Dear Ms. [redacted],We all fell in love with your sweet puppy when he first came to see us with multiple congenital medical problems. During the last few months we have all worked diligently attempting to treat the eye defects he was born with to prevent infection. Unfortunately these birth defects common...
in the Mastiff breed often require multiple surgeries to correct with no guarantee of a successful outcome. Anesthesia and surgery carries inherent risks which you were informed of and consented to with a written agreement. Although he experienced a common post surgical complication, the surgery went well and he was discharged doing well. We went above and beyond the service provided by most veterinary hospitals by offering a third party payment option to defray the cost of the surgery and treatment. I am so sorry to be informed that since then, apparently your puppy has experienced persistent eye problems following the initial corrective surgery, however it was impossible for our veterinarians to evaluate the post surgical healing because you failed to keep his follow up appointments and you elected not to allow us to examine the patient. Our veterinarians have treated thousands of pets successfully, many of them with similar eye defects and know that they often need long term treatment and daily care. Due to our concern and sympathy for your dog's condition we have made an offer to pay for a consultation by an ophthomologic specialist at the [redacted] hospital in Boston. Thank you for seeking help to resolve these issues. Best Pets Veterinary Hospital provided the high quality care and services outlined in the surgical consent and payment agreements. We provided this at Best Pets Veterinary Hospital in the hope of avoiding much more costly services of a referral to a specialty facility, however it appears that he might need that. We share in your disappointment and frustration but also realize that responsible pet ownership carries long term emotional and financial commitment. Our hope is that you understand that we did our part to try to help him with his chronic eye issues and he can get the care he needs in the future. Sincerely,[redacted] D.V.M.
