Basic Handy Man Reviews (1)

Review: Bob Nardi/ Basic HandyMan Inc. was hired on October 31, 2013 to remodel the upstairs full bathroom in the residence of [redacted] Dr, Lynchburg, VA [redacted]. During the initial estimate [redacted] and I were told the job would take two weeks to complete for a price of $5850. The price was reduced to $4800 if we kept the existing tub, shower doors, and light fixtures. He was informed that there were serious leaks that had to be fixed from the bathtub, toilet, and sink. He was also told that the flooring around the toilet was weak and rotting. Work that was agreed to be done is as follows.

Readjusting sliding shower glass door

Removing old wall tiles and installing new 4”x4” antique white or beige wall tiles

Install new antique white or beige commode.

Rip up old floor and install new 12” x 12” ceramic antique white or beige tiles (satin finish)

Install new bathroom Vanity with a light oak finish. If possible with 2 or 4 draws, doors.

Install new counter top with a drop-in-sink antique white or beige

Install new mirror 36” x 30”

Install a new GFI outlet on wall above counter top

Fix all basement leaks that originated from upstairs bathroom Tub, commode, or vanity.

Work began on November 11, 2013 it is now November 27, 2013 and the work is not close to completion. November 20, 2013 I noticed not much work was being done when I asked about it I was then told the job was going to take three weeks in instead of two. By the third week, the ceramic flooring was installed but the floor was not leveled. Tile was put on the wall in a small spot so the toilet could be installed. Tile was applied to the opposite wall incorrectly the tiles are not straight some stick out further than others. I informed Bob that I was not happy with the poor job done on the wall. Also that quality of work was unacceptable and that he needed to redo the wall tiling. I was told that he didn’t see anything wrong with it and that I should circle that tiles that I didn’t like and he would change them. He then told me that there was nothing more that he would do till after the holiday and packed his tools and left at 10am after arriving at 9:30am on Tuesday 26,2013. Both walls need to be redone and do not look professional. I feel we were taken advantage of without knowledge of all the codes and proper techniques of installation. We have no idea of what needs to be done or how in order to correct a contractor that claims to have thirty years experience. But I can tell tile that is leaning and not in a straight line when I see it. After the walkout, I called other contractors to see how much it would be to complete the job. I was informed by two separate companies that the tile was not correct for that shower area. That proper water sealing needed to be done in the shower area that was not. That a permit was needed for the electrical work and needed to be inspected by an inspector. Bob never mentioned anything like that even after I asked several times if there was anything that I needed to provide or help with. I was basically told by two seperate contracting companies that the work that was done was incorrect, not to code, and would need to be completely redone. We can’t afford to start this process all over again [redacted] has paid $750 and I have already paid $2000 so far. We have no confidence after hearing from two separate contracting companies that Bob Nardi/ Basic HandyMan Inc. is capable of correcting or completing this remodel properly. So without getting our money back we at [redacted] Dr. will be stuck with only a working toilet upstairs instead of a remodeled full bath that was supposed to be completed by now.Desired Settlement: We request the money be refunded or Basic HandyMan Inc. pay $2750 to the professionals we hire to redo and actually finish this remodel.

Response:

After receiving a phone call from Mrs. [redacted] for an estimate I came to her house o [redacted] Drive, Lynchburg. Va. Upon entering her house her daughter said she had looked up so many reviews on contractors and every one of their customers had nothing but negativeremarks to say. Then when she googled me she was surprised because she told me my customers loved me for my work and honesty.

I gathered the information that I needed and went back to the shop and figured out the estimate. I called Mrs. [redacted] back and gave her the price of the estimate which was $5,850.00.

Mrs. [redacted] said she talked to her daughter she asked if I could bring the price down to $4,000.00, and I said I could not do that and still make a profit, but I would try my best and get back to her. I called Mrs. [redacted] the next day and gave her my best compromise price, which included not installing a new tub and just reinstalling her old shower door. My updated price included a 3 payment plan: 2600.00 upon contract, 1600.00 when the job was completed and $600.00 30 days after the job was complete. Mother and daughter both liked that plan.

Again I told them that the job would take 3 weeks and that the bathroom would not be able to be used while under construction, they both said that would not be a problem because they had a full working bathroom in the basement. I gave Mrs. [redacted] a sequence plan how I would proceed with the remodeling job:

1.Demolition:to remove all the old 4” x 4” wall tiles, 3 layers of old linoleum, old vanity, shower door, commode, and toilet paper holder and remove the squeaks from the flooring.

2.Repair rotten floor boards around the commode area and shower wall.

3.Installation of the new tile flooring and cutting to fit.

4.Installation of the new 4 1/4” x 4 1/4” wall tiles

5.Installation of the toilet paper holder in a new area and towel rack.

6.Installation of the new custom vanity andstopped the leaks from upstairs bathroom are. Replaced 3 hot and cold water valves that were also leaking.

7.Install the commode.

Mrs. [redacted]’s daughter came to me and said what everyone was asking for is when the commode would be installed, because they were inconvenienced when they had to go downstairs. I told her that wasn’t how I planned to do the job. I told her that I would have to tile the wall where the commode will reside first and then install the commode, which I did but also had to do the same for the toilet paper hold on the other wall. After my game plan was interrupted I continued to glue up the longest wall that the toilet paper holder was on. At the end of that day her daughter said that the wall was unacceptable, I said that I would come back on Monday and redo it to her satisfaction.( 2 )When I arrived Monday morning and knocked on the door, her boyfriend opened the door and said the ladies wanted to talk to me. Her daughter came up to me and said we are donewith this job and they did not want me to finish the job. I told her that did she realize that she was breaking the contract between her mother and I? She said she basically did not care and that she had reported me to the Revdex.com and ha called another contractor who said I did not know what I was doing. I told her that I did not want to but I would have to take her to court for breaking the contract and also the way I stretched out the payments for her mother my profits were at the end of the job.

Sincerely

Bob Nardi
