Mr*** *** called to ask how much we charged to install coilovers on his carI told him we charged $400-$for most carsHe said okay he would get back to us around Friday of that week to scheduleHe then called again to tell us that we would perform the installation himselfI warned him
that installing suspension components on a car is something a professional should do and if he wasn't experienced he should take it somewhere to have them installedHe asked how much I would charge to check to make sure everything was okay when he was doneI told him it should take about a half hour, and around $I also told him my shop labor rate is $an hourThe day he showed up to the shop for me to make sure everything was okay with his installation, he asked if I could also adjust ride height and camber, as well as get his alignment as close as I could without the use of an alignment machineI old him yes, but it would cost more moneyAfter we jacked the car up and and pulled the wheels off, I noticed the coilovers were used and badly damagedI even noticed he used the wrong diameter boltsI told him that was VERY dangerousI then warned him that I would do the best that I could but I also was afraid to try to adjust anything in fear of stripping everything out further and/or ruining themHe told me not to worry about it just do what I couldAfter spending almost hours on just the front end, he warned me he couldn't spend too much money and only brought $So I adjusted his rear camber the best I could, and tried to adjust ride heightI asked him if he used to necessary spanner wrenches provided with the coilover kit, which is used to hand tighten the height adjustment locking ringsHe told me the person he bought the coilovers off of didn't give them to him, so they used a big hammer and screw driverI again warned him that if I tried to adjust height on them that I could damage them beyond repair due to his faulty installationHe told me once again to do my bestAfter all was said and done, I worked on the car for hours, which I explained to him would have been $1,I told him I'd charge him the $cash and then another $on paypal to which he agreedI also have witnesses that heard him state that he was happy with what I did and he did not dispute the $in any way shape or form.After a few days passed, he contacted me and told me that something was clunking in the rear and was very worriedI gave him the address to my house, and took time out of my day to look at his car and go for a ride with him for 100% no chargeI concluded that either the bushings were bad due to the coilovers being used, or when he assembled the top of the rear strut assembly he left the center stud looseI told him the only way I could have checked that was if I disassembled the entire rear assembly when he was in for his appointment but that would have cost even more moneyI told him once again that that was part of a faulty installation that should have been done professionallyHe told me he would take it home and fix it, and then he left.He contacted me again later and asked if I would re align the car and re adjust ride height for free after he disassembled the rear end, tightened those studs, and put it back togetherI told him no I would not, I already charged him a discounted price, warned him to have them done professionally, told him that those studs would not have been left loose if the coilovers were done professionally and I should not have to work on it again for free because he refused to have serious work done by a professional, neglected to use the right bolts and double check his own work, and then show up for a visual inspection appointment and want extra work done without warningThe work he wanted done was performed professionally, he was charged a very discounted rate, and said several times before leaving that he was happy with the work that was performed
