On September 27th, 2015, I was working as the cashier. A girl walked in and was in the process of buying a drink, when a gentleman ran inside and stated, "hey I just hung up the nozzle for a car parked on pump 6, there was gas spilling out of...
the car." The owner of the car, which happened to be the girl, said yeah that is my car. I explained to her that when you "purchase gas" it is important that you stand next to your car, even if the automatic shut off switch has been activated. Never once did I state that this happens once every one hundred times. She did not say a word and walked out. I went outside while she was getting into her car and started cleaning the small area of gas with approximately a cup of kitty litter. I did not know [redacted] was getting gas or I would have advised to please stay next to her car until she was finished fueling. The oil companies have made the process of getting gas easy for the customer and California has pushed legislation to make gas stations more environmental friendly. But, gas is still a dangerous substance that needs to be monitored, especially by the customers when they are fueling. There are a number of reasons why this may have happened. First of all, the car could have been hit or have a damaged tank that does not allow the fuel pump to work correctly. Second, the nozzle might not have been placed properly over the fuel valve, causing the fuel to spill outside of the vehicle. Third, I will review the footage from that day to make sure someone else did not tamper with [redacted]'s car while she was fueling. Lastly, the pump was tested and monitored after [redacted] left. The automatic shut off valve worked properly. I have attached documentation of receipts. The nozzle, pump, and shut off switch all worked properly all day. On September 28th I replaced the nozzle for precautionary reasons. Before and after the incident we did not have and issue with the pump.
