We had agreed on the job and the price, I paid fully for the whole job. After 10 months job was less than 25% complete still. He refused a refund.
My car was in the shop for 10 months to change my motor out. (dropped off April 6th 2019) After fully paying and agreeing with him on the amount needed upfront. After 10 months all he had accomplished was taking my motor out and selling it (we agreed to sell it for $1200 and use money for labor & parts) and changing out my k-memeber. A total of $4200 was gave for labor with the $1200 from the motor and transmission. When I told him I needed to see progress or some of my money for labor back until more progress was made he told me to come get it like it was. When we went to discuss how much money I was owed back he tried to tell me that he used all the labor money and I still owed him some even though he agreed everything was covered already previously. And to top it off the receipt he gave me for the work that was done stated that he took out the old and installed the new motor and transmission even though when I picked it up the the motor and transmission was placed in the bed of my truck and nothing in the car... Oh and he "misplaced" my brand new battery bought February 2019 (have reciept) and tried to give me one from 2014 that was 6 years old but he did say he would replace it after I called him out on it.. When I picked up the car it was February 24th 2020 (10 months and 2 weeks later) with no motor and transmission installed. He tried to justify spending the money by saying he installed and removed the motor multiple time and he was only counting doing so once to help out even though there is nothing installed in the car when I got it. I have a receipt he gave me for $600 I gave to him to relocate my battery which was not completed either and he refused to return that money as well.

Desired Outcome

I believe I should get half of the money I gave him for labor for installing the motor and transmission back because he is trying to charge me for fully installing the new motor and transmission in the car and it's never been done.

Took my G Wagon to Blake for a restoration. Agreed on price and things that needed to be done. Provided all parts and expected to get the truck back in better shape than went I left it. Was told by Blake at the beginning that he gets projects like this all the time where someone said they could do a job and not follow through. I trusted him and agreed to his price. Went to pick truck up and parts were missing and installation was very poor. Was very disheartening. Attempted to talk to Blake about my dissatisfaction and he began to argue with me about radio choice and job he agreed to do, didn't even complete all work because he got upset about some misplaced parts he though I accused him of misplacing. Which wouldn't have been in question or issue if he would have sent me the parts list he said he would at the start of the project. After having a long discussion about his poor work he discounted the total price a bit but I still had to pay him too much for horrible quality of work. I had to fix some of his mistakes myself. I would not recommend this shop for anything. This project was obviously too complex and required a skill level that he and his staff doesn't have.
Not professional
Poor communication
Lack of knowledge
Cant trust
Product_Or_Service: car restoration

Desired Outcome

Refund paid too much for poor work. would like refund for work performed.

Blake's Automotive Service Response • Aug 30, 2019

Mr*** brought the vehicle by the shop and I did a visual inspection. I then gave him an estimate and he brought the vehicle for repair. Upon working on the vehicle I found that cover up repairs had been made to hide the extent of the rust/rot. I called Mr. and told him that with the extent of repairs needed it was out of my scope and he would be better suited going to a body shop. The items and services we did provide Mr. were compromised in quality because he provided us with cheap and used parts. I explained that the cheap parts would not perform up to his expectation but he insisted on using them. He kept saying he did not want a show vehicle. He also had a complaint about other installations on the vehicle and I further explained that the rust and rot throughout the wagon caused fasteners not to attach properly. I explained that if we were to fix all the imperfections he would be way over budget and he did not ask for a complete restoration. Nor did he have the budget for so as he described to me in the beginning.I have over 300 text messages between us and hrs of phone conversation. There was no lack of communication. I stopped doing more work on the G Wagon and made the bill for what had been completed. This was after I felt like I had a customer who had champagne taste on a beer budget. He wanted all the bells and whistles added to the vehicle but was wanting to pay bottom dollar. With experience like this in the past it never turns out well. My shop cannot provide the best service to someone who is not willing to pay for such service. I gave him a discount to try and settle this when he came to pick it up. I have a no refund policy because I try to fix whatever problem the customer has to their satisfaction. I have this policy in place so customers who just don't want to pay can't back out on service they approve.I clearly conveyed to Mr. that for the budget he had this was not going to be a show vehicle but we would do the best we could. If we have any questions please don't hesitate to call 704-600-5384 for further information regarding this matter.

Customer Response • Aug 30, 2019

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
First of I didn't haggle his price he gave me. I also told him it wasnt about the money however I wasny trying to ge a show truck but I was expecting a quality working truck. It never was a problem with the new and used parts unti I asked about some new speakers that was misplaced. He got offered and didnt complete all that he said he would complete. He even stated that. If I would have gotten a part inventor like he stated he would send me there wouldn't have even been a problem about that. Also he advertises his establishment as a custom shop. From my understanding most old vehicles that are going through any type of restoration some parts have to be used because the parts are not made anymore. We as a person that does this kind of work for a living I would assume that would be common knowledge. We discussed this in these "300" messages and correspondence. However, out of these "300" text messages its very clear that the communication was no what he stated at the beginning and was unacceptable. There was questions I would ask with no response and if he did respond it was very limited. His statement about like he said he did say hes seen this before and people come to his shop to fix what others have not been able to complete. This was the same day I dropped it off and paid the percentage he requested. Again not negotiating his price that he obviously couldn't deliver on. The work he performed on my new and used parts wasnt done with quality. The day I picked it up he and his shop manager had to put parts on the truck that wasnt used or new. It was parts that they took off and never put back on. I had to wait for them to finish the job. He gave me a small refund not because he wanted to, it was because I asked him if this was his truck would he be satisfied and he shook his head no. He knew the job was poor, he made excuses about one of his staff members that was woon the truck that he fired. The comment about champagne tastes is ridiculous and uncalled for. I brought a 30+ year old Mercedes that I purchased to restore and paid the price he quoted. So my budget was determined by his cheap beer eye. I'm not trying to be difficult or disrespectful. I'm trying to be fair. He did a poor job and that seems to be admitted because he stated he dont give refunds but he knew the job was unacceptable.
