Basta Pasta Reviews (%countItem)

(1) Unfair seating of African American guests. On an extremely cold day (near (below) 29 degrees, it was noted that several of the African American guests were seated near the doorway. Initially, we were sat at a table with hard outdoor chairs. A request was made to move. When mentioning it to the waitress she stated that she would need to ask the Manager. Upon return, the waitress offered to switch out our chairs, but said we could not move from the location. It was noted that there were a few vacant tables in the same room & the next room. Needless to say it was rather drafty as we were seated near a busy door which lead to the entry of the restaurant for seated guests and those picking up orders. I was also a guest with a reservation.

(2) I ordered a dish that I typically order at the restaurant and it turned out tasing as if they had poured an extreme amount of salt onto my food, making it unpalatable. This of course of greater concern as it is know the risk factors particularly in the African American Community regarding salt intake

(3) It was noted that there appeared to be a lack of diverse workforce present.

(4) On a previous visit to this restaurant, the hostess sat me and my guests who were elderly in a DARK cornered booth with very limited lighting. We complained, but again the staff refused to move us. We had to use phone flashlights to see and the bar scene did not scene was not the preference for my guests. There were many open tables on that day

I had been to this same restaurant several weeks prior to my initial visit with my fiends who happen to be Caucasian and my experience with the food served and seating was totally different. It was also noted that they had a covering outside the doorway which would buffer extreme weather conditions.

Basta Pasta Response • Feb 25, 2020

I can assure you that this is not the case at Basta Pasta. As stated by the complainant they had a reservation. We use a system called open table for our reservations. The system assigns tables according to availability in the restaurant at the time of reservation. We can go in and change the assigned table if we would like prior to the reservation but there is no way for us to know the gender or race of the person who made the reservation. The reservations are mapped out for the evening if there are open tables at the time someone comes in the reason is the reservation for that table has not arrived yet. Each table at our establishment usually have 2 to 4 reservations on them for a weekend shift and the reason it is not possible to move reservations around is that the next reservations for the open table they see may be coming in in the next 30 or 45 minutes which would not leave them enough time to enjoy their dinner. Our dining room is recorded every shift so we can go back if we have any trouble to investigate and we are more then happy to show you our tapes. The chairs at our tables are wooden or wicker and when someone complains about their seat we offer one of the other options we have at our restaurant. The lighting in our restaurant is dim and we keep it the same for every day and night we are open. Anytime we are able to accommodate a request by a customer we are more then happy to comply if we are able. We treat all of our guests equal always and as for diversity in our staff we emply currently anAfrican American, Caucasian, Hispanic, Hawaiian and mixed race, lesbian, gay and straight staff. We also have servers who have visible piercings and tattoos for our front of house and back of house staff. A manager walks around our dining rooms every shift and engages with customers to ask how their experience is and if they were told a meal was not edible they would either have it remade or offer another dish and compensate the customer how they see fit. We have had people complain in the past about the cold air coming in when the door is open and this is why we invested in having a custom vestibule built to accommodate our customers. The sizing of our vestibule needed to be enlarged and so it was removed so the adjustments could be made and will be reinstalled when it is complete. If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Customer Response • Feb 26, 2020

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
My reservation was made in person and not through open table. My observations were made when I came in earlier that evening to make a reservation and then upon my arrival when I returned and was seated. I have been to restaurant on several occasions, but this incident is troubling. In my opinion it could have been better resolved with the offering of a different seating as requested. There were other open tables available and it was later in the evening where less guests were arriving.
I am very pleased to hear about the diversity of the staff, however I have not seen any African American hostess or wait staff persons.
