Barboa Electric Company Reviews (%countItem)

I contracted this company for an electrical upgrade for my parents house in Albuquerque. I was quoted $4000 for the job and was told it would take 1 week to complete. One week in Mr B called to tell me they were $2,200 over bid because it was taking longer than expected. Two days later the job was completed for the grand total of $6975! Nearly $3000 dollars over the original bid of $4000!

I was saddened to read the complaint submitted by this customer as my reputation has not been tarnished or questioned in this manner since I started my business in 1971. In our discussion I let the customer know that relocating the service (meter panel) from one end of the house to the other would cost higher than the normal service upgrade and gave her an ESTIMATE of $2500 to move the service. The customer asked about a "wish list" in addition to the relocation of the service and asked if it could be done for approximately $4000, I stated that we would attempt to stay within her budget, again, an ESTIMATE. The customer's parents occupy the property in question and the customer stated to "go ahead and do what they need and want". After opening two breaker panels and getting in the attic, we discovered a complete mess. This was discussed with the residents of the property. There were breakers "double lugged" which means they had two circuits on one breaker, one of the sub panels was located behind a gas water heater, among other issues. These two issues alone violated National Electrical Code (NEC) and caused a huge safety issue for the residents of the home. I called the customer and let her know that the work just to correct the major safety issues was well over the $4000 budget and I asked the customer if she wanted us to continue. The customer became very upset but asked that we continue and finish the entire project. The following day both the customer and her father apologized. Regardless of the outcome I am happy for the following reasons:

1. The customers parents are now living in an electrically safe home.

2. Her dad no longer has to stand on a step stool, over a gas water heater, to frequently reset a tripped breaker

3.All circuits have proper over current protection

4. GFCI receptacles were installed in the bathroom, kitchen and outdoors

5. Updated lighting fixtures with remote controls were installed.

6. New larger breaker box centrally located in home and brought to NEC guidelines was installed

7. All work was signed off on by a City of Albuquerque Electrical inspector

8. The resident, the customer's father, stated that we did a professional job.

An invoice was provided to the residents as per the customer's request and is attached. Attached is also a breakdown of materials and supplies.

I am rejecting this response because:

Mr. B indicated in his response that all work was signed off by a City of Albuquerque inspector. I called the City permit office on April 30 and I was informed that Mr. B did request a permit on April 9 and there was a pre-inspection conducted on April 11, but he never called the office to schedule a final inspection. Despite that fact that Mr. B cashed my check, this job is not finished. Obviously Mr. B has a problem with the truth. I do take responsibility for not insisting on a written estimate prior to giving the go ahead on a job this big. I put myself in a situation where it was easy to be taken advantage of, and I have learned a very valuable lesson. This is how I perceive the situation: Mr. B, after asking my parents what my husband and I did for a living, decided to increase the cost of the job by $3000. At the very least, he needs to schedule the final inspection ASAP and any work that the city deems still needs to done will be on his dime. I stand by my complaint.

Regards,
