Big Dog Movers of Madison Reviews (%countItem)

Big Dog Movers advertises an hourly rate of $120. It was agreed $120/hour is what I would be charged when I contracted with Mike, owner. On the day of the move, after the completion of the move I was given an invoiced for $185/hour. I had no option but to pay it. I contacted the owner, *** by phone and he gave me some explanation about summer rates and winter rates and number of crew members, etc. and could not adjust the amount billed to me. I am owed a refund of the difference between the $185 and $120. This company is using false advertising on their site right how.

We say the same thing to every customer that we speak with over the phone each and everytime. We charge $130/hour for a 2 man crew and $185/hour for a 3 man crew. Those are oursummer rates. Our winter rates were $120 for 2 man and $180 for 3 man. I didn't realize thatthis customer had booked several months prior during the winter. I offered to pay her back thedifference between the winter 3 man price vs summer. She declined and said that we need topay her the difference between our 3 man summer price and our 2 man winter price. Shethought that us bringing 3 men to complete the job more efficiently was ‘“taking advantage ofher” and that we should be ashamed of ourselves. Neither of these are the case. We’re verytransparent and honest people. Her move took a 3 man crew 3.25 hours - 3.25 x $185 =$601.25. If we had a 2 man crew it would have simply taken longer 4.62 hours x $130 =$601.25. It would have taken 2 men about an hour and a half longer to complete her move sothe cost would have been the same whether we sent a 2 man crew or a 3 man. The price perhour was higher only because we provided an extra worker, not for no reason. The mistake wason me charging her our summer rates vs our winter rates of $180 vs $185 not our 2 man winterrate of $120 vs our 3 man summer rate of $185. The customer left a 3 review stating that themovers were very hard working and efficient but that we had changed the price. It was anhonest mistake that I offered to reconcile but the customer was very hostile and accusatoryduring our follow up phone call and wanted to be compensated for the third workers labor notjust the difference in summer and winter rates.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
When I initially spoke with *** before I hired his company he said nothing about summer/winter rates. He quoted $120/hour the same as his web page says $120/hour. he said nothing about # of crew members. In our phone call he did not mention anything about the different rate for number of crew members. It is untrue that it would have taken so much longer with just two men. I have two recliners, a single mattress, metal bed frame as large objects and the rest is small items and boxes. I have moved many times in the Madison area and never have had a 3 man crew. It has never taken more than 2 1/2 hours for a move and then it was driving across the area. I was only offered $5.00 when I complained to *** about the difference in the hourly rate, not the difference. It is untrue I was angry at that point--I was tired and shocked that he would have done this. I am elderly on a fixed income and I had budged for the $120/hour rate. This caused me a financial problem. Other people of means would just shrug it off when the rate is changed. I only became angry when in the next phone call he refused to admit what he had done. I have every right to be angry when I feel I have been taken advantage of. His crew members did work hard and it is not their fault they have a boss that is dishonest about his hourly rate. I was tricked into signing the form. *** gave me the form after we discussed Plans A, B, C. I chose Plan A for the local move and *** said I was signing for Plan A. (I have a witness). I did not know I was signing for the $185/hour rate. This is deceptive. I told this to *** also and his response was, "you signed the form". I was fair in my online reviews. I could have said a lot more but I did not.

Regards

July 9, 2020Revdex.com of WisconsinComplaint Second ResponseBig Dog Movers of MadisonWe are willing to reimburse the customer for our winter vs summer rates because that was ourmistake seeing as they booked far in advance, which is a $10/hour difference. All three of ourguys worked hard so we will not reimburse the cost of the labor for the third man. She was nottricked into signing a form the A, B, and C options are insurance options and she chose the freeinsurance option which does not increase the cost. We had a three man crew because we werevery busy that day and they had more than one move to complete. They all worked hard tocomplete the move efficiently and we charge for each man. We do not take advantage ofpeople, everyone gets charged the same, the move length depends on items as well as if thereare stairs vs elevators or any long walks. Having just two men there would have been a lowerhourly rate but it would have taken them longer to complete the move

I was quoted 185.00 for 1 hour of work. I was then charged 469.00 for 1.5 hours. They explained to me the 189.00 did not include labor or miles, etc. I had less than 1 load to move. I told them 2 movers would be sufficient. He (owner, ***) brought 3. I then called to discuss the charge of 469.00 of which they collected 300.00. I stopped payment on the check I wrote for 169.00 to complete the moving fee. 469.00 dollars for a partial load is outrageous. The owner then began texting me stating that the original moving company warned him that I would "screw him over"and stated "That's what we get for helping someone in need and I was hurting a small business for refusing to pay the full amount" I explained, "You will never justify to me that 469.00 for less than 1 load is appropriate"
The owner, ***, was a bully and completely took advantage of my situation. My original mover left me with 1 small load as they did not account for my inventory being more than was originally thought. They did not have the time or manpower to complete the move that put me in this position. However, their fee was only 333.00 and I sent a letter indicating my frustration and I am hoping that will resolve the matter. Big Dog movers took advantage of someone in need. The 300.00 they received is still much more than what they should have received.

4/10/20Revdex.com of WisconsinComplaint ResponseBig Dog Movers of MadisonThe complaint submitted is completely false and undeserved. I speak with 20-30potential customers every single day and I say the exact same scripted response each andevery time: “We charge $185 per hour, from the time that we leave our base in Fitchburg, untilthe time that we get back, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. That is an all-inclusive price thatcomes with Madison’s highest-rated professional movers. It covers our truck and all associatedtruck costs, and any equipment needed to complete the job. There are no hidden fees or extrafuel charges.” I made the potential costs very transparent and clear to the customer. My former co-worker is the owner of the other company that left her hanging. He saidthey had to leave early because she was not packed and had many more items than she hadlisted, making them late for their next job. She called us in desperation, as she needed to be outof her apartment that day. I did not even charge her a late notice fee, which is typical forcustomers calling at the last minute. When we moved her she had almost nothing packed and we were forced to take multipletrips to and from the truck with loose clothes, decorations, pictures and unpacked dishes.Obviously this takes extra time. The move was from the east side of Madison to the west side ofMadison and our base is on the south side. We had 1.25 hours of travel time and 1.25 hours oflabor, which would have been significantly less had she been prepared.I’m completely shocked that not only did she take the time to file a complaint with theRevdex.com when we helped her out at the last minute, but she still did so aftercanceling her remaining check, which left us without full payment by the amount of $162. Westrive to provide the best experience possible to our clients, and are very disappointed anddisheartened by this interaction.

This is an out right lie. My items were packed. Big Dog told me to file a complaint against *** moving for leaving me with a load. I did not move East to West. I moved from Middleton Wi to Madison. The distance is 5 minutes away. He had less than 1 load. I am an honest person and the fact that he is outright lying to protect his business practices is quite disgusting. The other lie is that he did not receive the check payment of 169.00. I have the copy of the cashed check. Just by word of mouth of his charges and asking associates if that price is appropriate has left anyone I have asked dumbfounded. Then to bash me and not try to come to some type of solution is completely unprofessional. I also have a copy of the invoice and I would be happy to show it to you. My next step is small claims court. 469.00 dollars for less than 1 load is insane and by no means was 2.5 hours in labor. Middleton to University Ave area is 7 minutes at worst.
