Austin's Construction and Design Reviews (%countItem)

Austin's Construction remodeled our bathroom and kitchen. We have a number of problems with their work that need to be repaired.
Austin's Construction remodeled our bathroom and kitchen starting in February 2019. They completed their work in May 2019. Starting in June, I contacted them about a bathroom electrical outlet that didn't work. They said they would fix it but never did. I contacted them five more times over the Summer but they never actually came to the house to fix the issue.

Starting in December 2019, I contacted them five times regarding other issues we are having with their work. On January 21, they finally came to look at the issues and agreed to fix many of them. They said they would begin fixing them during the week of January 27, but they didn't show up and haven't contacted us since.

Here are a list of the items that need to be repaired:
Bathroom:
1. Major grout issues with tile floor.
2. Electrical outlet needs to be repaired.
3. Paint issues around sky light.
4. Cracks in shower grout.
5. Shower drainage issue.

Kitchen:
1. Major grout issues with tile floor.
2. Ceiling paint issues.
3. Floor tile isn't level in some spots.

Living Room:
1. Issues w/ paint job.

There are other cleanup issues that need to be addressed. I explained these in a list sent to Austin's Construction.

Desired Outcome

I have been contacting them since June 2019 regarding different problems we are seeing but they simply won't come to the house and fix them. I just want them to fix these issues as soon as possible OR provide a refund.

Contact Name and Title: *** Owner
Contact Phone: XXXXXXXXXX
Contact Email: ***@gmail.com
*** contacted via text on June 4th 2019 regarding a outlet in the bathroom not working. At that time I was attending my grandfathers funeral. He contacted me again on the 10th of June and I was out of town at Fort Knot with the Army. I had passed the info to my electrician. *** then contacted me on Dec.28.2019 stating they were having grout trouble in the kitchen and master bath. After that I had came down with the flu and was out of work for about a week, and then left town for 5 days for drill with the army. I met with *** on 21st of Jan.2020 he went on to tell me that he wanted the kitchen floor taken back up and redone. I had already done that once during the job, and relaid the flooring. Once I relaid the flooring they were happy with it. *** choose a 1/16" grout line for his kitchen for and bath room floor, which is very small grout line. With that being said it is common for some grout to come out. When I went and spoke with *** I saw the missing grout and it would have been a simple fix. He went on to say he wanted the whole floor regrouted even places that were not missing.

Regarding the paint issues around the skylight in the bathroom. He had told me before we painted the ceiling that he had an issue with it leaking but had another company fix it. So Therefor I applied "Kilz" to the water stain and painted over it. When the Job was finished the water damaged paint spot was fixed correctly and showed no sign of needing more attention. I stated to *** that if the water spot has came back through then the skylight could possibly be leaking again. He did not like that response and said "It has been fixed". Skylights are known for leaks.

Regarding the shower drain, I had explained to *** before completion that I would recommend getting a squeegee just incase there were standing water on the shower floor. *** did not mention it again until DEC.28.2019.

Regarding the Kitchen ceiling paint issue. The kitchen had drywall tape damage, so we took it out and replaced it. I'm not sure why the tape has cracked again, but I stated I would be willing to fix and paint that no problem.
Regarding the living room paint issues. There where many drywall screw pops in the ceiling and damage in the joints. This room is also on a vaulted ceiling(could be the reason for the drywall damage). I explained to *** that I would fix the paint issue and re-do the drywall spots but he might have a bigger issue on his hands if they pop through again. Could be a structural issue. All we did in the living room was paint the walls and ceilings.

After we met *** told me he would send me the grout colors for the kitchen and bathroom. I did not hear from him for a month until we ran in to each other at a local cafe on March.4.2020. I explained to him that I was waiting to hear back from him on the colors. Also explained to him that I had drill with the Army that weekend and would be in contact the week I got back.

*** did not express any of these matters to me at the completion of the job, my team and I went above and beyond to please them. I relaid the kitchen for free of charge and bought all materials, I also had to re-do a glass tile shower wall in the shower because *** bought the materials and insisted on me using the "glass tile" mortar HE bought! I ended up spending $1,100 in materials alone to fix that, and $1,500 on the kitchen floor! I will fix the missing grout places, and paint issues. I do not feel I have to replace the entire floor. I completed there extensive punch list and they paid me out on the job, they said everything was good! Just doesn't make sense to me if they weren't happy with the kitchen flooring, or any of the work completed then they should have said something then; not on DEC.28.2019! 7 months after it was completed. If you have any questions please give me a call. I hope to get this bad review taken off my account because simply it is wrong!

Customer Response • Mar 19, 2020

's response doesn't list all of the text messages that I sent to him asking him to address problems we are having with his work. Here is the list:
- June 4 - I texted *** asking him to fix an electrical outlet. He had just installed the outlet a few weeks before. He responded that his grandfather had passed. I responded "Sorry about that ***".
- June 10 - I texted *** again about the electrical outlet. He responded saying that he was at training but would try to send one of his guys over to my house.
- June 24 - I texted *** again about the electrical outlet. He responded that he was just getting back to work.
- July 23 - I texted *** again about the electrical outlet. He responded saying that he thought his electrician was going to check on it.
- Aug. 7 - I texted *** again about the electrical outlet. No response from ***.
- Aug. 22 - I texted *** again about the electrical outlet. He responded "Yes sir".
- Dec. 28 - I texted *** about the grout coming out of the tile floors. He responded saying "I can come by this week and fix it".
- Jan. 5 - I texted *** asking if he could come to the house and look at a number of issues we are having . He responded saying he could "come over this week".
- Jan. 14 - I texted *** and asked again if he could come over and look at the problems. He responded saying he had been at drill.
- Jan. 21 - I texted *** and reminded him that we were having problems with his work. I told him that we needed to discuss these issues. I also mentioned that I was going to file a claim with the Revdex.com. He responded saying he would come by. He did come by later that day.

I sent all of these text messages and I still don't have any of these items fixed, not even the electrical outlet. No one from his company came to my house until Jan. 21. I like ***, but its very frustrating to pay someone to do a job, then have problems with their work and they won't come by and look at the problems.

After we met on Jan. 21, I told *** I would send him a list of the work items along with the floor grout color. I sent him the work item list on Jan. 27. I thought *** would start work on the items soon after that. I didn't talk to him again until March 4 when I ran into him at a local cafe (like he said). At the cafe, he mentioned that he was waiting for me to send him the floor grout color. I asked him to focus on the other issues on the list and not worry about the floor grout at that point. I haven't heard from him since then.

Regarding ***'s response:
- *** mentions that I wanted the whole Kitchen floor re-grouted. There are a number of grout issues on the kitchen floor that need repair. The problem isn't just in one area of the floor.

- Regarding the skylight in the bathroom, we see one area around the light that has turned brown and a number of areas where the paint is cracking. Also in the bathroom, there are a number of spots on the ceiling where they got grey paint from the walls onto the white ceiling. When *** and I discussed these grey paint issues, he mentioned that he would fix them.

- The shower drainage issue is a pretty big problem. After they completed their work, we started using a squeegee on the floor after taking a shower (this is a hassle). Even after using the squeegee, the grout is starting to become discolored where the water puddles. This is becoming a bigger issue than we initially thought. When *** came by the house on Jan. 21, I asked him to think about a possible solution. When we contracted with *** to install a shower, we assumed that the water would flow to the drain, not puddle in the middle of the shower.

- *** mentions that he had to re-tile the bathroom after the wrong mortar was used. He makes it sound as if I "insisted" on him using the wrong mortar on the tile. I never "insisted" they use the wrong mortar. I bought the mortar that I assumed went with the tile. *** lays tile for a living. He is a tile expert. If he knew the mortar was wrong, I don't know why he used it. He never mentioned to me that the mortar was wrong until the tile fell off the wall. I will say that *** dealt with this particular problem in a professional manner. He re-tiled the wall at his own expense.

- Regarding the living room paint issues, I don't know why the cracks in the ceiling have developed. He did mention that the room may need a vent on the roof. I can ask another contractor to look into this. But while looking at the ceiling cracks, *** and I noticed a portion of the ceiling that wasn't painted right. It looks completely inconsistent.

- When I met with *** on Jan. 21, I asked why the kitchen floor tile has so many problems. installed the floor twice and it still has grout issues as well as being uneven in many places. He said that he could fix the grout issues, but he didn't know why the tile is uneven. I said that I was thinking about having a flooring company examine the floor to see if they could give advice on how to fix it. I have since contacted a flooring company. They said that they could reinstall the floor and the tiles will be even. We contracted with this company to replace the kitchen and bathroom floors. Since we are having this company replace the floors that *** installed, *** doesn't need to fix the floor grout in the kitchen and bathroom. This is very expensive for us to do, but the floors look bad.

*** says that when he completed the job, we didn't mention the issues listed in this complaint. Here is a recap of the issues and when they were discovered:
- The grout in the tile floors started cracking and coming out after they finished the job.
- Regarding the puddles of water in the shower floor, *** said that we needed to get a squeegee. But after they finished their work, the grout started to become discolored where the puddling occurs.
- Regarding the cracks in ceiling paint in the living room, I believe the cracks occurred a few months after *** finished his work.
- Regarding the inconsistent paint areas in the living room, we didn't notice this until recently.
- Regarding the cracks in the shower grout, I believe those occurred after *** finished the job.
- The electrical outlet stopped working a few weeks after they finished the job.
- Regarding the paint issues with the skylight, the brown spot appeared after they finished the job. Also, I didn't notice the cracks around the light until after they finished the job.
- The paint issue in the kitchen didn't look great when they finished the job, but it seems to have gotten worse.
- The uneven floor tiles were uneven before they finished the job. We paid them knowing that the floor didn't look right. We probably should have held back payment based on this issue.

Based on the work that I outlined in my initial complaint, I believe this is where we stand:

Bathroom:
1. Major grout issues with tile floor. - A floor company will be replacing the tile floor.
2. Electrical outlet needs to be repaired. - *** mentioned he would fix this. Is this still accurate?
3. Paint issues around sky light. - We haven't seen this light leak in years. If *** is sure they treated the whole area with Kilz, then we will fix this ourselves. The one area that's turning brown is not the only area around the skylight where there are problems. Some areas have begun to crack since *** patched / painted it. Will *** be able to fix these?
4. Cracks in shower grout. - *** mentioned he would fix this. Is this still accurate?
5. Shower drainage issue. - As mentioned above, there is discoloration of the grout in the area of the water puddles. Is there any other way to fix this other than tearing up the shower floor and starting over?

Kitchen:
1. Major grout issues with tile floor. - A floor company will be replacing the tile floor.
2. Ceiling paint issues. - *** mentioned he would fix this. Is this still accurate?
3. Floor tile isn't level in some spots. - A floor company will be replacing the tile floor.

Living Room:
1. Issues with paint job. - If the cracks are occurring because we need a roof vent, we'll fix the cracks ourselves. But the inconsistent paint job needs to be fixed. Is this something *** will fix?

There are other cleanup issues that need to be addressed. I explained these in a list sent to Austin's Construction. *** mentioned he would take care of this. Is this still accurate?

If needed, I'll be glad to post pictures for any of the problems listed.

We would like to get this settled. I know that *** has other work going on and has military obligations as well. Assuming *** agrees with the work listed, when can we sche
