Baskfield Automotive Repair, Inc. Reviews (1)

Review: My [redacted] was bottoming out , very low in the rear. I took it in to Baskfield as my family has been doing for 15 years or so to raise the car so it would not bottom out and hit. He told me he had to call around and find a pump. He then told me, he had found one in Charlottesville and would have it delivered by [redacted] carrier. At this point he has had my car for 3 days, as I had to pay people to take me back and forth to work ( OK). I called him daily for a progress report on the part (pump) delivery. When the part supposedly arrived he said he didn't like it, how it looked, that was the evening of Aug 5th. He then told me about a conversion kit that would take care of the problem and that I wouldn't have the problem again.

He said the conversion kit would raise the car and it would not bottom out. I also had a oil change which I approved, at the same time, he took it upon himself to change my wiper blades without my consent ( ok, I think he based it on past family practices ). When I picked up my car, it was looking the same, very low to the ground, but he assured me, I would not have the problems again with bottoming out. I was actually concerned when I picked the car up and paid him. But, I am a woman and I know nothing about cars and I trusted him based on past services with my Father and Mother. Again, I was not very satisfied when I got the car back. For the next few days, I drove the car, it was doing the same thing it was before I paid him $715 dollars. I then took the car back, about 3 days later, as I had to get to work, I cried all night about the fact that he had kept my car for 4 days, and I had paid him $715 dollars cash for an oil change and wiper blades, my issue with bottoming out had not been fixed. If shocks were the problem, why would he order a pump from Charlottesville? He knew this was not the problem, but his way of getting labor cost out of me, as opposed to doing the right thing seems to have been his goal, as I am a woman. I took the car back as I mentioned, he then told me it was the springs, which he knew all the time, because he did not even inspect the car further. Again, I cried and wondered what could be done. I keep in touch with a guy by phone and text, and he told me to take it to [redacted]. I made an appointment at [redacted], they made an almost immediate assessment, that the car needed springs or at least spacers to lift the car. They had a $25 fee to put my car on the rack an have the mechanic to look at it. Upon telling them of my dilemma, and told them what I had paid for shocks, they were stunned and waived the fee. They stated that any mechanic knows that shocks do not raise a car, especially a mechanic with years of experience, as [redacted] is. I took the car back and he told me he would call to North Carolina to get the springs I needed and he would not charge me to install them , ( What mechanic does this, unless he knows he has wronged someone?) I told him that I no longer trusted him and would never come back to him again, because I no longer trusted him! He then told me , he didn't need me, that he had plenty of customers. I then told him, I was going to try to do something to see if I could at least report this to somebody, he told me to do whatever the spirit leads me to do( I had sang at his church with my choir ). I contacted a friend who told me about the Revdex.com and a mechanic in New Kent who could fix it. my friend contacted the mechanic in New Kent, and he and I went to his house on Sunday. He measured my car in the rear and began his work , we arrived at 10:15 am , by 11:10 am, he measured my car again, it was at 27 inches and level, not sagging anymore, that was Sunday 8/25/13 and my car is riding smoothly, not sagging or bottoming out when I hit a bump, at the same time, I paid this mechanic who is much younger and with less experience $100 for parts and labor. I paid Baskfield approximately $ 295 for shocks that I did not need and $320 for what other mechanics called unnecessary labor. As stated, he supposedly orders a part from Charlottesville and it is to be delivered bu [redacted] ( A PUMP ) He said he wasn't happy with the pump, a pump may have raised the car, conversion kits does not. These coilover shocks he has installed are used to lower cars basically and sometimes to raise cars , but rarely. Coil over shocks can not raise a [redacted] because it has to much trunk overage over the rear suspension, I have sit down and did this research with a mechanic friend. I have no doubt the Baskfield knew this and just wanted to get money for the car, because I am a woman.

Although he put he did put the shocks on the car that I did not need obviously, he did install them, but needlessly at a cost of $295 , and $320 for labor for labor he should not have performed,, because he knew it was not the problem or why else would have trried to order a pump from elsewhere. Besides [redacted] has a yard full of [redacted], and this part he ordered he claims was hard to find...Desired Settlement: He charged me a total of $715.38 ( I am asking for my labor cost of $320 for a non repair )

$615.00 related to the shocks I did not need and they did not solve the problem to boot.

I am willing to pay for the shocks, because they are on the car @$295

I should not have to pay him for a repair that did not solve my problem, as it was not electronic , electrical, just a hardware part problem that does not require a lot of troubleshooting for a mechanic with his experience, plus I did not ask him to do anything to my wipers, but I will forgo that. So, I am asking for my $320 dollars back, as I had to pay someone else to fiv what he was asked to fix.

Response:

09/09/2013. Spoke with [redacted] who states that after a diagnostic on the vehicle the original recommendation for the work was to replace the air pump and the air bags. This is an expensive repair of 1600.00. The consumer stated she could not afford this work so he offered the conversion kit to help with the shocks. After the consumer brought the car back stating the car was still riding to low for her, he offered to replace the springs for cost of the springs and no labor costs. She was to get back with him but never did.

He is willing to offer the labor costs of [redacted] that the consumer has requested.
