I did not place the blame for the valve gasket oil leak on the gasketI told the customer that I can not know what caused the leak until we or another shop removes the gasket and examines itIt is certainly possible that the leak was caused by a low quality gasket, or a defect in one of the surfaces that the gasket is supposed to sealI also told him that if we determine the the leak was caused by our failure to install the gasket properly then I would cover it under our warrantyThe customer declined to allow us to examine the gasket, unless I could guarantee him in advance that it would be covered under our warranty, no matter the causeThe customer has not presented me with any evidence that the leak was caused by our negligence, just his assertion that there could be no other cause because the gasket was "brand new in a package." The customer is not consistent in his claim that he purchased the *** engine due to the warranty rather than the lower priceIn his original complaint he does not mention the warranty, only the lower priceWhen we notified *** that the first engine which the customer purchased was defective, they said they would send an inspector to verify that the engine was defectiveIt took two weeks for the inspector to show upThis inspector agreed with us that the engine was defective and *** sent a replacement engine under their warrantyHowever, they later refused to pay any labor for the second engine, citing "debris" in the engine which they claim to have found during tear downThey supported this claim with photos that show only microscopic or superficial blemishes that did not cause the failureA Google search of "*** engine reviews" reveals that this is a common tactic of theirsBut the question remains: If they really thought we were responsible for the engine failure or had any real evidence of our negligence would they have sent the replacement engine?

I certainly can understand the frustration of having to replace an engine in a relatively low mileage car, whether it was caused by a lack of maintenance or a defect in the original manufacture. Since this is a rare occurrence for most of us it can be daunting to make the decision as to which shop...

to use and how to evaluate the prices charged. The costs for engine rebuilding and replacement have steadily risen and they are now much higher than when our parents or other family members had to do this many years ago. I know this is why you decided to go with the low priced engine you found on the internet, and I am sorry that we may not have impressed upon you enough the potential pitfalls of such a purchase. The fact that the first engine you purchased was defective, and your having to pay us to install another engine must have increased the frustration even more. This is why we avoid the low priced internet engines and transmissions, and stick with the suppliers that we have found to have a good track record over our nineteen years in business. This allows us to offer a two year, twenty-four thousand mile warranty on the engines and other parts we source and sell ourselves. Yes, this is more expensive, but I really think it is a better value and more economical in the long run. Please call me any time to discuss this further at ###-###-####.Tom H[redacted], owner, Automotive Resources

Complaint: [redacted]
I am rejecting this response because:Tom H[redacted], the owner of Automotive Resources (AR), completely avoids addressing the problem of the valve gasket oil leak.  He wants to place the blame or fault on the gasket (which was brand new in a package which they opened).  He does not take responsibility for their mechanic not doing the job properly.  Instead he wants to imply that we are to blame basically because we purchased an inferior engine from the Internet.  [redacted] is a well-known company that sells thousands of engines every year.  The reason we bought that engine was because it had a 3 year warranty on it, which was a better warranty than the 2 year AR gave with theirs.  Make no mistake, the engine we purchased was not low priced as Tom H[redacted] implies.  We paid a substantial amount for it.  The fact that he feels the need to lecture us that the prices of engines have gone up, that our car’s engine failed at a low mileage, that there were pitfalls with our decision have nothing to do with the fact that AR did NOT impress upon us even once that they did not stand behind their work.  When we spoke about having AR install an engine of our choice, they gladly and willingly took the job but without stating that they did NOT cover their work if we didn’t use their parts or engine!  In fact Anthony V[redacted], their customer service representative, told us to make sure that [redacted] sent the gaskets for the engine.  He claimed that sometimes they do not send the gaskets.  This would have been the time to tell us that if we purchased these parts from another company other than AR, the labor installing them would not be warranted!!!  That is a breach in ethics in not telling customers that they do not cover their work.  If we had known that, we would have gone elsewhere or purchased the engine from them.  It would have saved us a great deal frustration and cost!  A reputable company will tell its customers and be upfront about such important matters.  Automotive Resources failed to do this. After paying AR labor for installation of the second engine, it would behoove AR to make sure the job was done right.  After all we had already paid AR $2400 for labor of the first engine.  It is pathetic that a company with a supposed good reputation will not stand behind their work and blame the problem on a gasket.  To take no responsibility for their work is incomprehensible!  One way or another we will make this company pay for their unethical practices. There is also still the issue that they were at fault with the installation of the first engine due to debris they might have introduced while installing the engine.  Anthony V[redacted], AR’s customer service representative, admitted that his mechanic probably did introduce the debris during the installation of the first engine, but since it wasn’t their engine, and because AR didn’t think the debris was significant enough to cause the failure, they couldn’t warrantee their own mistake!  Instead he just let the job sit there for 2 weeks without letting us know what he planned on doing about it.   There was a sore lack of communication on his part.  He didn’t even send the first (defective) engine back to [redacted] when he was supposed to.  Needless to say, it was an arduous process getting another engine from [redacted].  When [redacted] did get the engine back, they found out that AR had introduced debris into the engine during installation and that was the cause of the failure.   [redacted] sent us documentation and pictures of the debris that was in the engine when it was returned and inspected by them.  It appears that mechanics that work for AR are either careless or incompetent!  Either way we will follow through to make sure that we are compensated for the senseless, unnecessary labor fees of the first engine debacle, which was $2400.  AR needs to take responsibility for their lack of honesty and incompetence!

[redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:If you want a good job, at a reasonable price, in a reasonable period of time, and with a real warranty look elsewhere.  If you want eloquent excuses, this is the place.
