December, 2015. After reviewing the documents and verifying coverage we provided the CPAP to the beneficiary. As an accredited, bonded, and licensed DME provider, we are prohibited from stating, "your insurance will pay." We inform the beneficiary that the item(s) in question are "covered" or "not covered" under the individual's plan. Under the beneficiary's insurance plan the items provided were "covered."  Ultimately, insurance companies determine if they will pay or not pay. Unfortunately, insurance companies will find any reason to deny a claim and place the burden for payment on the beneficiary. This is why we are required to specify and have the beneficiary sign a document stating, "I agree to pay all amounts that are not covered by my insurer(s) and for which I'm responsible." SMS goes above this requirement and has the beneficiary sign three separate forms stating the above. The beneficiary's insurance provider denied the claim. As a courtesy, Safeway Medical Supply appealed the claim in question on three separate occasions. Unfortunately, our appeals on the beneficiary's behalf were denied.  In addition to sending statements after the first appeal, Safeway Medical Supply made numerous calls to the beneficiary and mailed a letter asking that they contact us. The beneficiary states that they never received any correspondence from us and did not contact us for this reason. Regrettably, we were left with no alternative other than to send the account to collections. As a business, it makes no sense to avoid attempting to collect an outstanding debt. Without an A/R process, companies would not be able to remain operating. Additionally, sending an account to collections is never desired since the collection agency keeps [redacted] of the collected amount depending on the age of the debt. Today, the client contacted us to discuss this matter. We are happy to report that we have reached an agreement to resolve this matter favorably for both parties.   We sincerely regret that this matter could not have been resolved sooner and with our client directly.
