I am rejecting this response because: There are currently no signs of the installation being faulty When this all started the original installer even meet Bayer reps on site to re-install per their recommendations There are also no signs of the house settling in this area - cracked sheet rock, etc Since the re-install the Bayer reps have been on site and have adjusted both sets of doors As many times as we've spoken with ABC and Bayer since the re-installation there has been no mention of faulty installation again or house settling I've attached three photos showing were the water is coming in This shows that the door is not sealing even thou Bayer Reps have removed and re-installed several different weather strips after the re-installation per their representatives recommendations

On 4/30/2019, we purchased Bayer Built (BB) maple doors and woodwork from Country Lumber in Big Lake Minnesota. I have purchased hundreds of BB doors between 1995-2002 and again approximately 3 dozen doors between 2016 and 2019. I had zero quality issues with BB doors between 1995 and 2002. I have had quality problems with 3 different BB sets of doors purchased since 2016. The first problems were with a rough finish on their factory finished doors in 2017. I did not complain then. I lightly sanded them and added a smooth finish coat. The second batch of doors had one defective door. The retailer agreed it was defective and re-ordered it free of charge to me, The retailer then told me BB refused to accept it as defective. In this last batch of 16 maple doors, I discovered that there were contaminates soaked into the wood that became visible with the stain application. I also noted that some veneered jambs provided with the doors soaked up stain excessively, while the other same type of veneered jambs, took stain normally. These appear to have been sourced differently by BB. We processed the products exactly the same, yet the outcome was different. We consider this to be a quality control issue for the products that BB is sourcing from Malaysia. The doors took stain different between styles, rails and panels also. We processed these all exactly the same. We understand that wood products take stain irregularly but it does seem excessive because the manufacturer is probably sourcing veneer wood cut with differing methods and mixing these. It is also unacceptable to discover contaminates soaked into finish wood products. BB tells me that they accommodate these issues by using a complicated 5 step process to finishing these doors in their plant. They cite this described custom process like a specification to finish their doors and accommodate issues, yet it is not a documented specification or instruction provided with BB doors as an expectation.

Additional discussion has taken place between the dealer who sold this project and the complainant. To my knowledge, the dealer has made an offer with support from Bayer Built to reach resolution.

We do not agree with the complainant’s assessment of product quality. We also welcome the opportunity to discuss product traits and best practices for finishing with anyone who may read this. Generally speaking, high quality coatings should be used, and instructions for application for that particular coating and the wood specie on which it is being applied should be followed.

Customer Response • Jun 24, 2019

I am rejecting both this conclusion and the offer that the vendor has told us about. Bayer Built has only offered at this point to provide us with "a few doors free of charge" That no longer helps us at this point. I asked for a credit on 5 of the 16 doors. I can't use replacement doors at this point. My customer would not wait an additional month for us to get their job done and install their doors. We had to proceed without Bayer Built's cooperation. We had to sand deep into the veneer to remove the contaminants that appeared after staining and finishing. That is NOT normal. Doors are supposed to be finished sanded and only require a light sanding to smooth grain that stands up with humidity and time. We did that the first time. That should have been enough and it was for the majority of sides of doors and jambs. Their explanation that we did not sand the doors right or use the right process does not address the fact that many of the doors turned out fine and that even on the doors that were defective at least one side turned out fine. They also never address that we had to process one set of jambs completely differently than another set of jambs because they were not the same kind of veneer cut. Veneers can be cut so that the grain is open more or less. Staining was what highlighted that difference. I feel we are being as reasonable as possible. My offer to accept credit does not fully compensate me for my time and materials to remedy the situation. It also does not compensate me for my time in debating them or processing this complaint. I am being more than fair to accept a credit for 5 doors. They should be reasonable and accept that too. Thank you.

It is unfortunate there is not recognition of the need to adequately prepare wood surfaces before finishing. Instructions are readily available. The door manufacturer’s website details steps to take on their site at https://www.woodgrain.com/resources/. Instructions from our primary vendor partners are compiled and readily available on our website at https://www.bayerbuilt.com/resources/installation-and-maintenance/care-and-maintenance. Additionally, finishing instructions provided by Bayer Built with the doors are included in the attached PDF.

All these instructions emphasize the need for thorough and consistent sanding before staining. Light sanding is inadequate.

The same instructions should be followed for mouldings and jambs. Failure to do so results in circumstances like those experienced. This is especially true of maple, which is noted to be a difficult to stain wood, and the specie used in this case. Moreover, dark color stains used on maple such as those used in this case, exacerbate this even more.

Prefinishing services are available from Bayer Built. In our facility, all proper steps are taken in the sanding and coating processes to produce desirable results we stand behind. Had proper steps been taken by the finisher and instructions followed from the onset, this circumstance could have been averted. Ownership now lies with the finisher.

If the dealer chooses to offer some or any new doors or credit in some form as a path toward resolution, our offer to support to a degree as a show of good faith to our dealer partner remains intact. All communication in this regard needs to be directed through the dealer with whom the original transaction was made. If any new doors are provided, the finishing process needs to be amended from previous to prevent the same thing from occurring.

I wanted to also add to our complaint that we again had water coming in through the door last night Thank you, *** ***copied and pasted from email

We purchased a Bayer Built French door that has not sealed since its installation We have had people out to look at the door about times We have been told even though the door is leaking that their is nothing more they can do Than they came back out and installed a thicker weather stripping, which still is not working After this they told me they can put the thinner weather stripping in (which did not work the first time) or I can pay a discounted rate for a part that is not warrantied Supposedly this new part they've come out with is all much as the original purchase price of the original door It seems that if a company has to come out with a new part that addresses these concerns that I can not be the only one dealing with this particular issue We now have had rain get in the house on our carpet and enameled trim at the header So the entire seal of the door is leaking This has been going on for a year and I'm concerned about the duration Part of the length is du

Multipoint locks offer significant value in providing and maintaining performance of double door systems such as this. The multipoint locks available as an option at time of original purchase did add cost to the entry system and thus were not specified when ordered.
A new multipoint lock option, which has become available since the original consumer purchase, has been offered at a significant discount, as a resolution to this situation and would likely improve performance relative to the installation/settling issues.

I am rejecting this response because:
