Review: I could use some help resolving an issue I am having with Beth Sholom concerning my mother's hearing aids which have been destroyed. Beth Sholom refuses to accept any responsibility for the destruction, insisting that my mother was responsible. My mother, Jacqueline Harris, is suffering from advance dementia and she will turn 93 on Christmas Day. She currently resides in the nursing home at the Beth Sholom facility on [redacted].Some Background: My mother was born and raised in a small town ([redacted]) in upstate New York. She lived there most of her life until 2010. My father died in June 2008 and my mother continued to live in the house they had shared for nearly 60 years. In early 2010 relatives in [redacted] informed me that my mother's behavior was becoming increasingly erratic and they did not feel that she could continue to live alone. In the spring of 2010 I moved her to Virginia and she lived with my wife and I. We took her to a Doctor where the dementia was diagnosed and we also purchased new hearing aids for her (she is nearly deaf without them). She continued to live with us over the next 5+ years while her condition continued to deteriorate. During this time we took her to the Beth Sholom adult day center (5 days per week) for the first four years until it closed and then to the Circle Center adult day center. Over the five years the trips to the emergency room for issues like dehydration, minor viruses, weakness continued to increase until they culminated with the fifth emergency room visit in 5 months this past September. This last visit resulted in a short hospital stay and a rehab stint at Beth Sholom. She is now wheelchair bound and requiring more care that my wife and I can provide so a decision was made to move her into a nursing home. Since our experiences with Beth Sholom had been positive (both as a rehab facility and with the adult day center) we chose to place her there. In early November when visiting my mother I noticed that she did not have her hearing aids in so I went to her room to get them. (This was by no means the first time I had done this) When I couldn't find them in her room I asked a nurse about them as it had happed before and they were quickly located on a nurse's cart. I was told that they were missing and had been for several days but they were searching for them. When I went home I called the Director of Nursing, Vicki B[redacted], to discuss the matter and asked what they were going to do about it. I thought they lost them so they should replace them but was told that the nurses had seen her take them out so she must have been the one responsible. She called me back later with her boss and I was told they weren't responsible so they would not replace them. My mother is confined to a wheelchair, cannot dress and undress herself and cannot put the hear aides in her ears by herself. The hearing are tethered together with a string that goes around her neck when she has them in so that if one falls out it won't be lost. Several days later I got call from one of the nurses at the facility that her hearing aids had been found tangled in clothes. When I asked it they had gone through the laundry I was told that they didn't know. Over the next week or so whenever I visited my mother and noticed that she didn't have her hearing aids, I asked the nurses about it I was told they didn't know anything. After several calls to Ms B[redacted] I was told that she had seen them but they didn't look right so she was going to have their hearing and speech person look at them. When I called her back about them I was informed that they were unworkable. I then assumed, incorrectly it seems, that since the hearing aids were found mixed in with her clothes and that Beth Sholom care givers dress and undress her that they would accept responsibly. I was again told that since no one saw it happen my wheelchair bound mother might have done it so they are not responsible. They suggested that maybe she took them out and put them in her pocket. First, it would be next to impossible for her to put something in her pants pocket while sitting in a wheelchair, second I was told the hearing aids were found tangled in clothes, not in a pocket. and third I would assume they would go through pockets after taking the clothes off and putting them in the laundry. The most likely scenario is that a care giver pulled her sweater/shirt over her head while undressing her without removing the hearing aids first, and that the string along with the attached hearing aids got caught in the garment and came with and went into the laundry with the garment. When my mother was living with us and was still able to dress and undress herself this happened on occasion. Therefore I feel Beth Sholom should assume responsibility for the hearing aids.I am not implying that Beth Sholom is not a good nursing home or except for this issue is not taking good care of my mother but I find their position on this issue unreasonable and very frustrating.Desired Settlement: Beth Sholom Accept responsibility
