The concern with the vehicle was a loss of brake fluid. The rear brakes were worn metal to metal so excessively that the outside braking surface was completely worn away to the cooling fins of the rotor. The caused the pistons of the brake caliper to extend too far and fall out of the caliper. This...

was the major hydraulic brake fluid leak. The passenger brake pads were also worn metal to metal and the brake rotor was .002” under the manufacture’s discard spec. We checked the passenger rear brake caliper and found it was starting to seize. Rear brake pads were recommended due to no braking surface left. Rear rotors were recommended due to 1 severely damaged rotor and 1 rotor under spec. 1 rear caliper was recommended due to severe damage from brake pad wear. And the other was recommended due to seizing. Both rear wheel seals were recommended as standard replacement when removing a wheel hub that is oil filled. It is also standard to replace brake rotors in pairs. Brake pads come in a set that replace both wheels per axle
A diagnostic fee is always charged to a customer who does not perform the work at our facility. When work is performed the diagnostic fee is waived. Telling us what he wants fixed is after he is informed of the actual problem, after our technicians diagnosed the vehicle. The customers original guess at the failure was a brake line coupler that he replaced himself.
The customer was informed when the driver called the repair shop that he was adding several quarts of brake fluid to the vehicle that is unsafe for the road, that the brake system is severely malfunctioning and the truck will lose all braking power. The customer states “He is doing 20 mph on sunrise, he will be ok” We advised him again that this is a major concern and the truck will lose all braking power. The customer stated “I do not want to pay for a tow”. When the vehicle was diagnosed and the customer was made aware of how serious the concern is, the customer called and told our receptionist to have us stop doing work on the truck. He was going to take it for a run at night and bring it back. The customer was then advised again how severe this malfunction was and that it is a major DOT violation. Given the customers temperament and lack of concern for how serious this malfunction is previously we were concerned the customer would drive the vehicle again. We called Albany to find out what the repair shops guidelines are for such a scenario and they directed us to call Suffolk County Police motor carrier division. The Sargent arrived promptly and spoke with the customer over the phone. The customer then arrived and was told by the officer this malfunction and matter is a repair or tow concern only
Any vehicle that is brought to our facility with a concern is subject to a diagnostic fee, unless the repairs are made here. Then we waive the diagnostic fee as a courtesy
The parts in question were so worn that multiple parts were failing. The mounting surface of the rotor was completely worn away to the cooling fins, about ½” of steel on that brake surface alone. Over 1” of steel total. The brake pad being worn to the backing plate with no brake material left fails NYSI. The hydraulic brake fluid leak fails NYSI. The rotors below manufacturer discard spec fails NYSI. And the seizing brake caliper fails NYSI
The customer had a lack of concern for his drivers well being and innocent people who may have been injured on the road by his vehicle. This vehicle should never have been driven in the condition it was in.

Review: Brought vehicle for repair and they tried to sell me excessive repairs more then I needed. I then had to pay them a diagnosis fee even though I told them what I wanted done. I only wanted specific repair done and they told me that they won't do what I wanted but will do what they want . I will not spend money on repairs that's not needed. I then had to tow vehicle to a different mechanic shop. So I had to pay a diagnosis fee of $171.00 which I did not need or want. I gave them the diagnosis already. Then I had to tow vehicle for $150 since they held my vehicle hostage telling me to repair what they want or pay diagnosis fee. So now I'm out of $321.00 which I should of never had to pay. The vehicle was repaired at a different mechanic and I was told I was right and didn't need additional repair. The parts was in good condition to pass any inspection by the state. So best brothers was trying to rip me off. BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE THAT COST ME MONEY OUT OF MY POCKET BECAUSE THEY WANT TO SELL ME REPAIRS THAT I DID NOT NEEDDesired Settlement: Refund the $325

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

Best Brothers are lying about 90% of situation. I will agree break fluid was leaking slowly out of rear caliper. I inspected truck once arrived at best brothers and told [redacted] the mechanic that I see the break caliper leaking. I called [redacted] before best brothers or I saw the truck and said maybe it's a break line coupler. Best brothers are distorting the facts . I told then I inspected the breaks and wanted the drivers side caliper and rotor replaced and obvious wheel seal. Also common sense to replace rear pads. The passenger caliper was not frozen or semi frozen and the rotor that best brothers said they measured didn't meet spec. Well first the caliper wasn't frozen and the rotor did meet manufacturer spec. The other mechanic I brought it to said it met spec and caliper was never frozen at all. Best brothers told me they will not do repair I wanted. They only Change in pairs. Rotors and calipers don't need to be changed in pairs ( it's hydraulic) . Common sense plus my new mechanic told me not necessary to change if not needed. I was told it would be safe to drive with no issues. Best brothers just wanted to over charge me for repairs that didn't need to be done. I will pay if needed. I will not replace parts that's needed. My new mechanic agreed that I only needed both rear pads, drivers rear caliper and rotor and this is considered safe to manufacture spec of rotor. I paid $1100 with new mechanic. The best brothers wanted over $2000 for repairs that I didn't need. They try to hold my vehicle ransom had it towed. They they tell me I have to pay diagnosis fee after I told them what I wanted done. What a joke. The [redacted] said it's our way or we call the police. They have the nerve to try to over charge me then when I say I'm going to take somewhere else they charge me a diagnosis fee. When the [redacted] called me and said wheels are off and gave me estimate I drove there within 2 minuts ( I'm only couple blocks away) the wheels were on and in same spot last time I was there. They are 100% liars. They didn't even look at truck. Then [redacted] told me.... I tried to move caliper when wheels are still on with a screw driver and caliper never mover so that means it's frozen he tells me. Wowwwww are you kidding me? A screw driver you used in you nice button up shirt ? Liar. He said he did it himself . Another lie. My friend said same problem with them and now I believe it. They are horrible with trying to scam me for last time. I want my money back and I will report to dmv next. I never had this problem with anyone else
