It is unfortunate that Ms. [redacted] is unhappy with the service I provided. Attached is a detailed invoice which I provided to Ms. [redacted] . Very often legal services do not result in a favorable outcome for the person contracting for the service. I sent her a copy of the invoice... along with a check for $600. When Ms. [redacted] came to my office for her free consultation she did not give me all the information needed to file for the restraining order she requested. Once I researched the issue I began to discover that based upon things that happened prior to her retaining me, filing a restraining order was most likely not going to result in the outcome she desired. I communicated this to her and offered to refund the balance of her retainer. I also told her that we could file the restraining order but without more evidence she would most likely not prevail. She decided it was best not to file at that time. She told me to hold on to the retainer because she thought she may need future services. In fact, she did come to see me about a different legal issue and I also charged that time against her retainer. At some point, she decided she wanted a refund of the balance of the retainer. I informed her that I would prepare a detailed invoice and cut a check for her at the beginning of the following month when I prepare my monthly billing statements. I did this and informed her the invoice and check were ready for her to pick up. She refused to take the invoice and check so I mailed it to her.I only charge for the time I spend on any engagement. However, I do have to be paid for the time I spend. The invoice I provided to Ms. [redacted] is a record of the time I spent and the balance of $600 has been mailed to her since she refused to take the check along with the invoice when she stopped by my office. It appears she wanted me to spend time on her case and advise her as to the best course of action for free. I regret that she is unhappy with the advice I gave her and hope she will take time to read the invoice in order to more fully understand why she is only receiving a check for the amount remaining on her retainer after I charged her for the time I spent.
