The actual roof was done satisfactory. However, I called months after job was done and the owner was horrible to me. He was condescending and just down right rude. When I asked why it was going to cost me $150.00 to just see if it was a roof issue he got very defensive and actually hung up on me. He then had someone else call to try to smooth things over and apologize. He said there is a reason that the owner doesn't usually handle customer concerns (because he is rude). Would never do business with such an unprofessional, mean business owner again. He obviously doesn't appreciate the customer after the sale is done.

Review: We had our roof and gutters replaced 2 years ago by Blue Hills Roofing. [redacted] gave his sales pitch, and continually stressed how they went above and beyond what other roofers did, exceeded the code requirements, etc. It all sounded great. And admittedly, the service was fast, and the roof looks great.

The whole reason we replaced the gutters was due to them coming off the house in the back corner due to loose/warped fascia board. Two years later, its coming off in the same place. I climbed up the ladder to take a look, and found that when the gutters were installed, they screwed about six 3 inch long screws through the gutters into the fascia board to attempt to tighten it to the house. These extra long screws weren't used anywhere else in the gutters, so that must be why they were used. It worked at first, but was just a temporary fix and obviously not done right, as it's coming off again two years later.

I called and got the receptionist, and explained the situation. I asked that [redacted] come out and take a look (the reason I requested [redacted] was because I know employees can take short cuts, especially if it's Friday or Saturday, which it was, and they want to be done with work. I figured [redacted] would have more interest in doing things right, like he told us during the estimate).

She sent someone else out. Then never sent a quote. I waited a week and a half and called back. I said whatever the quote was, I wasn't going to be happy, because I felt it was poor workmanship and wasn't done right the first time. She said [redacted] would take a look.

[redacted] called me back and was extremely rude and sounded mad I was even suggesting they fix this. He said that his technicians looked at it, and he looked at it (although I'm not sure when, since I was home all weekend and never saw him) and it wasn't their problem because it was the fascia board, which wasn't in the contract to be fixed. When I said "I assumed it would have been fixed properly, or at least brought to my attention that it would require extra work/cost to fix properly", he told me that "in his business, assume is a dirty word and I shouldn't assume anything. Three sentences later, he said he "assumed his employees did what they could to try to fix it".

He was very terse, and even complained that "it was really hard to talk when it was so noisy". I explained to him I had to step outside at work so I didn't have to interrupt my coworkers.

I asked why the extra long screws were used in this part only, explaining that the worker must have known that there was an issue with the fascia board, or they wouldn't have done it. He tried to tell me "I sit behind a desk and run a business", implying that he couldn't be there to know why.

Then he tried to explain that my real problem was that the attic needs to be reinsulated, and that even if they had replaced the fascia board, it probably would have happened again until I get reinsulated. He would do that and fix the gutter and fascia board for $5,200.

In the end, he said it would be $640 to replace the fascia board, because they now had to take the whole gutter off, replace it, and put it back. I feel that if they had been able to do it at the time they replaced the gutter, it would have been a small fraction of that, since the gutter was already off.

Bottom line is I don't know how to replace a roof, gutters, or fascia board. That's why I hired someone. If they had told me "hey, we found a problem and need to do more work to fix it", I would have approved it and paid for it. Who wouldn't? It was over $8,000 for the roof and gutters. Of course I'd want to pay a little extra to have it done right. Instead, they screwed in a couple extra screws so they could leave early and start their weekend (yes, the work was done on a Friday and Saturday).

If [redacted] had been willing to work with me and discount the labor, I'd have gladly paid for materials. But he was so rude and condescending that I'd rather pay more money to some other company than give him another dime. I heard he contracts out the gutter work anyways, so there is probably nothing he can do to discount the labor.

I feel bad for the other two couples I've referred to Blue Hills Roofing. I hope they never have to deal with [redacted] for any issue.Desired Settlement: I just want my gutters and fascia board fixed properly, like it should have been the first time. I'd be willing to pay for materials for the fascia board. Labor for removing and replacing gutters should not be charged, since the work should have been done during gutter replacement.

Response 1: Yes, we did install this client’s roof on August 2, 2013 and were very happy and appreciative to do so. We replaced the roof, did a minor repair to the fascia board and hung new seamless gutters. The installation was done as I had promised, above and beyond. Unfortunately, the client does not understand that the fascia board is not the root of his problem. I have tried to the best of my ability to explain to him what the real issue is. The client has an older home which has not been insulated in the entire time he has resided there. He admitted to having had ice buildup on the edge of the roof and in the gutters. Gutters do not pull fascia boards out of roof truss tails on their own. This occurs when the gutters and/or truss tails endure extreme weight due to ice buildup (ice dams). Screws hold very tightly and will not pull out unless there are extenuating circumstances. The lack of insulation and buildup of ice are both issues that are out of mine and my company’s control. I explained this in depth to our client, as well as how those issues could be remedied. If the fascia were to be fixed without insulating, the ice will continue to build up and once again pull the fascia board out of the truss tails. I informed him how properly insulating his attic would keep the ice from building up and save him 30%-50% off of his yearly energy bill. I also told him about a government program I participate in that could give him $2,500.00 towards the project. This would save him 48% off the cost with a 30%-50% yearly energy savings. This upgrade would pay for itself in 2-3 years after which he would be saving money. I also explained that we would properly fix the truss tails which the fascia board adheres to. We would love to fix every client’s issues free of charge and do, if there is an issue with our workmanship or product. In this particular instance, there was not an issue with the workmanship or the product. I did all that I could to educate our client about the real issue he was faced with. It is clear my efforts were in vain and the client had his mind made up prior to speaking with anyone from our company. I would like to further address issues the client noted in his review. I did look at the problem he described, accompanied by my supervisor of ten years, (who had done the physical work on this project). We do not work weekends like many companies so that is why the client would not have seen me over the holiday weekend. When I called the client, I did make a comment in regard to the background noise. It was very hard to hear him and I wanted to have an effective and meaningful conversation with him. My intention was not to sound arrogant or condescending. The client admittedly repeated that he knew nothing about construction. I tried my best to educate him about the root of his issue as well as the almost 50% of the cost I could get covered for him, with financial payback in the future. I sincerely believe that anything less than fixing a problem which we were not liable for free of charge would be the only way to make this client happy. I am truly sorry that this client feels the way he does and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Review: My roof was completely redone in June of 2011. Early March 2014 I noticed water leaking into our house from the roof through the wall. When I investigated further I found it was leaking at a location above our kitchen and coming down our wall in the house and saturating the drywall. I now have towels and a pillow to soak up the water. I went on the roof to see where it was coming from. I found the leak and am pretty confident it is because of improper install of that specific location. With the weather getting warmer its just going to get worse as the snow melts. I shoveled some snow off my roof to help but its still coming in.Desired Settlement: I would like the part of the roof fixed so the leak does not happen again. Its not a big area and may be a quick fix. However. The damage to the wall/floor and cabinets may be a bigger problem. I would like those items repaired/replaced as well. Everyday it gets worse and the water damage is growing.
