I wrote the following letter after we left our apartment.
To whom it may concern:
I would like to express our great disappointment in this apartment complex. It was a great deal at first. However, our needs as tenants were pushed aside time and time again. The day after we moved in, the AC unit went out. It took nearly a week to get anyone to even come look at it, and almost an entire month to fix it. Did I mention we moved in in May? That is just ridiculous. Within two weeks of moving in, our sink clogged up. We asked nearly every day for someone to come fix it for a week. Not only did no one come, but you didn't come until we woke up to MAGGOTS all over our kitchen because of all the rotten stuff we couldn't get rid of from the sink! I saw maggots every time I closed my eyes for a month. Right after our obnoxious upstairs neighbors moved in, they neglected to check how well they connected their washing machine, and ruined our ceiling in the hallway. You finally came to check our apartment after containing their mess and did absolutely nothing. I asked time and time again for a follow up. Then Labor Day, their washing machine hose busts and we wake up to a flooded hallway. Much worse than the first time. And of course, being Labor Day, it took much longer for anyone to come at all. All we got was realigning the pipes in the hall closet. No help in cleaning up. The ceiling dripped all day! And did anyone come back? No. It took nearly two months of repeated asking for someone to even come look at it. And what did your maintenance worker bring? White spray paint! All you intended to do was paint over this VERY severe water damage. I asked him several time while he was there to cut into the ceiling and check for mold. He tried to tell me that if there was mold you would be able to see it. Which is not true. I told the woman I spoke with at the office that I have dealt with mold before and I knew what needed to be checked. My family lost everything to mold. We couldn't see it. It was attached to the wood INSIDE the wall. Was the plan to wait until someone, possibly me since I've been exposed before, to get severely ill? THEN would you check?? After getting him to agree to cut a hole to check, he said he didn't have the tool for it and would come back tomorrow. He never came.
Among all of these severely neglected issues in our apartment alone, I can't imagine how horribly you're maintaining the rest of the complex. There was clearly no quality of work inspection before you rent out these units. Cabinet doors were crooked, with NAILS sticking out of the side of the cabinets. Every single one! My husband went thru and took them out just to safely close them. Dips in the living room ceiling. The shelves of the cabinets were made of poorly painted particle board that would come apart and chip off in just pulling dishes in or out. Toilet paper holder in our guest bath fell off while changing the roll. Hand towel holder fell out of the wall when I tried to put a towel in it. What looked like knife holes in our bedroom door. Like someone was throwing knives at the door. Tiles missing at the bottom of the tub. It doesn't matter if you don't generally look there, you're supposed to complete the job. Paint work above the showers was awful and inconsistent. Broken door on the storage outside. No lock. Not a broken lock, but no lock at all. Shelf inside that closet, broken. There's no peep hole in our front door, which you are legally bound to provide. When we moved in there were exposed, live wires for our doorbell.
Among things I was looking for when looking for apartments was costs for our dogs. This complex had the lowest pet deposit and no pet rent. Then SEVEN months into our lease we get a notice for "unauthorized dogs" and a demand for nearly $500 in fees and NEW fees just for having our dogs. Explain to me where that makes any legal sense. We got the notice on a Saturday. We heard it slipped in the door, my husband went and got it, we read it, and he went to speak with you almost immediately. But oh wait, he gets to the office and you are closed. You can't be bothered to be open on a Saturday but you'll send someone to out a notice in our door. On his way back from the office he calls the number you left on the notice. Not even a valid number. Now you look at this from our perspective and tell me that doesn't look like the shadiest bunch of [redacted].
I can't even guess how many times this complex changed management in the seven months we were there. But it's appalling how horribly we get treated. Every single change of staff messed something up. Losing money, saying we didn't pay something after we did and saying it would fix itself. Why couldn't you go in and fix it for me while I'm there? The customer service in this place is awful. And I would not recommend it to anyone. I hope none of the other Avistar complexes have this big of a problem. If they are, what kind of game are you playing?
