Baughan's Financial Service Reviews (2)

Bob is not an upstanding man. I was quoted a price for copies of my tax returns and he would not stand behind the quote. Says he can not open a computer for $25.00. I believe if you quote a price you should then honor that price. Any reputable owner would have stood by his employees quote. Bob also talked bad about the former owner who now has dementia. I would advise people to stay away from this business.

Review: I went to this business on 1/30/16 and spoke with Teresa [redacted] about getting my 2015 taxes done. I was in her office for 45 min to 1 hour. She did not tell me that I was being charged the moment I sat in her chair. I was under the impression she was reviewing my information and then I would decide if I wanted to proceed. 30 of those minutes she looked over my 2014 taxes and told me I should reinstate them because I deserved more money. Then she looked over some of my 2015 paperwork, but needed more information that I didn't have. She then said she "would charge $500.00 to do my taxes." I told her, "no thanks." She then left her office and proceeded to make copies of all of my 2015 tax documents. However, when she returned and handed my folder back, she withheld all of my original 2015 tax documents along with her copies she made. My 2014 tax documents were still in the folder. Unfortunately, I did not check the folder till 2/1/16. I called her immediately and asked her if she had my 2015 tax documents. She said yes and to come get them tomorrow (2/2/16). So, on 2/2/16 I sent my wife to get them at her office and she told my wife that she will not give her the documents until we pay her $200.00. I called the owner, Robert [redacted], the same day and was treated very poorly. He would not listen to me and I even offered to pay half of the $200 bill and he said I insulted him and still refused to give me my documents. So, I told him that I would have to get a lawyer and he told me that if I got a lawyer he would own my house and take everything I have.Desired Settlement: Return all of my 2015 tax documents that I walked in with on 1/30/2016.

Response:

Reference Case # [redacted] Dear Sir/ Madam: This response is broken into two section. The first section is from my General Manager, Teresa [redacted]. She dealt directly with [redacted] and I wanted to make sure she put things in her words. I looked at the complaint and what I saw was incredible. It would appear that [redacted] fabricated his story with just enough bend to serve his interests. I sincerely believe that [redacted] returned home and his wife went ballistic so now [redacted] is caught between us and his wife. The second part of this response I wrote because I dealt directly with [redacted] and found him to be difficult to talk to because he was so excited he wanted to talk over me when I tried to calm him. I have also included a copy of [redacted]'s bill which includes our adjustment. Section One I met with [redacted] on Saturday, January 30, 2016. I reviewed his 2014 tax return, which was prepared by another tax preparer, and made suggestions on how it could be amended to receive a refund. I also reviewed his 2015 information which he had prepared in [redacted]. I then made a lengthy list of information needed to complete his 2015 return, with the understanding that the new information would positively impact the amount that he owed on this tax return. He left his W-2s, mortgage form 1098, health coverage farm 1095B, rental property information, and personal property tax forms. The next business day, February 1, 2016, he called and requested his W-2s back. And at that time he said he would pay me for my work. I asked him to give me a chance to complete the return and the matter was left at that. The next day, February 2, 2016 his wife, Caitlin, came in to collect the W-2s and other information and then left when she was told there would be a charge. Our company does not advertise free consultations. Obviously he realized this was a service with charge and he did offer to pay for my time. Section Two In my conversation, on February 3, 2016, with [redacted] by phone, he was irate and threatened several actions which constituted defamation of character (quoting revenue circular 230, the Revdex.com, 12 on your side and small claims court). It was almost like he had done this before and had a set plan. I explained with difficulty (interrupted enough times that I finally said to him, "show me the respect I gave you and listen to what I'm saying"). I then said if you embark on this course of actions, I would meet him in court, but then I added "I don't think you want to go this way". I sensed a conflict between his wife and us and offered him a ten minute one time offer to settle everything for $150. He immediately countered with $100 and I then said this was the end of this conversation. Pointing out that he engaged us, left his documents with us as further proof of that engagement and then is attempting to renege on everything and wants our services for free. I should also add that I have trained my people to be very careful and discern what is an interview for our services (which we don't start by spewing tax advice and usually happens on agreement prior to the appointment) and what is an actual engagement. This is my General Manager and I hold her in the highest respect regarding how our business works. Our years of having no complaints also gives credence to the fact that we consider our selves fair and reasonable business people. Respectfully, Robert [redacted], CPA President

Response:

I have reviewed the offer and/or response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

I am not receiving my federal documents, tax information, and personal information that I rightfully own and Mr. [redacted] fabricated his response to the Revdex.com. So, I am not happy with this proposed action. Mr. Moorhouse is quick to say that he has years of no complaints and it doesn't surprise me with his bullying tactics, as he stated, "10 minute deal." He was very forceful, manipulative, and he threatened me. On 2/2/16 I did counter offer Mr. Moorhouse with $100.00, which is half of what I was charged to complete my taxes the previous year with another company. When Teresa told me that the cost to do my taxes was going to be $500.00, that is when I decided to leave. I asked her before I walked out of that office if I owed her anything and she said, "No, sir!" My papers were deliberately withheld and they are trying to scam me.
