Big City Asphalt Reviews (%countItem)

Poor work. Surface reseal coating has white marks all over it since it was coated, foot prints of their workers, it's washing off almost the same week. Was promised they would fix it in January. We've been contacting them and the fo not reply. This was an $8800 project with warranty- I think because we're a church they feel they can treat us like this. We want what we paid for. Quality work that is not falling apart (pit hole patch) and coming up (lot costing)

Desired Outcome

At this point we want the promised repairs and corrections done to the already failing work that was gone. Refill / patch / coat the pot hole and recoat all areas that are showing poor work. Our lot is not busy there's no reason the top coat should be off this soon except for poor work and cheap supplies.

+1

We were sold details of the project by Adam K that were not delivered. Work is not as it was sold to us. No response to requests for correction.
On 1/10/20, Adam K from Big City Asphalt, knocked on our door as he was doing work in the neighborhood and was soliciting us because it would be easy to take on more work in the area considering they were in Kissimmee. He offered us the following:
1. Crushed Asphalt from the road to our garage. It's approximately 300 feet or so.
2. He would dig down 4 inches to remove the earth and replace it with the crushed asphalt material.
3. We told him we wanted to do crushed concrete and have a paver lined edging put in but he convinced us to use his product and he could come back and do the pavers once complete.
4. The dumptruck would bring material the next morning and they would complete the job that day and the cost would be $3700 for the crushed asphalt.
5. The paver estimate was around $800. So we agreed based upon those factors.

A. The crushed asphalt was delivered the next day and there was no one here from the company so they dumped it in our grass. When I addressed this with Adam he said he asked them to drop it at the end of the driveway by the road. That killed all the grass and he was able to get it all out as we requested.
B. His team worked many hours on the project (it was Friday) but was not able to finish that evening so he asked if he could store his equipment on our property for the weekend. We agreed. They would have to come back on Monday to finish the job. He asked for $3000 of the $3700 and he would collect the rest once the job was complete. We agreed.
C. ***WE THEN DISCUSSED THE PAVER PORTION of the job. We gave him a print out of the paver type we wanted to use and he said he would see how he could fit that in and get back to us. ***
D. On Monday, he came back and I asked him about certain areas that looked to be unfinished and asked if he could have his team remove the debris and flatten out the mounds of dirt they left. He agreed. Later that day he came to collect the rest of the money. I told him that the items were not taken care of. He said they would be coming down shortly to correct. I gave him the check because at this point I trusted him. No one ever came back.
E. He then told me that he would not be able to pave the edge of the driveway as he sold us because it would be too expensive and we would be better off hiring another company to do that part as he didn't have the tools to complete a job like that. We would never have gone with his offer if he wasn't going to be able to do the paver piece. Again, just telling us what we wanted to hear so he could get the sale.
F. We have texted and called him several times with no response because of the following issues:

1. The debris and mounds of dirt were never taken care of. I have since done the work myself.
2. Address the Paver portion of the project. We have since started doing the work ourselves and its taking months.
3. The driveway does not have 4 inches of asphalt in several areas. Grass is growing through it. We have determined this because as we dig down 8 inches to lay the paver base material along the edge, we can see that there is less than 4 inches in many areas. This is unacceptable.

He was very clever not to give us project plan or a receipt. He also had us write the check out to him personally vs. the company. That should have been a red flag.

I have tried to get in contact with Brandon Hayes who is the owner according to the card Adam gave us. The only number listed is the one that goes to Adam's cell phone. 407-799-8170 On the website - bigcityasphaltfl.com, the only want to contact is to ask for a free estimate so I went through that process to see if I could get to Brandon Hayes that way. No luck. I'm concerned that this Adam K is representing himself as Big city asphault but is not a part of the company.

Thank you

Desired Outcome

We would like Big City Asphalt, Brandon Hayes, to send someone out to our home to correct the following issues: Areas of the driveway that do not have 4 inches of product need to be fixed. Adam bragged about the A+ rating from Revdex.com. That may need to be looked into if this is the type of sales people they employee and how they do business.

Faulty residential asphalt driveway. Contractor said they will take care of but has failed to show up 3 times now and now he is not responding - MIA
On January 15, 2020 we signed a contract with your company to install an asphalt driveway at our property on in***. The project began on the 15th and was completed the following day. January16th you (Brandon H and Adam K) requested the check be made to Adam K. We hand delivered you check made to Adam K for $8000, which was the contracted amount for the project.
At that time my husband and I pointed out some cracks and loose areas - you commented that it was due to the moisture underneath and in a few days the cracks would lessen and the asphalt harden. You were to come back to take care of spreading some piles of dirt left behind.
Brandon and Adam returned on January 22nd, at which time my husband and I reviewed with Brandon the areas that were unsatisfactory. The asphalt was so loose in places that my foot could scrape it off and the dirt underneath could be seen. There were spider cracks in the asphalt in numerous areas. We have pictures and a video with detailed descriptions. Brandon agreed to add an additional 1 1/2" layer of asphalt in the areas delineated which were marked with paint and seal the entire driveway for uniformity. The work would be done the week after.
On Sunday, January 26th, we found the asphalt was buckling up in at least 10 areas with plant life poking though. We called Brandon on Jan. 28th at 10:00 a.m. to set a date for the other repairs and told you of the new issues with the buckling asphalt. Brandon Stated that he would look at it and make necessary repairs when you came out to make the repairs originally discussed.
We discussed with you that we did not f* there should be a need to make repairs after only 10 days of having a brand-new asphalt driveway. The contract states that 2 inches of base and 2 inches of asphalt would be applied. Given the evidence we have stated above, we think that the driveway is not 2 inches thick, and that the quality is below standard.
Our plan was to meet with you January 30th, to discuss a resolution. However, you cancelled the meeting and now plan on coming January 31st to resolve the issues.
We spoke to you on the phone on Thursday January 30th where you agreed that plants should not be coming through the asphalt and that an additional 1" of asphalt will have to be installed over the entire driveway. You told us you were going to come to the house on Saturday February 1st to spray weed killer on all the plants poking through and review if more than one inch would be required in the worse area. You did not call nor come on Saturday.
You came to our home on Monday, February 3rd, and told us that a Hillsborough county task force appeared on one of your current work sites while your employees were working and that now your equipment had been impounded (including your business phones) by them because of a major misunderstanding about licensing, workman's comp and permitting. We walked the entire driveway with you pointing out the numerous (22+) areas now where plants are coming through, the very low areas and where the asphalt is loose and soft (these are the areas discussed previously) (on this day physically pressing on the asphalt caused movement). You agreed that all of these issues require remedy - a 1" coverage over the entire driveway, removing the soft ground and adding base under the low and very soft area and adding 1-1/2" of asphalt on the same along with the entire second arm of the driveway where it is soft and low.
You told us that this Thursday, February 6th, you would have an answer as to when the work was going to be done since that is when you would have an answer about your equipment. Several times on this day you apologized and assured us that you were going to do whatever it takes to make it right and if you could not get your equipment back then you were going to refund some of the money.
Today is February 8th, 2020 and have not heard from Big City Asphalt and all the numbers given to us are disconnected - MIA

Desired Outcome

We believe that the evidence listed above demonstrates that you are in breach of your contract with us to provide 2 inches of base and 2 inches of asphalt for our driveway. We would like the contractor to do what he stated which is to add a 1" asphalt coverage over the entire driveway, removing the soft ground and adding base under the low and very soft area and adding 1-1/2" of asphalt on the same along with the entire second arm of the driveway where it is soft and low. Since we did not hear from them we had another asphalt contractor review and give a quote for this work for approximately $5700.00. This is to make the repairs similar to the agreement. If Big City Asphalt cannot complete the work we will accept monetary compensation in the amount equal to the new contractor's quote which we can provide upon request. We will accept a hand delivered cashier's check only since they now appear to be dishonest.

Big City Asphalt Response • Feb 23, 2020

We have agreed to pay the customer $5,700.00 back and they will hire a new contractor to preform the work.

Big City Asphalt paid the $5700 on February 28th, 2020.

I have a very long driveway and they did a excellent job and completed sooner than I expected.

Faulty asphalt driveway installation. Failure to commence repairs (3X).
On December 12/13, 2018, Big City Asphalt prepared and laid an asphalt drive surface to our home. The team worked well past daylight, using headlamps and cell flashlights on the 12th. On the 13th, the team continued the job. I showed Adam K (MOD) the thinned and stretched asphalt from the previous nights work. He assured me it would be repaired. A propane torch was used to heat and 'repair' several small areas before the job was completed at the end of the day, Dec. 13, 2018. I commented that there were many more large areas of thinned and stretched installation. Adam K stated they would resolve on their own with time and heat from the sun. I tried to settle the bill with a check written to Big City Asphalt, but Adam K requested that I make the check out to him personally. I rewrote the check for $9000.00 to Adam K.

What follows is the email thread between Big City Asphalt and myself:
***January 30, 2019 @ 9:19 AM: Hello Adam,
We have many, many places in our 2 month old driveway where grass is cracking the asphalt and ruining it. The worst areas are where the asphalt does not look like it's the promised thickness. If you remember the guys were working after dark and you said they over-rolled causing stretching and cracks. Please contact me and let me know what you can do to repair the cracks and thin asphalt.
I have written a glowing review for *** that has not published yet.
Thank you,

Mr. H,

I noticed that someone, I assume your crew, sprayed the grassy spots on our new asphalt. There is more to be done, isn't there? My horse was in the fenced area, so you probably couldn't do much. Please get back to me about your plan. I can move the horse.
Thank you,

(Documentation of phone conversation with Brandon H sent to Big City Asphalt, and cc'd to homeowner) Just called and spoke with Brandon H, re: asphalt driveway repair. He assured me that his team will be at our house, Friday the 8th of March at 11:00 am, to begin repairs to cracking and grass growing in asphalt installation.

Sincerely,

***March 8, 2019 @ 1:58 PM:Brandon,

I canceled important plans for this morning because you assured me your company representatives would be here to affect repairs to our asphalt driveway at 11:00 am, Friday 3/08/2019. Since it is 1:50 pm on Friday and you have not contacted me, I am guessing you are not going to come to our house.

My husband and I are very disappointed and irritated that after three assurances that your company would make repairs, no-one has done so. Our next step will be to contact the Revdex.com for assistance in resolving the faulty asphalt installation. We will also remove our positive recommendation from *** and rewrite it in light of poor workmanship and non-response to resolve the issues.

With regret,
Mark & ***

March 8, 2019 @ 1:48 PM (cell documented time): After sending the last email, I attempted to call Mr. H on his listed cell number. I left a message for him about our disappointment with the way they have handled our concerns.

Desired Outcome

We would like our driveway repaired. If Big City Asphalt is not amenable to repairs, we would consider an adjustment in the form of a partial cash refund.

Customer Response • Mar 11, 2019

Big City Asphalt crew showed up today at our home. They repaired the faulty areas of the driveway. Please consider the issue resolved. Thank you.
