On February 6, 2017 , Mr. [redacted] brought his car to the shop because his check engine light was on and he was noticing an engine noise. We scanned and tested the car and found that there were fault codes and problems with the car. We found the engine oil very low and the oil change was far past due....
We checked and found valve timing off and noise from the timing change area on the engine. We inspected the lower timing change tensioner which was accessible fro the outside of the engine and found OK. We suggested removal of the timing covers to inspect the timing chain and related parts and Mr. [redacted] gave us the approval to do so. Upon removal of the timing covers we found broken chain guides which we replaced with new chains and adjusted. We cleaned debris from internal engine as best as possible without complete disassembly. We reinstalled all covers with new gaskets ad seals. Please note recommended services on Work order 76514. Car had engine oil leaks, multiple stored codes in in the computer, brake work needed and possible other internal engine problems. See work order # 76. On February 10, 2017 Mr. [redacted] brought his car back to the shop because his engine oil light was on, the car ran rough at idle, and he was hearing a rubbing noise. The rubbing was because his breaks were worn out, we test drove the car could not tnot verify a rough idle but we scan tested and found a stored code of POO11. Found engine oil level to be ok. We recommended services (see work order 78154) which he declined. In September of 2017, Mr. [redacted] was still having issues with his car and brought his car to another shop. The following was found at the other shop: "We found that the timing is off, the timing covers need to be removed and the timing gears/vanos automatic adjuster gears replaced. They will need to be adjusted and the timing makes adjusted correctly.” They suggested the following: “if we were to do the job we would prefer to remove the engine, replace the rear main seal, replace the oil pan gasket, remove the cylinder heads, go through the cvalves and verify that they are fine ,replace all related seals, remove the timing covers, remove the timing chains, replace the variable timing gears etc. I would guess that we would be somewhere in the range of $12,900. And if we were to just do the variable valve timing hears it would be around $6,500.” Based on the other shops recommendation, we offered to refund Mr. Salder our labor charges $3,000 for him to have the other shop make the repair or we would pick up the vehicle and we would recheck valve timing and replace the vanos gears free of charge. .He elected to have us pick up his vehicle and we performed the work per repair order 78154. The total cost of parts and labor was $3,856.65 which he was not charged for. In addition to the vanos gears replacement, we also repaired a misfire by replacing the #6 cylinder coil and scan tested finding stored codes per work order 78154 informing him of additional work that needed to be done. One month after the work was completed, he emailed requesting a $2500 refund stating he was dissatisfied. Below was my response to him: Theo, As stated in the emails below, we agreed to refund your labor costs OR reinspect the valve timing and correct as needed. You opted for us to reinspect and correct as needed (as opposed to a cash refund). We did as you asked at a considerable cost to us. We considered this matter to be closed.
