I brought in my iPhone for what would seem a simple screen replacement. After picking it up they informed me they had broken the home button in the process. They assured me it would be taken care of and they would fix my phone or replace it within a week. 38 DAYS LATER the part for my phone arrived. They restored all the home buttons functions except the Touch ID! Then told me I was out of luck and they wouldn’t do anything more. I’m not looking to rip anyone off but when you do a job you do it right or you make it right. I will never go here again.
The description of events provided by the customer are correct. He did bring in a phone for a screen repair. We did repair the screen and in the process damaged a cable on the home button. The consequence of that damage was that the customer was no longer able to use the touch ID on the phone.
We attempted to repair the problem by getting a new home button, which took some time to get here due to all of the problems in the supply chain that have occurred because of Covid 19. When the part did arrive we promptly replaced it. Unfortunately the new part was not able to correct the problem. Everything on the phone works just fine, except for the touch ID.
The way Apple builds their phones makes it very unlikely that a cable damaged on the home button can be completely repaired. That is the case in this instance. We know of one person in Southern California who has a machine that allows for fine soldering and charges $225 and up to repair home buttons on apple phones. They are the only ones we know of who attempt these types of repairs and even with them they are not always successful.
It was my impression that the customer wanted us to replace his phone and valued his phone at $900. The value of a used apple iphone 7plus with 128 gb, such as the custonmer owns, is approximately $300. We have put $100 into the phone to repair the screen and an additional $50 to replace the home button. The customer was not charged for any of these repairs.
Our assertion is that the value of those repairs is fair compensation for the loss of the touch id function. Customer indicated the digital ID is important to him because it makes the phone easier to use in certain instances. In no way is the phone prevented from delivering all the basic functionality that cell phones provide. A function he likes has been lost. We agree and have paid half the value of the phone as compensation. We do not agree that a larger compensation is merited.
