway. When I called to have the charge reversed they said that I have to prove to them that I was NOT in the area the tolls took place at the times they say. I do not know how to prove that I was not someplace. They said I need bank statements proving where I was.Desired Settlement: I want them to have to prove that the car I rented was the one going through the tolls. Regards,

Don't know if this complaint should be aimed at PLATEPASS, but as with previous reviews, I was also charged for tolls which I paid in cash while in Florida. Perhaps the fault lies here with the rental compamy, Advantage Rental, as I specifically asked the agent if there was a transponder available or if I would need to pay cash? I was told, no transponder, and on top of that, I even asked her if she had change and was told there were manned lanes to take bills. Perhaps PLATEPASS should have Advantage re-train their reps so the bad reviews aren't put on them.

Review: $53.10 was deducted from my checking account on 7/30/13 for tolls in the New York area between 7/13 and 7/20 of 2013. I was not in the area with my rental car at that time. I had flown into Rhode Island and stayed in Cape Cod that week. In fact my rental car did not have Plate Pass in it at all.

I called on 7/30 to discuss the charges and I was told that Plate Pass would reach out to the rental car company to verify the mileage to determine if it would be possible for me to have driven that distance. I was told it would take about 7 - 10 business days to be researched and then a refund would be issued.

When I called to follow up after 10 days, I was told it was still being researched.

When I called again on August 30th, I was told that the notes in the system said the company was waiting for me to provide proof that I had not been in New York! The rep apologized for the miscommunication. I emailed my flight itinerary and my bank statements to [redacted] to show that I was in the Cape Cod area during July 13 - July 20. The rep told me it would take about a week to process the refund.

I called again on September 10 (over a week since the proof was sent) and was told that nothing had been processed! I asked to speak to a supervisor. I was told that all the managers were busy, but someone would call in in 24-48 hours.

It has been almost a month and a half since the original charge and Plate Pass has been less than helpful in returning my money in their promised timelines.Desired Settlement: I would like the $53.10 refunded to my credit card immediately!

We spent about 45 minutes in the Capital Building, couldn't get on the last tour, and headed back to our vehicle. There was no parking ticket on the vehicle, and the parking meter still showed paid time on it. In January of 2015, I received a charge to my credit card for $75 and a letter to our home shortly after this claiming that there was an unpaid ticket for $25 that turned into $50 because it was unpaid, and ATS Processing Services tacked on a $25 "convenience fee" for paying the ticket all while waiting over 2 months before contacting us about the issue. I contacted them, disputed the claim, and forwarded a copy of my credit card statement showing that I paid for parking on the very day that the ticket was apparently issued. I was given the run-around multiple times as I continued to call to try to follow up on this. On my last follow up, it was recommended that I contact the DMV in DC to see if I could get this resolved. I did so, and was told by the DMV that we indeed had a case, but due to ATS paying the fine, they assumed guilt, hence there was no way the DMV was going to refund our money for the ticket even though I had proof that we paid for parking. Along the way, my credit card company credited me $40 of what they paid ATS/[redacted] and left $35 with them (I am still unclear as to why this happened). I called my bank and they verified that the $35 was processed and accepted by the financial institution that ATS uses, ATS representatives continued to deny that the $35 ever made it to them which disgusted me. I then found out that during this entire process, ATS decided to send our account to a collections agency! Rather than have them ruin my stellar credit, I was forced to pay for something I should never have had to pay for which now became $90 due to them sending it to collections plus the $35 I referenced above that my bank shows they accepted for a total out of pocket of $125. I have tried in good faith to settle this with ATS to no avail, this has to be one of the most unethical companies I have ever dealt with that employs some of the rudest customer service agents on the planet. I am unclear as to how the Revdex.com allows them to maintain an A+ rating.Desired Settlement: I would like ATS to refund me the $125 in total that I have paid out of pocket for an expense that we should never have incurred. Had they contacted me in time, I could have provided the statements that showed that we paid for parking and this would have all been a non-issue. I would also like a letter from them proving that the case is closed with them and the collections agency with no further actions being taken against us. I am more than happy to never use [redacted] or any of their sister companies for our rental needs.

Review: I rented a car from [redacted] Rental Car May 1st thru May 4th and I received a parking ticket. [redacted] sent me a bill for a $30.00 handling fee for the parking ticket which they did not even pay. I called on 7-21-15 to ask why the handling fee was so high and I was told "You signed a contract and it is stated in there". It seems like this is a rental car scam and they do not even pay the ticket. This is unacceptable.Desired Settlement: I would like the $30.00 handling fee credited back to my credit card that they are threatening to charge.

Response:

Dear [redacted], Thank you for contacting us regarding your concern as it is our goal to provide you with excellent customer service. When a violation is issued from the [redacted] Judicial Court you have 10 days to pay the violation. If that violation is not paid within that time frame, a notice will be sent to the owner of the vehicle. When we received that notice we were responsible for providing the issuing authority with your information to transfer the violation from Avis’ name into your name. Once that process is done [redacted] Judicial Court will mail out their notice and provide you with a due date to pay. As a one-time courtesy, we have adjusted the $30 administrative fee to reflect a zero balance. It is our hope that you find this matter resolved. For additional information, you may contact us by email, phone, or visit our website, www.avisrentalfine.com. You will need your Rental Agreement number: [redacted] and last name: [redacted], to access the information online. Best Regards, ATS Processing Services
